First Credit Card - So Many Options

Hi all,

Am I bit lost. Looking to get my first credit card
Interested in
- points
- travel insurance (I fly every month or second month x 4 family members - domestic as we live in a rural area)
- smart phone etc damage cover would be nice

But reading through all the threads here, so many options.

Just settled on our first home, so I feel now a bit more free and able to get a credit card without affecting our home loan application.

I have read the comparisons such as these but am still a bit lost

2 good options seem to be (based on above spreadsheet)
https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/citi-premier-card…
https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/nab-rewards-signa…

If it matters, financially I am disciplined so interest etc won't be an issue

I have a revenue office (changed PPOR to IP) bill of 7k and a ATO bill of 3k I need to pay soon which if possible may help get over the payment amount required for bonus point.

Thank you!

If you're flying that often the Citi Prestige card may be for you. Unlimited priority pass is great for using for food at airports (and to a lesser extent, lounge access). If you book hotels and can take advantage of the 4th night free then it's quite useful as well.

    • That seems like a great option (especially 4th night free!) Thank you for the reccommendation!

    • does the citi prestige offer unlimited priority pass with the airport restaurant option?

I know the amex platinum business does not, only unlimited lounges

      • Citi Prestige includes restaurant option for PP.

But OP is flying domestic, unless flying from main hubs like Syd,Melb or Bris, the options are quite limited for PP.

First credit card - so many options

    Get a debit card.

    • JV, OzB royalty, can you take 5 mins from your daily ****posting duties and elaborate? Many thanks

      • Only use credit for investments

        • Perhaps invest in a Joint Venture?

If you are disciplined then the credit cards are very useful.
          - free credit period
          - keeping track of purchases
          - free travel insurance
          - increased warranty on purchases
          - backing out transactions that don’t complete properly
          - points for travel.

The family home isn’t an investment but most people use credit for it. Frankly I would be wary to use credit to speculate on an investment unless it was extremely low risk.

  • I'd only choose a card that direct earns either Qantas or Velocity points; less susceptible to future devaluation imposed by card issuers with their own currencies. If you have future plans to travel overseas I rate QF over VA.

Probably forget that idea, ATO and other government payments usually excluded from rewards points.

    • buy giftcards, use them immediately to pay ATO bills. double dipping.

otherwise use sniip to get around. Fees apply — read the fine print.

  • The trade off is points vs fees. In our case there are two of us so we try to build up to get business tickets to fly to somewhere in Europe. I have a NAB Qantas card and my other half has a Virgin Credit card. If possible we fly over on the points from one program and back with the points from the other. We get points from a number of loyalty schemes to build up. It probably helps if you’ve got some idea what your ultimate goal is. As well as the points to fly we used the NAB travel insurance when we went overseas in September.

In relation to the phone I would get a decent cover.

    Good luck.

  • Data in spreadsheet is out of date. I suggest NAB Qantas Rewards Premium. Offers 70k QFF points on signup but most importantly, up to $50k in travel cancellation costs. ANZ QFF Premium is similar but only offers $20k cancellation.

    • Maybe a card worth churning otherwise the 0.67 points per dollar earn rate is on the low side.

      • Yeah mostly for travel insurance.
