Not exactly an earth-shattering deal, but in case you're in the market for a Kobo this is the starting point for various options for deal stacking.

You can mix and match (most of these will be for JB Hifi but your mileage may vary):

N.B. some of these will end up with you having something like an EFTPOS card (e.g. Special). JB for instance, won't let you use multiple cards as payment, so you need to buy their gift card and then redeem those against your order and pay any remaining balance with your own credit card.

I was able to combine the first 2 above to get myself the Clara Colour for $200 click-and-collect, which is less than the current ATL for a device only released earlier this year, so can't complain.

Just checked Amazon AU and apparently there is only 2 in stock and it won't be delivered until 31/12/24… so not ideal if it's a Chrissy pressie.

Have added links. Someone else already removed the other stores reference from the title.

  • How they compare to kindle?

    • +7

Depends which ecosystem you want to be locked into (if you're not sailing the high seas). My main reason for going Kobo was because Kindles are locked out of Overdrive/Libby in Australia, which means no access to free eBooks from public libraries.

      • +3

This is pretty much the main reason why I've got a Kobo for my daughter, that she can read library books on a e-reader rather than her laptop..

    • +4

Very favorably in my opinion and experience.

There's nothing about a Kindle that I want, that my Kobo doesn't do.

      • Nice.. i buy kobo color then

Its just like apple vs android…..

      • Which one is the apple?

        • +2

The closed source one; so Kindle.

      • +1

Huh? No… they are practically identical in terms of function and ease of use. Integration into public libraries is the only differentiating factor I can think of, and there are workarounds.

Whispersync on kindle is a pretty big differentiator imo

          • @ONEMariachi: I use a desktop regularly at home, so I find it no problem to hook up a device to a floating USB cable.

I'd honestly totally forgotten about Whispersync still existing, despite having several Kindles and Kobos at home.

My primary motivation for using Kobo is to not use an Amazon device.

            • @rumblytangara: I’m not sure what hooking up a usb cable has to do with whispersync?

Whispersync is a feature that syncs where you are up to on audible and syncs to your kindle. So you can seamlessly swap between physical reading and listening. It’s a massive time saver.

              • @ONEMariachi: Thought it was the cellular connectivity thing for when you buy a book from Amazon.

I don't listen to audiobooks at all.

    • With kobos you can borrow digital books from your library, not sure if you can do that with kindle.

    • I switched and have no regrets. Won’t be going back to kindle. Disclaimer though, my motivation was primarily to avoid giving any money to Jeff Bezos.

Kobo is where it's at if you wanna sail the high seas, arrr!

    • its easier then having to convert to files that amazon kindle accepts,

but kobo has libary intergration through OverDrive only.

      • +2

        Calibre does that so easily

    Waiting for Kobo Libra colour

  • I want something like a Kobo sage but with excellent writing support and battery life. I tried the scribe and it was amazing for writing but lacked features and felt too fragile to bring around as my daily notepad.

Does anyone know of something around 8 inches with good pen support?

    • +1

The Sage is just too expensive. If they priced it below $350, an extra inch over the Paperwhite would make sense to me. But at $430 it doesn't.

Please Kobo, release a Libra 3 (BW)

      • +2

That's part of my problem too.

Costing $430 AT DISCOUNT for a 3 year old device is a lot, especially considering other options in the market. I'd pay close to that for a Sage 2 but not this one

        • +1

Yes, and I've heard the battery leaves a bit to be desired. It just seems like an afterthought and an up-sell to offer a battery cover for the device.

Kobo is $219 on the JB Commercial Site

    • +1

Nice, although I went through from Westpac and it shows $233.39 for the Clara Colour for me, and can't use gift cards I think.

  • What's the quality of the colour like? What's the use case for colour?

    • Magazines, manga, comics etc

    • +1

If you just want to read black and white books apparently the colour kobo screen is worse than the black and white kobo.

    • +1

Not ready for prime time, at least for me. Screen looks 'dirty' when reading B&W content, and the colour resolution is half that of B&W.

I reckon by the third generation of the tech, eink corp will figure it out.

      • oh damn was looking at the kobo libra for primarily b&w books, guess ill just stick with the clara b&w

      • Are we on the second of first generation of colour e-ink tech now?

        • +1

Clara uses Kaleido 3, so 3rd gen. They've been around on smaller brands for a while now.

          • +2

            @shiznit: So I am mistaken!

To be fair, that's three generations between 2019 to 2023, so they are moving pretty quickly with their revisions.
I'd like to remain hopeful of significant advancements, but considering there is no competition (all e-ink sourced from one company which holds the patents), I'm sure they'll advance only incrementally.

            • +1

@heef: Thanks for this info, not sure why I was considering buying one without much research.

I've had 3 different B&W eBook devices but figured I should get a colour one for the magazine's I read.

Guess I'll wait and see what Gen 4 brings
