  • Other than design: How is this different to the original v1 switch?

    • +3

Original is on/off as seperate buttons. This one they share a button and the "hue" button can be programmed to do select functions.

    • IDK as I only have V2 switches. This comparison may help.

    • +2

Most of what they say is just software. On both models you can really configure 4 buttons to do whatever you want, with Hue Essentials app, or Home Assistant etc.

Old model had CR2450 battery, which lasts for years but harder to find. New one has a much smaller cr2032.

    • I visually like the design of these better then my v1 but pretty disappointed in build quality in comparison. The faceplate for the holder is really loose and feels cheap when pressing on the remote in comparison and I don't think I see many people talk about this.

  • Anyone integrated this with Home Assistant as a group of buttons?

    • +1

Yep. Works fine with this blueprint

    • you can configure all 4 buttons to do anything you want, single press, long press, etc with HA automations, out of the box, no blueprint needed. I have one in every room controlling Lifx lights on/off, brightness up\down, and white temperature. u do need a hue bridge though.

      • I use a Hue bridge, but can't you also directly connect to HA using ZHA or Z2M ?

        • aah yeah, probably! i have never tried, all my stuff is wifi so i just got the bridge for the switches.

        • I have the HA ZBT-1 stick with ZHA, not using a hue bridge. Using them with Lifx lights and other bits, for example there are occasions I don’t want my front door to lock itself when it’s closed, so I’ve set one of the buttons in the entry to disable that automatic lock when door closed automation.

My lights are motion/presence activated, they will turn on at 40% in the middle of the night, and I’ve got a button set so that a long press bumps them to 100% if I really need to see that cup at the back of the cupboard.

These V2 seem to be more reliable, the V1s kept dropping off the network so I replaced them all.

        • +1

Indeed, I'm using Hue devices in Home Assistant using Zigbee2MQTT and a SONOFF ZBDongle-E USB Dongle Plus. Works perfectly.

  • +2

Thanks OP! Just price beat at Bunnings for 22.46

  • What is special about this switch that the hue app or Google home cannot do ?

    • +10

Nothing. But sometimes it's just easier to press a button…

    • +3

Using an app or talking to a device to turn lights on and off can be a pain in the ass sometimes

      • +1

Me to Google 'turn off all the lights'

Hub screen displays my TTS 'turn off all the lights'

Google says 'I turned 15 things on'.

        Like WTF.

        • +1

Turning on lights with your voice sounded great in theory in the 90s, in reality in 2024 it sucks.

          • +1

@bleeder: Yeah, I feel like voice recognition/AI in this space hasn't developed along with everything else. I use the same commands at the same time of day, and it still messes it up. I think it needs to be batting over 95% to be useful and anything below that is just frustrating. I like buttons to trigger scenes/sequences and stuff.

    • +3

Sometimes its just easier to push a button. For me it also has a higher WAFR (Wife approval factor rating) then using an app or voice assistant.

      • Totally agree… It also makes things simpler for visitors to your house trying to figure out bathroom lights etc…. Even tho they will inevitably turn it on/off at the physical switch and drive you nuts!

        • 1c solution: masking tape over switch. Stops my sensor lights from being deactivated. 99% reliable, 1% chance of wife cleaning it off :-)

  • Can you integrate multiple lights to one? Planning to have 6 in living room but want to control with 1 switch?

    • Yes. Simple with the Hue app. Make a group of the 6 lights, and the switch controls the group as one.

      • Perfect! Thanks. Any RGB equivalent?

        • I set my "kitchen" group of 8 downlights/strips to illuminate with different colours and different intensities with the Hue button. Cycles through 5 preset scenes so I don't have to fiddle around in the app when I want everything on, just cabinet lighting, or night lights. Works perfectly for my and (more importantly) my wife's needs.

  • It said exclusive for hue lights. That means I cannot use it to replace existing dimmer switch. Can anyone confirm?

    • +2

I'm pretty sure you cannot. It connects to the lights via wifi and hue hub. There's nothing hardwired in these and in fact they are only held on by magnets.

  • Any way to use this with LIFX? People don't seem to like using the app or asking Siri.

    • +1

You can do it via Home Assistant. The blueprint is linked in another reply.

  • How does one get started to convert to smart lights?
Does one bulb really cost $79? Seems…expensive
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/philips-hue-colour-gu10-b…

    • +1

I would suggest getting the starter kit (3x bulbs, 1x bridge/hub, and 1x switch) when it's on sale….

It does seems daunting compared to normal lights, but once you get going, you'll never go back. The simple fact you can turn off all your lights from bed is worth it :P

    • +1

If you want to minimise costs it requires patience. I started out with a bunch of $10 LIFX (wifi only) then sourced some cheap Hue B22 & E27; then GU10 in white ambiance, $48 for a 2-pack (2022) and around $20 for a pre-owned bridge.

    • +1

Forgot to add, IKEA led bulbs work with Hue

  • I have some grid connect smart lights that I bought from
Bunnings about 5 years ago , can these be controlled using the Hue bridge and this dimmer switch ?

    • Out of the box, no. Hue products work mainly within the Hue ecosystem. You'll need something else like Home Assistant if you want to mix and match different ecosystems.

  • JB Hi Fi have them 4 for $64

    • I think you'll find that's just one colour downlight

Post as a deal if you found better :-)

      • I've never posted a deal. I have the picture from the in store promo. Its not on JB website for some reason. Can I post a deal without a link and just a picture :)

        • Yep, post with picture - but the issue is that it may not qualify: not enough stock/not widely available etc. Mods will decide :-)

Great deal if is allowed! IIRC, I thought I got a steal when I picked up 5 of these downlights for $49.20 each and a lightstrip in 2020 for my new kitchen…

        • which store was this? Could you post a pic?

    • Awesome, got a link?

  • Are these the same size as a standard Australian light switch so you can decommission the old switch and mount this in the wall plate hole? Or how does one go about mounting it?

    • The previous version came with double sided tape, but I just use the command strips for easy removal.

    • The backing has screw holes that match the wall plate. I have undone the physical switch from my lights and left them in the wall cavity. This was the last resort since my wife keeps turning it off at the switch.

  • Just bought 2 of these for $31 each few weeks ago from Amazon 🥲

  • Do you guys install this yourself or generally use electrician?

    • +1

This switch is wireless - no electrician required.

Lights all have std AU plug to transformer, so provided you have a GPO in the right place (e.g. downlight), they're just PnP.

  • I ‘ ve 2 already, easy peasy turn on different lights once are all set. Just need to add more lights, I’m really looking for Boxing Day deals

  • About to set up Home Assistant for the first time, will it work well with Home Assistant? Are there better options available?

    • Very.
Not that I know of. Alternative option is TP-Link Tapo dial. Nanoleaf have one, not sure about HA compatibility.

    • Another option HA compatibility wise would be the IKEA switches. Not necessary better, the ikea switches would have the same buttons to be used for on/off and dimming with the long press, which is less convenient.
