          Something something inflation…

      • +10

Hahaha, good job trying to be smart

  • This any good?
The price compares with the 'freeze the brine bowl' ones but it's a compressor.
    Too good to be good?

    • +5

It's undoubtedly going to be a piece of crap that works OK for 6 months then breaks.

      • +2

as the saying goes…. you get what you pay for.

Sometimes Kmart appliances are surprisingly good for the price.

My $15 sandwich press is still going strong 7 years later.

Have one of their NutriBullet style blender that gets used a few times a week at our house that has been kicking along for about 7 years

            Still kickin'

Ideally it shouldn't. It's time to get a new one ;)

      • I would prefer it breaks quickly! Easy way to get a free ice maker for 6 months (refund once broken if you don't know what I'm getting at)

      • My steam oven, still good a lot better than normal toaster.

Made a pistachio ice cream yesterday with this machine. Messina quality.

      • Messina

        Messy Joe's?

      • Could i grab your recipe?

        • +1

          Courtesy of chatgpt:

          Ingredients:

1/3 cup pistachio cream (about 80g)

          2/3 cup heavy cream (160ml)

          1/3 cup whole milk (80ml)

2-3 tablespoons condensed milk (to taste, depending on desired sweetness

I would times the ingredients by 1.5 as it was under the max line. And make sure you select the second option of mix ingredients

Edit: pistachio cream is from Costco

          • +1

@Pab23q: Wait what pistachio cream is a thing???

            • @Astronaut Joe: So apparently everyone who goes to Costco puts one in their trolley haha. Its like Nutella but pistachio. $15 a jar I think.

              • @Pab23q: So it's sweet like how Nutella is, rather than savoury like peanut butter?

          • @Pab23q: Thank you! Ive been getting reduced cream recently so it making fancier flavours reasonable. Is the pistacio cream a standard costco item, or occasional? Makes pistacio prep a bit easier! Will have to order through family.

            • @Embaloo: I think it's standard but I hear it sells out quickly when they stock up. You can pay double the price from Amazon if you don't have a Costco near you:

      • how long was the process?

        • +1

          50 mins

          • @Pab23q: Faster with a frozen bowl one (in place of the condenser)?

    • +1

Got one a few days ago and it’s absolutely awesome. Made some with fresh cream and chopped up boost bars and another with dairy free yogurt and both came out perfect. Get it!

  • +10

We got anko ice cream maker before GTA 6

  • +3

I'd try it for that price, anyone got any protein powder recipes they enjoyed using it?

  • +2

I'd get this but I just know for a fact I'd get bored of it after half a dozen uses and just go back to buying tubs of ice cream and the machine would just sit in the cupboard haha.

  • +1

Was going to buy the ALDI one but this is 3 times cheaper. Thanks!

  • +1

Damn that's cheap! I ended up succumbing to the ninja, but i would have tried this.

"Ready within 60 minutes" makes it sound like the compressor is pretty weak.

    • +1

It is weak but it depends. I did one from scratch and was ready in an hour. Seconds was I made was already cool from the fridge and it took like 25 minutes.

    • +3

The ice cream made by the ninja one was better, not sure if it was the recipe or the device but my brother made ice cream with that and the consistency was better compared to what I made yesterday. Still very good for the price.

  • Not sure how this compares to aldi one. Made first ice cream with it last night and it was alright. Like others said not expecting to work more than 6 months.had a bit of whining when spinning and fluctuating but worked ok eventually.

    • -1

      how lunch was the process>?

      • +12

        I dinner know sorry.

        • +4

If its already whining and spinning and fluctuating, it is likely to breakfast.

  • +1

the question is it cheaper to make your own ice cream rather than just buying it?

    • still cheaper. look how much messina charged people to buy frozen based water product with flavours ie icecream

    • +8

That's not what these machines are designed for - they allow you to make your own ice cream with or without artificial fillers, preservatives and colourings. If you're doing it to save $, buying bulk ultra processed is way cheaper in the short term (your long term health costs on the other hand….).

      • +2

Agree 100% - as an example here is what's in the ingredients of a simple Connoisseur classic vanilla:

        Skim Milk (Concentrate or Solids)
        Cream (Milk)
        Water
        Glucose Syrup
        Sugar
        Vegetable Origin Emulsifier (471)
        Vegetable Gums (410, 412)
        Flavours (contains Milk)
        Madagascan Vanilla Extract (0.05%)
        Colour (160b)

        • +1

I especially like it when they put Flavours in, it can be literally anything

    • +3

Living rural, the only question is quality. Woolworths is a four hour return drive, and until we bought the Ninja, we'd have to use a camping freezer to get icecream.

      • What's the ninja? The creami? If so, completely different product. I use both - compressor to make the ice cream, creami to enhance or after freezing.

    • -5

      1L mid-quality ice-cream (e.g. Connoisseur) = $6 on special, or $12 'RRP'. Fancier ones are around double that (~$10 for 500mL).

For 500mL home made, let's say 200mL cream ~$4 , 200mL milk ~50c, other fillings ~$1. So ~$11 per litre, so not really cheaper than your mid-range, but half the price of your fancy ones. And if you're making your own ice cream, why wouldn't you go fancy?

That's if you're comparing to supermarket options; comparing to a gelato shop you're definitely saving money.

      • +5

I think your numbers are off -

        Woolworths Milk 3l =$4.35 = $1.45L = $0.29 for 200ml

        Woolworths Cream 600ml =$4.50 =$1.50 for 200ml

So $1.79 + whatever fillers. Works out a lot cheaper.

        • Milk is within the approximation (also, going for higher-quality). I was choosing the pure cream/double cream, which you'd probably want in this case, as I'm trying to compare with fancier ice-creams.

But let's compare cheaper-ingredient icecream as per your numbers; Blue Ribbon is $6.50 for 2L, so $1.60 for 500mL. So about the same as home made.

    • We stopped making our own when we were spending close to 2x on good quality ingredients than just getting a decent tub when it's on sale at woolies/coles. Can't imagine how much that multiplier is 5+ years later with current grocery pricing.

    • If you want fancy flavours then yes, it's well worth making your own. It's impossible to find blueberry ice cream with more than a trace of actual fruit.

      • Coles has blueberries sorbet, if you like sorbet

        • Ok ok I bought one I will give it a crack :D

  • Target same price (OOS @Catch)
Ordered, but Target didn't allow OnePass free delivery.
As its 6Kg & currently can't drive - much easier delivered free via Kmart than c&c @Target!

  • Excited to try, any simple recipe suggestions that worked out well for ya please..

  • +1

Oh man, we considered it when we saw the Aldi one. And decided that we don't need it and Connoisseur will do just fine.

And now I've ordered one of these. :-)

  • Maximum capacity: 500ml

    No wonder it's cheap.

    • +1

Is a reasonable point - but 500ml will make 800ml of well churned icecream. A decent sittings worth for 2 folks, is actually handy in a way as the product doens't benefit from being brought out and put away etc - so the ability to consume in a single sitting is reasonable.

Suspect it might be an identical machine to Aldi's under the skin, the fact it only has to churn 500ml vs the 750 in the Aldi one might make for better longevity.

I have the Aldi one, works very well.

  • Two left at Munno Para as at 30 mins ago

  • +1

This is a really good price for a machine with a compressor

    • +1

Honestly worth it just to rip it open and use the compressor for diy purposes. Amazing.

  • i bought 2 of these last weekend.. OMFG is so good
    45-60mins ice cream done

    • Gym calling… well, give it a hold.

  • Ordered this morning
    7 hrs later gets cancelled….

  • Do u need to put sugar in ice cream?

    FRESH STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM
135g fresh strawberries, stemmed and sliced
    30g freshly squeezed lemon juice
    60g sugar, divided
    130g whole milk
    130g heavy cream
    1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
In a small bowl, combine the strawberries with the lemon juice and 30g sugar, stir
gently, macerate the strawberries in the juice for 2 hours.
In a medium bowl, use a hand mixer or a whisk to combine the milk and 30g sugar
until the sugar is dissolved. Split the juice from the strawberries and stir in the
heavy cream and vanilla. Pour the mixture into the ice-cream barrel, turn on the
appliance and start to make ice-cream, it will be ready in 50-60 minutes. Add the
sliced strawberries at the last 5 minutes.

    • well you need something if you want it sweet

      • Something can be: xylitol, erythritol or, best of all, allulose.

        • +1

yeah I found a few good keto ice cream Recipes.

          Keto Chocolate icecream you need

          • Unsweetened Cocca Powder
          • Monk Fruit natural sweetener
          • Pure Vanilla Extract
          • Xylitol

not bad if you want a low carb no sugar ice cream.

          • @kungfuman: You probably don't need the xylltol as well? Or is that meant to thicken?

            • @Moses: Mostly all Stevia and monk fruit sweeteners I've seen for sale are 1% Stevia/monk fruit, 99% erythritol. Nothing against erythritol, but not worth any premium just for the marketing.

            • @Moses: O I should have said you have 2 options of sweetness for that recipe u just choose the one u like more it’s a simple chocolate keto ice cream recipe though not a lot of ingredients which is good

              • @kungfuman: You're missing the cream, surely.

                • +1

@wisdomtooth: O yeah your right I forgot to put thicken cream in there

                • +1
                  • @kungfuman: Keto chocolate ice cream recipe

                    Ingredients:
1 Cup (235mL) Heavy Whipping Cream
                    1 1/2 Tbsps (7g) Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
                    2 Tbsps (24g) Confectioners Swerve
                    1 Tsp (3g) Vanilla Extract

PRO-TIP: Use Xylitol if freezing for more than 1 day. It will keep the keto ice cream creamier. The ice cream may need up to 30 minutes to defrost depending how frozen it is, so let it set at room temp until it softens up to your liking.

                    • @kungfuman: I've been doing this:
                      150ml light thickened cream
                      150ml light milk
                      40g Stevia
Partially thawed and muddled frozen blueberries (I didn't measure, but likely less than half a cup)

Right now I'm trying choc chip with the same base, but replacing the blueberries with 1 shot of sugar free vanilla maple syrup (I've run out of vanilla extract) and 35g of cocoa nibs. I've worked out the calories at 275 for half the end product. No idea if the measurements of syrup and nibs are going to work yet.

    • Sugar is the thing that stops it from going rock hard. So yes you definitely need it.

      • +1

        Xylitol works just as well

  • Does it freeze well or meant to eat all of it straight away?
