Who Keeps Their Leftover Ham Bone?

Now Christmas is over, I wonder how many of OzBargainers here are true Bargainers?

Do you chuck out the ham-bones, Turkey / Chicken Carcass?

i wash cling wrap and reuse
when frying bacon i keep the fat and use them as oil when frying other things
i flip my underwear so i can wash less often and save electricity

    • First 2 ok
      But underwear? Yucks!

Why would you waste money on underwear

      • They steal other ppls from their soiled laundry basket

      • Hahaha

      • fun to tear off?

How do you wash cling wrap and not have it wind up a twisted, stuck mess? I sometimes throw out fresh cling wrap because I can't get it to work how I want (I don't use it very often though)

The underwear doesn't work for me because of the creation of Lake Buttcrack that happens in my pants on a hot day. I've picked up underpants the next day that were still damp, it is kinda gross what happens down there.

I'm with you on the bacon though, using that to fry things is one of the quiet joys in life.

We use bones, but your question made me think. Prawn head stock is on the list for next year.

How else do you make pea and ham soup in winter?

  • I turfed the turkey carcass this year. To many leftovers as we had a few people bail and I couldn't be arsed steaming up the kitchen making stock.

Usually I would keep it, but really stock is much nicer the more meat there is on there. Wait for a cheap chicken deal and stock up on that,

    • I shall await your next Reciipe. Cheers!

I chew on it for a while then I bury it in the backyard

I am aiming for "full carnivore" this year. I boiled/simmered the ham bones for a couple of hours; then left them to cool a bit. The marrow became soft at the ends and tastes really good. I have frozen the liquid broth for future sauces/gravy (which I might or might not ever actually use; but I respect my intention to 😊). Happy New Year to you all. Keep savvy!

Chuck it in the freezer then enjoy making stock in winter.

We have chickens at home, bought a special bone grinder. Sun dry the bones and grind to a powder and feed it to the chickens, great source of calcium for them.

They eat all our food waste as well, only downside is the additional flies you have to deal with.

    • Wow, this is the best!

There’s still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you’ve got a stew going.

    • Yes, hence I keep on keeping them, ignoring frown from other family members…

  • Well, look like most of us are True OzBargainer! Keep chomping!
    See you next year!
