Efficient way to "free up space" on Photo-taking Phone as part of Photo-Taking Phone -> Pixel 1 Unlimited Google Photos Upload?

As alluded to in this deal, this is a reference to Google Photos unlimited photo/video upload via a Google Pixel (OG) or Google Pixel XL.

I've currently got it set up via SyncThing-Fork. Basically, I'm trying to figure out a way to use the "Free Up Space" function on my photo-taking phone (Oppo Find X5 Pro bought from here lol), so that once the photo/video is uploaded from my Google Pixel OG, I can efficiently remove the pics from the Find X5 Pro in one tap.

For example, I took some photos today which have already been sync'd to Google Photos via the Pixel OG. When I view the photo in Google Photos on my Oppo, there's a small cloud with a tick in the bottom right corner of the photo thumbnail which indicates it's been sync'd.

However, when I tap "Free up space on this device" on my Oppo, it says "Nothing to free up", even though I haven't deleted the photos taken from today off my Oppo.

When I tried it a few days ago, it did seem to kinda work as it let me free up ~20GB. A few days prior to that, I also managed to free up ~60GB - so clearly it's picking something up. For the record, Google Photos backup is off on my Oppo, so it has to have picked up pics uploaded via the OG Pixel..

A suggestion which I thought was pretty smart that I found online: Have your camera folder from the Oppo sync to the OG Pixel in "Send & Receive" mode, as opposed to "Send Only". This makes it such that when your OG Pixel receives the photo, syncs it, and you subsequently delete it off the OG Pixel using "Free up space", this deletion will flow back to the Oppo. I tried that briefly but it didn't seem to work.

Any ideas?

As a side question: Has anyone experimented with using SyncThing vs Resilio Sync vs FTP via Solid Explorer or any other methods? What are the pros and cons of each?

    get a synology NAS
you can create automated task, when you back from photo hunting activities, arrive home, and your phone connects to your home wifi, the app on your phone will upload all the new photos to your NAS. it knows not duplicating the photos.
then, every night before you sleep you can just select all photos and delete them (on your phone, not on the NAS)

Thanks for the idea but still sounds like a tad too much effort compared to what I'm after!!

But, it looks like you've also been mind blown by Revanced Google Photos, so I think we both know what we're doing next…

      • looks risky for me so i will still keep the backup on my NAS as above - full quality photos (unlimited as long you have $ to buy HDDs) -and then from the NAS i upload to google drive (with less quality, doesn't matter).
have you read my reddit link below there is a post about other trick spoofing not just revance

        • have you read my reddit link below there is a post about other trick spoofing not just revance

Yes I pretty much read the whole thing

I actually have two OG pixels

One is a real OG Pixel, i.e. not spoofed

The other is a "fake" pixel, actually an old Sharp Aquos phone bought from here and spoofed to pretend to be an OG Pixel via Pixelify.

It's definitely a lot more effort to root a phone and fake being a Pixel than just using something like Revanced Google Photos, so to be honest, using Revanced Google Photos is way more attractive. I just wonder if it's riskier using the Revanced method vs the spoofing method that I'm already using.

    • That sounds amazing compared to what I have at the moment. 2x 8TB iron wolf drives with a wavlink that duplicates.

I have to manually move the files when I am free.

Not tech savvy, can you please provide links to which NAS system you use and automated tasks? Keen to implement at home

      • Nas: any Synology nas.
App: Ds file app, made by Synology. (Ios Android available)

Revanced Google photos also works if you want unlimited photos uploading with fewer steps.

    • wow i only knew revanced is for youtube.
but wait, how can we upload unlimited if our google drive is limited in size?

      • +3

You can patch the google photos app to trick google into thinking you're using a pixel 1 (the same way Pixelify spoofs it). You get the same benefit as buying a pixel 1 but likely with more risk.

      Wtfffff Revanced Google Photos!!
Just like CyberMurning below, I am aware of (and using) Revanced YouTube, which is probably their most famous app? I am also aware there's all this other Revanced stuff. I think I've come across Revanced YouTube Music and Revanced Reddit or Spotify before? Never looked into them though

Wtf at Revanced Google Photos - how have I never heard of this? It must be new lol

      Thanks for the suggestion! @tomclancy

edit: Ok no wonder why I haven't heard of it. It's only 2 months old. The reddit post I was reading makes it feel a little scarier than using Pixelify and/or Revanced Youtube though lol

Undecided as to whether I plan to use this on a secondary account, or a main account.

      • If you rely on your main account for Gmail, I would recommend using a secondary account

        • the point is not the google account but the photo what if google decides to remove the storage ie the photos after finding out we are spoofing i mean im sure they know right if ozb know

          • @CyberMurning: They may just end up banning your account instead of removing your photos. Previously, it was more difficult to spoof the device because it required rooting but now it's just one patch away, Google may not like that.

If you value your photos the only solution is to pay for either a cloud service (Google Photos) or a NAS/home server like you have recommended

            • @FFx0: yep the keyword is "May" hehe but we are talking about photos here probably photos of families or babies that we never get to recreate.
heck, even my gmail account is precious as it has all the important email trails from like 20 years ago.

by the way, is there a way to back up our gmail? to the NAS is possible.

Another vote for patching Google Photos with Revanced. Don't waste any more time with syncthing / pixel 1 OG.

So much stuffing around and reinventing the wheel. Just buy a phone with a SD card slot. One touch and infinite upgrades for life to snowball your collection.

Just buy a phone with a SD card slot.

This is really not that straightforward anymore. I mean, sure there isn't necessarily a shortage of such phones, but the majority of flagships do not have a SD card slot anymore

However, you're giving a completely alternate and different suggestion.

Google Photos is cloud storage. I'm trying to get my photos/videos uploaded such that they don't count towards my Google account's quota. A SD Card slot does not achieve that.

    • In addition to illumination's comment above, this also puts risk on a) the SD card not going bad; and b) you not losing your phone. That's too much risk for me so I'll go with the cloud solutions (FYI I have a home NAS with immich)

  • i think with trying to get our google drive become unlimited , this is already in different territory comparing with say youtube revanced, or sailing high seas.
i mean there are no direct loss for those people with revanced youtube, but taking the GBs of space from google, while they are selling it for $ is kind of yeah… well…. .., i bet they will not like it… you need to get ready of loosing the photos one day, which defeat the whole discussion here (backing up).

  • Once the photos are backed up in Google Photos cloud, you can delete them from your Oppo device and still view them via Google Photos (as you know).

So do a one way sync to the pixel to get the photos sync.

Every now and then, when you are sure the Oppo is in sync, you have to delete the files from it.

You have to do this via the files app or the Oppo photo app, don't do it via Google Photos, otherwise this will delete them from your Google Photos account.

Do this with some test photos if you are unsure of the process before a mass photo delete.

    • You have to do this via the files app or the Oppo photo app, don't do it via Google Photos, otherwise this will delete them from your Google Photos account.

This is not actually true, because there are multiple ways you can delete via Google Photos.

When viewing photos on a phone that has a local copy and a backed up copy, you get the following deletion options:

      1. Bin: This means "delete from Google Photos" and it will sit in an online "bin" for 30 days
      2. Delete from device - pretty straightforward (this is what I want, and what you're suggesting)
      3. Move to archive - if this counts as a "deletion" option…

I'm trying to find a bulk way to do #2, which is possible via the "Free up space" function. And the point of this post is that I am finding the function doesn't seem to work reliably with this syncing method,

      • This is not actually true, because there are multiple ways you can delete via Google Photos.

This is true, but I didn't want you to go to this method just incase you screwed it up 😂

I'm trying to find a bulk way to do #2, which is possible via the "Free up space" function.

Meh, doing it manually from time to time seems just as easy as trying to piss fart around to get this to work.

I believe the issue is Google Photos will only delete items that are BACKED UP when you ask it to clean up the device, So as you are not backing up your local photos via Google Photos, then the option to remove backed up files doesn't do anything. As far as Google Photos is concerned they are not backed up.

So when your phone is running out of space, ensure photos are in sync, if so, open oppo photo app, select all, delete all. Empty bin. Done.

Rinse and repeat every few months.
