as the reviews have not been favorable

Huh? This thing is the best handheld around. Excellent battery life. Great controls and ergonomics. Solid software and updates. Fixed all the issues of the first Ally.

Must be confusing the reviews for the original Ally.

for over $400 from the Steam Deck OLED?

      Nah

      • Maybe not X but Z1E is about the same price as 512gb Oled and its the one to pick imo. I had both Rog and SD for a while and ended up keeping the Rog. Its more capable and got a better screen.

      • Steam Deck is old hardware, struggles to run most new games these days.

    • can you share the unfavourable reviews pls

  • +5

    Reviews look good to me.

    • Yeah seems most YT reviews I watched all saying good things on Ally X, they just need to bring down the price to sell more …

ah pity not as good as the $772 price from amazon previously

This is the beefed up 'X' version of the Ally… dont think its ever sold under $1000

      • +1

my mistake, didnt realise there is 3 versions of the rog ally

        • -1

          There are only two.
The original white one and the upgraded X

            @FireRunner: Extreme, non-extreme and now X. So 3 in 2 generations. Aus didn't get the non-extreme version.

            • +1

@Blu2: Ah True, forgot about the non-extreme version.

    • User name checks out :p

The only thing wrong with the X is the price hahaha

Would rather a legion go, when it’s on sale around $8-900 tbh.

Otherwise wait for the next gen to get one at above 1-1.5k

Lunar Lake Claw is coming out soon as well.

Crazy the prices they have for these handhelds though.

  • the price is indeed unfavourable 1.4k is still high my steam deck is less than that just saying

  • Does it pair well with a 1080p or 4K monitor?
If I wanted to play some games which are more suited for keyboard+mouse?

    • +1

Yes, think of it like a tiny laptop, you can call it a palmtop

The Legion Go 8" is more suitable for a dock, as the screen can be detached and the controllers used wirelessly. It behaves like the Nintendo Switch, but bigger and slightly uglier (sic). There is a kickstand, and it does support 30W TDP for docked gaming / heavy battery use, it's not for everyone.

Both wireless controllers are detachable, one of the controllers can also act as a mouse/stick control as it has a optical sensor. There's video on how it works

i.e. it's quirky, but it can work at 800p/1080p and scale to 4k, but the TV needs HDMI Freesync support (LG, Samsung) to use VRR/Freesync. Some TV's need you go to into the settings to enable gaming mode/Freesync for that port. 60FPS is more stable for 25w/30w TDP content

While you can use a wireless controller to run games on your handheld… If you use the Ally X or Steam Deck, you need to attach a USB-C dock/hub for HDMI + power and also hold the device in your hand to play games.

Bluetooth keyboard & mouse will work without a dongle, a Dongle would need to connect with a USB-C dock to be used. If you have a 2.4ghz wireless gamepad controller or 2.4ghz headset that uses a dongle, you might need physical room on the Dock / Hub as they do get bulky.

  • Absolutely love mine

  • Buy this or I wait for MSI Claw 8?

    • I would wait… sales comes and goes. Better to buy once than to have regrets for not waiting.
