I assume this is the 4070 mobile not the full desktop version. They don’t even list the VRAM anywhere so I can’t tell for sure

    • Pretty dog, they don't list it on their official product page here either.

      • +4

        PDF lists:

        Nvidia® GeForce RTX™ 4070 Laptop GPU (Core Ultra 9)

        So it's probably between a desktop 4060 - 4060 Ti

        • +6

I hate that they use these naming conventions. If it is not a 4070, don't call it a 4070.

    • +5

yeh usual nvidia naming bulldust… posing a mobile gpu as the same tier as a desktop class..

  • +9

hmmms so basically a gaming laptop with a BYO display… i think i prefer an itx with desktop parts which should cost similar money.

    • +3

Yeah, that would definitely be better value with upgrade ability. Though you won’t be able to get it anywhere near as compact as this.

    • +5

This is for people who prefer the small form factor over performance.

Itx takes up too much space for people like me.

      • yeh i get it… and it's fair enough :) .. still pokes at my value for money bone

      • +1

Genuine question: what exactly is your use case where ~10 litres in size difference is make or break?

        • It’s personal preference, I can’t stand the sight of having a big pc tower sitting in my room.

Plus I only game casually and don’t need 4k 60fps for my games.

A tiny pc with a mobile version of rtx 4070 would have suited my needs if I need a new pc now

          • @Max999: You can get small ITX stuff. they don't have to be big towers. My ITX is smaller than an xbox.

    • +1

i think i prefer an itx with desktop parts which should cost similar money.

You can probably get an itx system that's ~50% faster for the same price

  • Although I really wish Asus would have continued Intels "Extreme" line, where you can put in your own GPU (I have the Beast Canyon), this actually looks like a really good deal otherwise.

I would probably prefer 32Gb over 16, but assuming I can swap that out.

    Nice find.

Yes, storage and ram are upgradable, this is usually sold as a barebone kit.

  • This looks like a pretty cool system for couchplay to get the best out of both console and PC gaming, especially if your tv stand area has limited space

Yes I'm aware it would be cheaper to build a full tower, but the premium your paying here is for the form factor.

Everybody wants a minipc, but very few want a $2K minipc. Ryzen 7 is enough for most people, I think $700 is the sweet spot at the moment for good performance, and for a cheapy people are getting N100.

    • Considering this a bargains forum, I thought that some people would want a ~$4k minipc for ~$2k.

    Absolutely killer deal…

    Really?

Compared to Jarrod's laptop deal, for $100+ less you got:

    • Faster i9-14900HX vs Core Ultra 9 185H
    • Double the DDR5 RAM
    • High res screen
    • Portability
    • Not having to deal with the famous ASUS warranty and support service
    • +2

Entirely different use case? Unfair comparison

      • +1

If you put the laptop on a rack, they are quite similar to me…

      • -1

Entirely different use case? Unfair comparison

They both have 330W power bricks

So which use cases do you see paying more for less on this ASUS NUC to be better than the Gigabyte laptop?

    • +2

This is definitely a great price point for this particular item compared to its RRP.

With that being said, I think the comparison to a laptop is fair and valid. I definitely considered a laptop before deciding on buying this unit. But for my use case, I don't care much for the portability, and I care a lot for the form factor. I believe that thermals would be considerably better for this unit than they would be for a laptop running constantly with its lid down.

This is definitely a great price point for this particular item compared to its RRP.

RRP means nothing for ASUS products - the ASUS tax, ROG tax and STRIX tax are the 3 most delusional brand taxes in PC hardware

I believe that thermals would be considerably better for this unit than they would be for a laptop running constantly with its lid down.

The dual fan + heatpipe + vapour chamber + venting config on the ASUS is no different to any $2K gaming notebook

        And yet:

Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 as tested by Jarrod
Worst case stress test + turbo/auto fan + lid closed = max CPU temp 88° C

        ROG NUC 970 Review Translated
"On the other hand, we must say that its cooling system keeps temperatures at bay as long as we do not tickle the processor in stress tests, where it reaches 100º C and causes thermal throttling."

        • +1

Thermal comparisons without counting clockspeed/performance in mind are useless.

Jarrod literally noted it down in his TUF vs Legion matchup video, where timestamped the tuf was warmer but it was always clocking out higher.

At the end of the day when the presets on the bios for different performance profiles across different machines across difference brands are wildly different it is unfair to pitch one directly against another without accounting for anything else.

It is ridiculous that you have such a hate boner for Asus but quoting jarrod at the same time while they have been making decent upgrades and consistently scoring on his end of year tierlist since 2022 onwards yet you dont seem to hold the same bias for Dell, Acer and Gigabyte which is only scoring lower across the board.

I just built an itx with 9800X3D and 4070 Ti Super at this price

    • do you have it on pcpartpicker? i need a similar build but out of touch on current components

      • +2

Stacked with cashback and TRS. CPU cooler, case and RAM were not from Australia.

        I've got
        9800X3D $799
        MSI B650i Edge WiFi $339 ($118 cashback)
        KC3000 2TB $149
        ROG Loki SFXL 850W $298 ($104 cb)
PNY Verto 4070 Ti Super $1141(3% off GC)
All parts above did TRS for further $255 off
        Parts below aren't from AU
        Phanteks Polar S5 $20
        Glowy 6800C32 2x16G(Newer Hynix A-die with ARGB) $130
Shiny Snake G300 mATX case $70

Did the math again, it actually is higher than I expected, approx. AU$2600

It seems like there's some misunderstanding here. This is the successor to Intel's gaming NUC lineup with a built-in GPU, starting with the Hades Canyon NUC. After Intel discontinued their NUC business, ASUS took over to continue the legacy.

While it’s true you can build an ITX system for less and with better specs, that’s beside the point. This is aimed at a niche audience and NUC enthusiasts.

Full specs of the GPU: RTX 4070 Mobile, 8GB VRAM, 130W TDP

Don't support Asus unless you really have to, they're a trash company
