You could probably get a working wii for $14.99? 😅

    • Few years back, you could get one for 30 odd in any Cashies. Now they're juuuuust old enough I'm starting to see people try to flog them for around a hundred again :'(

      • Some cashies in Adelaide at least sell them in munted condition for around $20 and under. I’ve been to some stores with piles of them. I used to buy them clean them and resell them on ebay…

But things change I spose… I remember when DSes, and Gameboy Advances were super cheap in cashies and now they try to sell them for hundreds

        • I bought a GBA in GameTraders like 15 years ago for 5 bucks. Countless other Game Boys (and games) for 5/10 as well.

Now a dirty ass one that looks like it was stuck in a microwave for half an hour will fetch triple digits. No one does inflation as well as Nintendo.

    Unsure of the quality difference.

However you can get various versions of this for $5 to $10 aud on aliexpress

    • +1

Correct. This looks exactly like the Aliexpress ones that cost $1~$5.

As someone who has both types of sets for a few years now, I can say the Xiaomi one is far better quality. It comes with an aluminium case as opposed to cheap plastic that is misaligned. That parts feel nicer and sturdier. It will last. The cheaper set feels exactly cheaper in every aspect. In my opinion it is worth spending more for a better quality set. $15 isn't much for a decent set anyway.

I originally got a cheap set to keep in a different part of my house, but I will still always use the Xiaomi one every time.

Edit: further, the case on Xiaomi is magnetic and slides off nicely. The cheap set has a front that clips on to cheap plastic. Probably wouldn't last with semi regular use

Schmatt is spot on here. I've had the Xiaomi set for years and besides a little bit of surface rust it's going strong. I've also purchased one of the AliExpress knock offs (and I love an AliExpress knock off) but they aren't comparible.

Did you get them when they were a wiha collaboration though? I've got 2 of these kits from then, excellent, however they seem to have changed to the mi logo and wiha no longer are mentioned. Design still looks good, but I'm not sure these are the quality of a few years back anymore

          • @Salmando: @Salmando, yep. Purchased in 2019 from Shopro.

          • +2

@Salmando: I had the Wiha set. It was amazing.

I lost it and bought a separate Wiha branded one as well as a nee Xiaomi one. The new one is alright but the bits aren't as good as the Wiha ones. Definitely alright for the price.

I saw Wiha stock still going for 40AUD+. At that price, you can put a bit more and get a Wiha branded one (still the xiaomi handle/bit holder is also pretty nice).

            • +1

@Schrodinger: Good to know. Glad i got a second kit after i thought i lost i single bit in my first. I miss the days of anything Xiaomi here being impossibly cheap

              • @Salmando: Absolutely! I wish I bought another those days. Esp when the prices dipped later on.

There was a period where I'd search for a Xiaomi version of anything I'd want to buy and that'd be great.

The first gen Xiaomi robot vacuum seemed to clean the house somewhat more thoroughly than the 4x-5x more expensive flagship vacuum I bought recently. An MI4 I bought was the most repairable smart-phone I've seen. First gen mi band had a really long battery life and wouldn't feel like a thing compared to the newer alternatives and smart watches.

Xiaomi still has good collabs like Xiaomi Zmi No.20 but they are no longer that cheap and has too many competing products to choose from.

    • +2

Some of the cheaper sets have a plastic handle. The one you've linked looks to be one of them.

They're ok for light use but that's about it. Xiaomi set feels much nicer and comes out for any serious screwing or when precision is needed.

    • Bought the $5 one from AliExpress a few years back thinking the same.

Sorely disappointed when it came. Case was plastic, handle was plastic, I tried to use it to gently pry something (I know, not intended purpose) and with a philips bit and the bit-holder snapped.

If other peoples review is anything to go by, definitely spend the extra $10 for the Xiaomi. FWIW, I just ordered one to replace my cheaper knockoff.

  • I’ve got this kit and it has been very useful with odd tear downs of electronic devices. Would recommend for those that are handy.

  • Quality screwdriver set, the bits included in this don't warp when unscrewing tight screws like cheaper electronics screwdrivers do.

  • Thanks op

I'm sure I have this (somewhere?), and I can remember I was impressed for the price at the time.
However, just a heads up to anyone considering using the 14 day free First trial. Some seriously bad reviews on line from people who have had their accounts plundered by Kogan, because apparently there is no easy way to cancel the trial membership before it expires and Kogan pounces on your account for an easy $129..!! Also, there is no direct phone contact with Kogan, so e-mails seem to be ignored or people receiving generic useless replies through delay tactics until the 14 day expiration date passes!.

might be able to sign up with a disposable number revolut style?

      • I'm not quite following, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you need to sign up with a bank account or CC number?

        • +2

The idea is to use a disposable CC number that you can terminate anytime, as opposed to a CC that is used for other purposes and would present more work if you cancelled it.

    • +1

+1 on the non-existent customer service with Kogan - been there and would not recommend

    • +2

That’s why I cancelled straight away after purchase. Easy to do on the app

    • +1

I normally just use PayPal, then go into my PayPal authorised payers area and end the authorisation.
It doesn't notify them that it happens, just when they attempt to take more money it's declined on their end. 😂

EDIT: I just noticed that Kogan doesn't let you use PayPal on the sign up link.

EDIT 2: You can use PayPal if you make the account first instead of going directly through the link.

      • That's some good info, but now I'm confused. I recall I ended authorisation that way through PayPal for a disgusting mob called Hello Fresh. They are relentless!! On the same day I ended the authorisation, I was bombarded with emails begging me to reconsider. Why the f*K, I have no idea.?

    • +1

I just signed up for trial and can cancel the trial on the browser in 5sec without any problems.

  • I just used mine 5 minutes ago haha ^_^

Look maybe this isn't the same but…

    • I would rather spend the $4 extra to know that I was not buying a bogus copy, which that probably is.

      • +1

No worries. I mean I only use these for fixing glasses or small things occasionally not disarming bombs so not too stressed.

        • I have a cheap screwdriver set that works for that kind of thing. I know what you mean, but probably better off going the real deal for a lousy $15. My set will last for years and years.

  • +2

This kit used to be branded Mi/Wiha. I reckon Mi has been OEMing the kit for Wiha since long time ago. Now it is branded by Mi solely. I have this kit for ten years, top quality.

    • +2

Wiha are a big brand, i doubt The Mi brand would hide it. Wonder if the quality is still the same as the old kits we have

Thanks OP, been after a T8 tamper proof torx to fix my PS5. Perfect timing.

  • Does it comes with attachment small enough to adjust glasses and sunglasses screws for tightness ?

  • This or the 46-piece electric cordless screwdriver thats also on sale at Kogan? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/887048

      Thank you, bought

  • Really hard to get leverage on this when you have a tight tiny screw.

  • Dawn I bought this for $50 in Shanghai

    • How? The RRP of this in China is 100 RMB which is slightly over $20.

      • Oh that was 3 years ago, but I belive RRP at that time was $50 in a Mi flagship store

  • Received.. was not expecting it to arrive this quickly. These are faaaar better than the $5 aliexpress knockoffs.
