How long do I have to activate?

    • That was going to be my question too..

    • For the cashback iirc it was 30days from purchase.

to activate the sim card mine was valid till jun 2025.

      activate took a few minutes.

went in to an optus shop to convert to an esim which took about 15 minutes including wait time.

the ID check for some reason would read my passport.

      • +1

Easy to check the special terms.

There is no mention of needing to activate in order to get cashback.

      • Any idea if you get the Cashback if you switch to eSIM after CR is tracked successfully.

I lost my physical sim now thinking to go get an eSIM from Optus store but wondering if that would void my tracked CR which says approval in 120 days
And it's been 30 days exactly since it tracked

    • I bought one of these from the November deal and I am just now activating the sim, and the 280GB deal is there - maybe because they have reactivated the deal.

  • +13

CR's tracking is so hit & miss these days. it's a pretty big maybe.

    • +2

So its a gamble and NO guarantee you will get it …

    • happened to me on last optus deal… the CR's CSR is looking into it…
      soo we'll see if it's +100 or -100 in 6 months time

    • I got a cash back tracked mail from them now for this. Hopefully will get the cash back. Thanks OP

      • excellent to hear!

    • +2

I had to follow up with CR for a $2 cash back, only then did they honour it, so am not risking it for a possible $95.

  • +8

The telco prices are out of control now .

    • +3

These yearly sim prices are getting ridiculous. Just need our ISPs to start offering sims so we can make the switch

    • Yeh agreed
Been using 12m prepaid sims for a few years now and Telstra/boost but prices are ridiculous now, and also removed a mid tier option (eg $170 for 12m)

  • This or wait for Boost?

    • +4

I moved to boost just for oversea wifi calling, I plan to stay more than 2 months overseas every year

      • So Boost mobile supports Voice over Wifi and Optus doesn't?

        • +1

Boost/Telstra support Voice over WiFi overseas, while Optus don't. Optus only allow you to use VoWiFi while in Australia.

          • @asingha: Do other Telstra reseller e.g. more offer the same?

            • +1

@Meovel: ALDImobile allows you to, so I assume all other Tesltra resellers would do the same.

more allows you as well. Expand the 'mobile' section and scroll until you see "Can I make Wi-Fi calls from overseas?"

    • +9

I wouldn't wait for boost I'm with them and the network has gone to crap my wife gets better reception with optus everywhere mine doesn't I can't wait to switch we are on gold coast qld .

      • +6

I was with Boost for years, couldn't get basic websites to load in normal/non blackout areas, thought it was normal. Switched to Optus and everything is fast, haven't had issues anywhere yet.

      • +1

Complete opposite here in Regional Vic. My Optus Sim essentially stops working during peak times.

      • +1

I was with Optus. Tower congestion is now terrible. Optus told me to go to someone else.

Tried Boost, non usable from 2pm to 7pm. Outside that it is ok.

Voda/ Kogan are sadly the best. But no good when I head out bush..

Basically, we don't have a single decent Telco after the 3G shutdown…

As I watch uncle Elon launch another 1000 satellites…..not long now….

        • bring3Gback

          • @hopper: no point, the way if forward. Satellites are getting cheap, back in the days making a receiving a Satellite call would cost a fortune.

            • @sajidmib: Remember paying a 1 min satellite call $100 to Vodafone

      • I second that it is oversubscribed here in Melbourne outskirts as well… too many have jumped on the network. If you live around Metro areas Vodafone fares better.

  • +2

I got this deal back in November and the estimated CB approval is March of this year.

  • +1

200 gigs from 4th year.. shows continuous degradation of services in Australia with low quality network services getting expensive over time while the rest of the world going in the right direction..

    • i actually find mobile prices in australia still pretty compoetitive.

      • Yeah people have no idea how expensive it is in places like the US or Japan.

Japan you would be paying $50 for 20gigs a months on 5G. And won't even half the inclusions like international calls etc.

        Now cable/fibre internet….that's a different story.

    • +1

oh but remember that they're rolling out 5g and our country is so vast so consumers have to continue to pay more for this (non existent) rollout & so do taxpayers. watch gow much money they get for blackspots that will remain only available to their premium customers

      • +1

Starlink will soon force them all to be not much a month.

      • +3

I remember being shocked in the UK as to how bad the mobile reception was once you got out of a town or city.

Even along the motor ways there was miles of no reception.

When going along the route of Hadrians wall we had no reception for hours - lucky google allows downloading of maps.

I would say my experience is Australian mobile carriers offer a relatively lower priced service with generally better out of the city / town reception than most countries I have visited, which to me is a great achievement considering how much land mass needs coverage and how few people we have to fund it.

Compare the USA or Canada mobile plan costs to Australia and you will see we get a decent deal.

  • -7

This deal is for new services only which means new number.

    • +5

      Huh?

Can I keep my number when switching to Optus Prepaid?

Yes! Once you get your new SIM you will be able to choose to either keep your number or get a new one.

Head to optus.com.au/activate and have your new Optus Prepaid SIM and some ID handy.
Make sure your details match those provided to your current mobile provider.
On Step 3, select Keep Your Number.
We will send you an SMS to verify your number transfer, so please keep your current SIM in your device.
Note: Don’t disconnect your service with your current provider - the number needs to be active at the time of the transfer.

  • new customers only

    • +4

They have to beef up their numbers for the next data breach.

  • +17

As per CR representative written confirmation, there is no restriction to activate the sim within 30 days. Optus representative advised that the sim can be activated prior to date listed on the pack. Mine was May 2026 for Nov 2024 purchase.

Can someone update the main post to include the following confirmations. I am sure this will help to answer many enquiries.

    Cashrewards: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/82858/118813/screensho…

    Optus: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/82858/118814/screensho…

    • Good on ya mate!

  • Also keen to know when you must activate. Current Sim expires in May, can I hold off til then?

    • Answer above

  • Can you add a $5 number-sharing plan to this prepaid plan with Apple Watch?

    • +1

No. Post paid plans only right now.

    • +1

      That's for postpaid only

    • Nope, that is only for post paid sim plans on all 3 telcos :(

    • Just reminded me, back in the day, you can share your data to another phone for $5 a month. None of those exists anymore yeah?

  • FYI Optus has the longest porting time I have ever experienced, ported from Telstra to Optus took 3 days with numberous support chats. They had to get an internal ticket to have it "resolved".

    • I’ve never personally experienced this - normally all my ports are very fast, even to optus.

      • Yeah I ported from Boost to Optus yesterday and it only took 20 mins

    • I went in store last time I wanted a new sim card and they ported it over instantly for me, took maybe 10-15 minutes for my old number to be ported and working

    • +1

My friend and I had similar experiences. Was painful. Going in store might have been better because the online team is dreadful.

    • What evidence do you have the problem is on the Optus side rather than the Telstra side?

      • Telstra account cleared up in 5 mins after porting, sim stopped working, the Optus SIM started working only for receiving calls, no data and can't make calls, would that still be Telstra stopping an Optus sim working?>

    • +1

Agree, Optus sucks. Tried to port a number in after activating and online chat snd they just tried to sell me a new plan to swap numbers to, when I clearly have a plan already.

Tried a franchise store, no go.

Will now try an actual optus store and hope they can transfer the number after activation.

Honestly avoid if you can afford to!

      • That was so stupid, I got treated the same when I have 364 days left on my plan… what else do they expect

        • Eventually got through with a complaint and had to get a physical sim card from a store, then swapped my old number, and then had the plan transferred, albiet only after complaining again as it wasn't transferred over in 4 hours promised.
Lets hope they don't deny the cashback because of their horrible systems!

Time will tell if I'm sucked in by Optus in the future, because this honestly didn't feel like a good deal in the end!

  • Same to assume that cash back is not eligible if you try and get an eSIM?

    • I went in the store to swap to esim after activation, no extra charge.

  • Catch connect (optus network) users are considered new users right?

    • Yes. I did this.

  • Does anyone know if the $95 cashback expires today, or can you hold off and purchase closer to the 22nd when this deal expires?

  • +2

Another 77 days for the previous $100 cashback to be approved, hopefully……………………………..

  • +2

Regarding porting into Optus, here is my experience. I ported 3 family members from Kogan to Optus last month. 2 worked straight away. The last one hit a hiccup during the online activation. Online chat with an Optus team member resolved it and they performed the port at their end. The SIM did not need to be replaced.

All were in my name as they are for the kids so the identity check was the same for all. That is where you can have issues if you port and your details are slightly different. Middle name on the previous pre-paid, with none entered on the new service for example.

All 3 were via Cashrewards cashback and were tracked. Everything crossed for the payout!

  • +6

I know all telcos are dogs but remember when Optus (profanity) over almost half of Australia by letting personal details get accessed through being inept?

    Don't give them your money.

    • +6

      Username checks out

    • +1

Joke was on them..my details had already been taken by Equifax and Medibank Private and……

    • Almost forgot about that. Thankfully will never be with them.

    • +2

Yeah, and Shopback (a cash-rewards competitor) did this with half of ozbargain's details as well.

  • +2

To anyone considering this purchase (especially if you're in the Wollongong area), please have a look at the coverage map BEFORE committing to this purchase. I made the mistake of switching to this plan from Kogan Mobile, only to discover that Optus coverage down here has seemingly worsened over the last 12 months.

Previously, whenver I was in Wollongong, I was almost always receiving 5G, whether that be in the depths of the mall, or at the top of a North Gong apartment. Optus has stolen that from me. They appear to have disabled 5G coverage down here, and with the death of the 3G network, inside buildings, I am often left with an SOS only signal.

I distinctively remember them trialling it down here, only to now have the Optus map show that in NSW, there is no longer 5G coverage anywhere south of Sydney.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. CHECK THE COVERAGE MAP FIRST.

    • They have a 7-day trial which is handy

  • From what I read, can get cashback for 2 sims if you buy for seperate numbers and seperate transactions?

  • +11

I’d say no to the combination of Optus and Cashrewards. I’m still waiting for my $40 from half year ago.

    • +7

I'm in the same boat. They declined the cashback and i disaggreed with the decision with Cr. There's been no update for months and i doubt there will be.

      • -2

Same, but the rep approved the cashback out of pocket like a week ago. Ask for it to be escalated.

    • +2

In my case, CR had captured the click but cashback didn't track. I opened the case, they asked for proof of purchase and activation proof. I showed the invoice email and activation email. CR added the casback but its yet to be confirmed, the date is next month so from adding the cashback and confirmation (if it happens) 4 months of wait.

      • Assuming NO-selective scamming 🤔…

Simply put: buyers BEWARE…you're gambling! Bigger money-back claims are MORE risky!

OzBargainer can provide all the proof in the world, including video-recording of the whole buying process. Optus has the FINAL say, rely on their IT-tracking which is NEVER perfect & failed-claims NEVER receive Optus-record/proof of rejection.

The whole money-back system is NOT transparent. Even the T&Cs are never 100% spell out @ Optus &/or CashRewards & rely on OzBargain posts: be it OP &/or buyers' comments..often NOT fully noted in 1 post. Even words are subject to interpretations, eg 'NEW customers', 'NEW services' etc

Maybe 86 up-votes suggest that buyerS are willing to take the risk & confident of likely-success?

      • Human-interventions to system-tracking CAN make mistakes…

Jun-24 I made 3 Amaysim-CashRewards purchases, with 1st order system-tracked. 2nd was NOT-tracked & hence I rang Amaysim to cancel order. The 3rd was also NOT-tracked, but I went ahead with the order. 3rd order: when I 'Reported missing transaction', CashRewards referenced the 2nd cancelled-order.

        Order 1 & 2 was paid out in 7 days…one-off month only. I didn't claim the 3rd order…NOT a preditor.

Just noticed: 3rd order was approved on 23-Dec-24…6 months later & likely approved by different person.

    • Mine was initially rejected from Optus and I asked for it to be escalated. Optus was very dodgy and said that the transaction was attributed to another service (which was total BS as I ordered through the Cashrewards app). Eventually I got my $40 credited but it was a big process. A few others had success too. I would reply to CR and alert them to the original deal on OzB which identified a lot of people getting their Cashback unjustly denied. You would think CR would question it when 100% of Optus orders for the $40 Cashback got rejected, but they clearly don't care. But I agree with your initial statement, I wouldn't risk Optus Cashback again

  • +3

im still waiting for my cashback from august still…. flagged it and never get a response

    • Flag it again. I got mine credited after a few emails back and forth. Ask for it to be escalated

  • So the deal is $230 - $95CB?

    • Any answer ? So the deal is $230 - $95CB?

    • +2

      Answer: Yes

      • -1

If that’s the case I’m sold!

  • who got better overseas options vodafone prepaid or this one ?

    • it depends on country/state and the network they tie up with

  • +2

My CR was tracked within 5 minutes of purchasing this. FWIW.

    • +3

But tracking and actually being paid is different. Looking at some of the above negs, I'm unsure on pulling the trigger on this. CR hasn't been reliable lately.

      • My transaction also tracked within 5 minutes.
CR has been pretty reliable for me.

  • +1

What does new sign up mean? I had the same number with Optus before porting out about a year ago. Would I be a new user?

Also, do I need to use a different email than I used last time?

    Appreciate any help on these.

  • What's Philomena Cunk doing on ozbargain?

  • 280GB on first 3 recharges, then 200GB.????

    This mean NEXT year ???

    • Well it's a 12 month sim so I take it to mean 200gb on 4th year

  • +2

First time with Optus this year I got a similiar deal back in November. Bit of a pain to port over, have to speak with a chat agent and answer questions and theres a bit of back and forth which is a bit annoying, took around 20-25 mins all up.

    • Did you manage to get someone to port you through online chat or the phoneline?

They were less than helpful through online chat to port in an activated sim. Just kept trying to sell me a new plan !

      • +1

Online chat they ported me through, but it was a long process of filling in forms and sending back one time codes and sending the sim number again even though I had already done this in the first process before the chat agent. They were pretty helpful just a longer process than Im used to when porting to a new provider.
