      • Not surprising, there were several reports mentioning that Shopback Supermaket VISA can not be used at Coles Online. This card is no difference at Coles online payment processor.

    • I suspect the MCC for Coles Online is the same as the MCC used for the Coles Group gift card portal (MCC 5399 - Miscellaneous General Merchandise Store), but someone would need to confirm this. As @Neoika has already pointed out, the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card also declined Coles Online transactions, so this is unfortunately nothing new.

Additionally, the Coles website says the accepted payment methods are credit cards, debit cards and PayPal. The gift cards from this deal are prepaid cards, so there is also a chance that Coles’ payment processor automatically rejects prepaid cards.

You could call Blackhawk Network and asked them whether they can see the reason your card was declined.

      • +1

Coles prepaid master card is accepted at Coles online, but vanilla visa card was declined, so could be either Coles or Card issuer problem.

  • Has anyone tried Groceries Gift Card in Coles stores to buy gift cards?

    • +2

      yes converted to EFTPOS cards.

      • Where can you use eftpos cards? Anywhere and online?

        • +1

eftpos-only gift cards (e.g. the ones from this deal) can only be redeemed in-person at any merchant that choose to accept prepaid eftpos gift cards as a payment method.

In other words, online payments are impossible for these gift cards.

          • @WookieMonster: Thank you, so perhaps good for shopping at Aldi to avoid the card fee. Would you know where to check the balance if the groceries gift card online? Tried here but no luck https://www.myprepaidcentre.com.au/home

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks. May I ask how can I know merchant will accept prepaid eftpos gift cards or not?

            • +3

@shoppinginsyd: You will only really find out when you try and swipe the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal, and see whether you get a reaction from the staff member or the EFTPOS terminal.

I find that prepaid eftpos gift cards are accepted by a lot of merchants, but there are some scenarios to be aware of:

              • Some merchants (e.g. unattended parking meters) will not accept eftpos at all. You will usually notice this if you see logos for other card networks (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, AMEX), but not eftpos.

              • Some merchants will use EFTPOS terminals where you cannot swipe a card at all. For example, if you go to a market and the stallholder is using a CommBank Smart Mini, you cannot use a physical prepaid eftpos gift card at all, because that card reader has no magstripe reader at all.

              • Merchants using Square EFTPOS terminals will not be able to process payments on the eftpos network if you swipe the card through the EFTPOS terminal. (This is due to Square choosing to only process payments on the eftpos network if you tap or insert the card.)

              • Some merchants have set up their EFTPOS terminals to automatically reject prepaid eftpos gift cards as a payment method for some or all purchases. For example, one restaurant I have been to has completely blocked them. Another example, Woolworths automatically rejects TCN eftpos gift cards if you try to use them as a payment method for some gift cards sold in their stores (e.g. Vanilla Mastercard gift card, Vanilla Visa gift card, Everyday WISH gift card). However, Woolworths will let you use a TCN eftpos gift card if you are paying for groceries or other types of gift cards.

              • Some merchants may stop you from using a prepaid eftpos gift card if they see you trying to use a prepaid eftpos gift card and they do not like that. This happened to me at a pub yesterday, plus it sometimes happens at Australia Post if you are trying to pay a bill (as examples).

I know these examples will probably scare you off prepaid eftpos gift cards, but I think they can be very useful in a lot of situations. For example, you can use them at ALDI and avoid the 0.5% surcharge.

              • @WookieMonster: You are simply the best :)

              • @WookieMonster: Awsome, professional and knowledgeable. You are the best.

Will ALDI accept split payment if want to use small amount of eftpos cards? Never tried before, so just wondering.

                • @shoppinginsyd: I only use ALDI self checkouts for groceries nowadays, and those cannot do split payments at all.

Whenever I have been through regular ALDI checkout, I have always been told the only kind of split payments allowed is cash first and then the remaining amount on one payment card. I have no idea if this has changed lately though.

                  • @WookieMonster: Grab a gift card. Buy the gift card first then pay with gift card and split the rest

      • Thanks, converted to eftpos gift cards as well.
