Keep in mind that FPV flying outdoors in Australia requires approval from CASA…

    • +2

Even if it’s sub250 toy? Surely not!!

      • +5

Sadly, yes even if it's under 250grams, per https://www.casa.gov.au/drones/drone-rules/flying-first-pers…
Technically for FPV your legal options are:
        1. fly indoors,
        2. apply for permission for an outdoor flight (which costs a not-insignificant administration fee for each flight you want approved)
        3. flying at an approved field as part of the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA).

Plenty of people have a "just send it" attitude with regards to drones but that's how we got such heavy-handed regulations in the first place.

        • +11

Are you sure about that? It has nothing to do with already a nanny nation approach to everything?

        • +2

Dunno if anyone would know this:

How do the authorities differentiate between FPV vs handheld RC transmission?
Is it that easily detectable? (other than visually identifying a guy with goggles and one handed controller)

          • +4

@Yebro: The high level explanation is: DJI and several other drone detection companies know everything about your drone. More data than you could imagine is transmitted every time you turn it on including historic data, flight logs, wifi networks, info on the phones you’ve hot-spotted off, everywhere you’ve turned it on, even the content you’ve captured, etc.
Basically, if CASA decides to truly get heavy handed one day, the evidence is all there.

They know exactly what drone you’re flying and how you’re flying it. Even home-made ‘dumb’ FPV drones transmit more data than people realise!

            • @Buz1986: So if that’s the reason why does the regulation only apply to FPV drones? Are you arguing they somehow capture more data?

Surely it’s because of the ‘line of sight’ ruling?

            • @Buz1986: Not true for home made drones. A lot of agencies are having issues with those drones. I’m not just talking in Australia either.

          • @Yebro: They don't differentiate. Radio transmissions aren't the issue.
If you give your goggles to a buddy next to you while you fly looking at the drone in line of sight, then you're technically in the clear.

The laws prohibit flying without being able to see your drone in your line of sight; there's nothing illegal about owning an FPV drone.

We keep getting more and more controlled in every aspect of life simply because very few stand up for freedom. Its taken away bit by bit to prevent a revolt, as per the frog in the pot allegory.

          • @skysurfer: We get these controls, because people are (profanity) idiots that fly them into helimed choppers and such.

        • akkakmdm is correct. Rules regarding drones are not new, just there are more restrictions over the years which is the reason why I have been reluctant to upgrade my old DJI Phantom 3 drone for so long and definitely won't be wasting my money on a FPV drone. People have been fined in the past so don't think you can get away when flying illegally.

    • Interesting, has anyone ever been nabbed flying casually? I hear that people dob in competitors in the professional space but you see all these people flying drones illegally and posting on Facebook flying directly over people on beaches and stuff and even selling photos.

      • Seen people flying inside national parks where it's completely illegal to fly drones from what I read. Literally like every other regulation in Australia, there is too much on paper and too little that gets enforced.

        • Yeah in the end people have no idea flying crazy and people who actually probably know how to be careful are not able to fly anywhere

        • flying inside national parks where it's completely illegal to fly drones from what I read

No restrictions on flying drones in national parks from CASA.

You can use any of CASA's verified apps to see exactly where you can and can't fly.

      • Never know of anyone getting pinged for just normal flying. It when you do some really illegal, then they will get you on everything illegal.

Yet flying huge drones over American air bases… Nothing to see here 😅

  • +1

Great price… it is really fun flying in FPV….

  • Can you use the google with Mavic Pro 2?

    • I just google it and it says no

  • +5

I don't see the reason for buying these due to the regulation. I like the idea of having a drone, I like technology but technology you can actually use.

    • +2

You don’t have to follow every rule ever made, especially ones that don’t make any sense.

      Just be sensible and careful.

      • That's a fair reply. I guess my perspective is why buy something intending to break the law? Seems like more hassle than it's worth. But you're certainly right, many rules are stupid.

  • isnt the regular price 839 so its more like 80 off instead of 500?

  • Genuine question, I don't understand why would anyone buy the Neo (apart from cost) compared to Mini 3/4?

FPV is a different experience but is it relevant when flying and taking vids, pics with a drone?

I'm just trying to understand the applications and use cases (e.g. real estate aerial? But can do it with a Mini 3/4)

    • +1

The Neo was originally released to compete with/ take market share from HoverAir. It was cheap and easy to use. Straight away it took the market share in the cheap drone space, but the demand for controllers and goggles pushed the price up to be in line with the Mavic Mini 3 Pro. I don’t see many people buying the higher combo, so maybe that’s why they are dropping their pants on them.

    • I bought the mini as a fun gift for kids for Xmas (and me). From watching videos online the selling point (aside from low price) was that it seems fairly indestructible.

If we use it enough then I’ll upgrade at some point in the future.

      • You are talking about the Neo when you say indestructible? Or both? I watched the video earlier of dude flying a Neo into trees and walls 😂

        • Ahh. Yes. I meant Neo. Yeah. That’s the video. 😂 it just bounces. Seen another someone dropping it from massive height.

Feel ok with my kids crashing it. Wouldn’t with a more expensive price of kit.

  • anyone get motion sickness from these?

    • I have the good old V1 Goggles that work with the Mavic Pro (original). I find that sitting down negates all motion sickness for me.

      Some people do.
