My Moto G54, is forcing me to login to a Google account, no decline option.
I cannot send an SMS otherwise, but phoning ok though, after an update. Anyone else?

Me too. There's been an update to the default messages app. It allows for more functionality in the app.
Your best option is to use an alternative SMS messaging app.

I'm happy with Textra.
Not necessary. See zoob below.

1- Open Google Messages .
2- At the top right, tap your Profile picture and then Down arrow and then Use without an account .
When you use Google Messages without an account, you may not have access to features like Magic Compose, Device Pairing or Gemini. Your profile isn't shared with anyone, and you won't find other users' profiles.
Is this only for moto g series line
No, other android devices too.
Thanks saw below
Got it yesterday, pixel phone. Weird.
just change in the settings to use the original style messaging app, that happened with me when I upgraded my phone a few months back,
You can try installing an alternative SMS app.
SMS Organizer (made by Microsoft. No ads) (might be region locked to India?)
Chomp SMS (Contains ads)
and there are quite a few open source ones you can grab on F-Droid
If you go into the app and click on the person icon there is an option to use without an account which allows you to sign out.
…do you not have a google account?
The problem when merges like this happens is what it does to people in your contact list.
I had this issue before when Microsoft combined skype with Hotmail.
Suddenly i had gaming friends from MSN messenger on the same contact list as family and work colleagues. This made my work day a nightmare as i was getting messages about game related stuff with no way to filter it out.
Extremely unproductive and distracting. I learned from that experience. Fortunately theres an easy to opt out for this google case.
What's a Moto?
