[NSW, VIC, QLD] $0 First Year Membership Fee for GoStarter Plan (Renews at $49 Per Year) @ GoGet Carshare

710
49OFF

One year free membership trial on the GoStarter plan using the promo code 49OFF (save $49*) by the 31st of January 2025. Cancel anytime.

I use GoGet on the GoOccasional plan and love it (I don't own a car - have a motorbike instead) (not the GoStarter, although I could probably drop down to the Occasional one given my usage). Good opportunity to test the service for free to see if you like it. Cars everywhere in the inner parts of the big cities.

NOTE: GoGet Carshare currently only operates in Sydney, Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Melbourne and Brisbane.

  • Have to put in credit card # and REMEMBER to cancel ?

    • Can you just use a prepaid card?

      • +1

Zip's disposable cards might do the trick.

Just be aware that making it difficult for a vendor to take your money doesn't mean you're no longer under contract.

I made this mistake and ended up having to fight with a debt collector. (I got out of it but YMMV and I will never use this technique again.)

        • Gee what arseholes. What company?

          • @cheaponos: I can't remember - it was a long time ago. It was an international subscription to something online. They put a lot of effort into finding my address (wasn't quite right but close enough that I got thier letter). I think chasing people who didn't want thier service was thier main source of income, so I reckon your description is accurate.

But the point is any of them could do it, if it's a subscription rather than prepaid pay-as-you-go. edit: I know that makes no sense, but I'm sure you know what I tried to say.

Half the appointments in my personal calendar are reminders to cancel stuff and I am more loyal to it than my own family…. ;)

      • Can't you just subscribe and then immediately cancel. Most of the time you keep your benefits until expiry

        • +2

Good point, I guess fear of losing access is the reason I've been using in my mind but maybe it's an irrational fear…?

          • +3

@murenei: I have yet to encounter a subscription where I canceled and they revoked access early.

            • +2

@xNik: Apple does it for Music and Apple TV, which is why I've never resubscribed to either. Greedy Greedy Tim Apple!

              • @YetAnotherChris: Damn, didn't know that. I know I always do this with Amazon. Every couple of months you get the free prime trial. I do it and cancel right away.

            • @xNik: Classpass

    • +11

Use PayPal. And you can cancel straight away and still get the 1 year

      • Wouldn't this also prevent it from charging rental fees?

      • +2

With all the shady practices of PayPal and it's ownership of Honey, not sure I could ever trust PayPal any longer to do the right thing

    • Revolut disposable virtual card.

      • Doesn't remove the need to cancel subscription

  • Can you rent the car for like 5 days straight or you have to return to exact spot every end of day?

    • +6

Yep, you can make multi-day bookings. I haven't done it myself but I make a couple of full-day bookings a year for day-trips out of Sydney. 150km free so you can get to Royal National Park or Blue Mountains or Central Coast in it.

    • +2

Yes, but for long bookings it ends up being pretty expensive, probably more than a traditional car rental agency.

      • +3

It’s not bad when you consider it includes fuel usage, if you’re on a long trip.

Although they’ve gotten pretty miserly with the km, it was better when it was 150 and you could book an hour into an extra day to get another 150 (ie book for 25 hours, get 300km)

  • +2

    Has anyone tried this?

    Anyone could share the experience?
    Thanks

    • +6

I personally love it but I am their target customer:
      - live within 10km of cbd Sydney (medium density)
      - don't have a family
      - ride a motorbike as well which lowers need for a car but supplements access to rental car well

Found popcar to be far more user-friendly as you don't need a keycard (unlocking/locking controlled through app). They also regularly run deals for their highest tier which is permanently free if you sign up during the promotional period and won't renew like GoGet. Only downside of Popcar is that the customer support is WOEFUL.

      • I also signed up for Popcar on a free tier once upon a time (thanks OzBargain!), I just wish they had cars in more locations. Or I guess, closer to where I live! I've only got GoGets and Flexicars within walking distance, alas.

        The app unlocking is great.

    • I have used both flexicar and goget in the past. I live in inner city Melbourne so there are plenty of cars around and all sorts. Pretty easy to get a booking.

    • +5

Haven't tried Popcar or Flexicar as GoGet was generally working for me and seems like far more vehicles around (haven't checked actual data on this tho). I actually end up using the customer support quite frequently - partly because I keep losing my card but also partly because of vehicle location issues or issues returning the car on time. So I would be inclined to value the cust support quite highly and GoGet's is excellent.

    • I've used GoGet for the last year and been happy with it. The cars have all been clean, well maintained and nice to drive. I am their ideal consumer though, I live close to a train station and walking distance from a supermarket so I barely need to drive. I mostly use it when I want to visit my parents since getting there via PT takes twice as long as driving.

    • +1

Popcar are the cheapest of them all, but you need to live in an area with popcar nearby. There are many more Goget locations than popcar.

I’ve had only a few issues with popcar (due yo shithead car sharers in my area). They used to be great for hiring vans to help people move etc… but alas i’m pretty sure people are using the vans for weekend business - all the vans within a 10km radius of me are booked from Friday to Monday months in advance.

    • Great service if you just need a car infrequently and live near GoGet pods.

I had a flat battery and they organised roadside assist promptly.

They didn't charge me any extra.

Found it tricky to find my car once when I chose a pod that was quite hidden in a multilevel car park. Added 15-20 mins to the journey vs jumping in a car in your own garage.

      • Some of the cars can be a bit grotty or unkempt but so can my own (when I own and maintain one).

Is there a way to apply this code for existing members? Or is this deal for new members only?

  • +1

How is this any different to Turo or Uber Carshare, which seem cheaper and don’t have a membership requirement?

    • +3

For starters, Uber Carshare isn't a thing anymore (as of September).

As for Turo, I don't know much about it but from a quick look, the main difference is that GoGet (and other similar car shares) is more flexible and seems to have more cars in more locations, and it owns its own fleet.

    • +2

      Fewer Cybertrucks than Turo?

    • +2

Can't speak for Turo, never used it, but Uber are a horrible company to deal with. Great when it works but they'll screw you over when it doesn't.
I've used GoGet and Flexicar car and both have Aussie phone numbers you can call and speak to humans for help. I've had a couple of issues with Uber and each time it was a case of dealing with an helpful bot on the chat who made everything harder.

  • +3

There is Rent A Bomb. Their cars/ute/van/suv etc are really cheap.

    • +2

I am scared to google that without VPN turned on.

  • +4

The van hire is pretty good. Easier than dealing with the counter at bunnings etc.

  • +5

I've used Goget, Flexicar and Popcar and Goget is by far the most expensive of them all. Not only do you pay by the hour, you also need to pay for KMs driven and bookable times are only in 30 minute increments. Flexicar is unlimited KM and Popcar is ridiculously cheap - to be honest I don't know how their prices are so low.

Edit: also Goget you need the silly physical card/token whereas the other two are fully digital and use a phone app.

popcar reviews are not great, also their insurance is a scam . base excess is 4000 to 5000 , you are charged a ton of fees if anything goes wrong.
Not saying others are better but you must always add the insurance part and odd fees into account.

Goget makes sense if you manage to get a business plan (cheaper prices, cheaper extra insurance and no subscription)
Edit: Goget & flexi insurance is also dodgy but the fees for me are reasonable. I compared hiring a van for 1 day and popcar came out cheaper by around $10 while ignoring the weird fees so I guess if you have one near where you live it makes sense

      • You can get car hire excess insurance that covers popcar, goget etc. need to ensure the insurance policy includes “car club”.

We never had any insurance issues with popcar. My wife had an at fault scrape, they didn’t follow up. She had a not at fault incident, no issue and no cost. There insurance took care of everything.

How can I temporarily block the odometer of their Hiace van ?

    • Do you block your uber's odo when you are drunk or sober?

    • Close your eyes.

  • They moved on from their own cars to carnextdoor business model. Or they bought ubercar share business?

  • Do any car share companies operate in Hobart?

    • +1

There's one location for Kinto at the Co-Op Toyota in Argyle St.

  • Do they do credit checks?

    • Shouldn't do, just a driver's licence check for obvious reasons. I haven't signed up with GoGet specifically, but usually all they need is a payment method on file.

  • Is this for new members only?

  • +3

Sign up for a free ABN if you don't have one already and get the GoGet Business plan instead.
Cheaper rates and no annual fee.

  • Is there like a legacy free plan? I've never had to pay for a membership and it looks like my default is Go Starter.

  • is this cheaper than uber carshare?

    • That’s Deceased

    • Hourly rate might be cheaper if you’re on a paid plan?

  • I’ve been using goget for years and absolutely love it. A pity the other capital cities haven’t been sustainable for them to get going. A great deal if you are in a location where they are. I use them when travelling interstate too. And I regularly book a van to help move things for friends and family
