Flights to LAX in June/July

Planning a family trip to LA in June/July.

I understand this is during peak, but I have family there and that’s their holiday period. Flights right now are quite expensive, but just wondering is this as best as it will get? Does it get cheaper as it gets closer or more expensive? Worth to wait for a ‘sale’ or none will exist?

Airline pricing is dynamic in that it'll be adjusted over time to get the airline to the load it wants at the point of the sale cycle. As a general rule though, the closer it gets to departure, the higher the prices people are willing to pay (and are therefore charged). There's always the possibility of a sale, but they'll often have blackout dates on school holiday periods.

If you want to save a few bucks, Fiji Airways can be good value, albeit with a stop in Nadi.

You've probably missed the $1100-1200 sale flights.(although never say never, if you roll the dice you may end up paying much more if it never happens)
Qantas have some for 1600ish atm.

Not sure how it would be pricing wise, but when I was younger and went on a family holiday. We flew in via Hawaii and then got domestic from there. It does mean a bit of stuffing around, but could save you a bit especially for a few family members.

    • Exactly what I was thinking, particularly if Jetstar has one of their specials to Hawaii.

      • Thats if the flight isn't cancelled… (going off personal experience with junkstart domestic) not that they are famous for it.

        • We didn’t get cancelled but we did take off 6 hours late. They also had to fly us back Qantas rather than Jetstar. “But apart from that yer Honour”. Allow a couple of days in Hawaii.

This doesn't answer your question, but I assume you are considering Economy, how old are the kids?
I recently had a friend travel over with Air NZ (meaning a stop in Auckland) and they purchased a 'skycouch' which is an entire row of 3 seats reserved for you and the seats have a leg rest that fold upwards and convert to a bed. Flying with 2 toddlers this was apparently a lifesaver because the kids could get a lie flat sleep and have some 'personal' space while on the otherwise gruelling 13-hour journey.
Obviously there is an additional charge to reserve this, so you'll need to do some research.

    Wait for the fire sale.

  • Does it get cheaper as it gets closer or more expensive?

In this climate, with more people travelling OS, usually, more expensive…

family trip to USA especially when our aussie dollar is at a near all time low? You must be well off :)

Not to mention the inflation in the US.

Last time I was there, it was near parity and was fantastic. It's pricey now.

As a rule of thumb, if the menu says $15 for a pizza, it will be more than double in AUD ($30) by the time you take into account taxes, tips and forex.

One good thing is that meal servings are large.

No wonder everyone is going to Japan.

Yea I understand. I have family coming from across the world to meet up in LA at the same time. Never have we ever done that. So almost once in a lifetime lol.
