Unbelievably Slimy Optus Activation Process

I guess this is the last time I buy prepaid plans with Optus…

Upon trying to activate this $35 prepaid SIM on the online portal, I get the error, "The porting process for this number requires manual input. Please start a chat with us so we can sort this out."
So I hop on the chat and…

Optus Your account has been successfully created, kaimyu. Now that we have all the necessary information, we need to select a plan to activate your sim card immediately. We have a great offer for you as well. By choosing a subscription plan, you will receive a 25% discount, which will save you more money and provide better allowances in the long term. Here's the plan that you can avail kaimyu: $39 instead of $52 Small Optus Choice Plus Plan - 50GB data allowance and endless local calls and text $46.50 instead if $62 Medium Optus Choice Plus Plan - 180GB data allowance, endless local calls and text and endless international calls and text to 35 countries

You I would like to use the Optus Flex Plus $35/ 28day plan that I purchased

Optus With that kaimyu, it might take some time to activate. How about we refund that to you which will reflect within 3-5 days? Will that be okay? The plans that i've provided is monthly (30/31 days) and they are: - 5G capable - No lock in contract - Endless data feature

You How long will it take to activate?

Optus It will activate immediately.

You Then please continue to activate with the $35/28 day plan

Optus With that plan, it might take within 24 hours as it's prepaid but with the subscription plan, it will activate real time.

You 24 hours is okay. Please proceed

Optus No worries. Thanks for confirming kaimyu.
couple minutes later
Optus ID verification successful kaimyu. Activating sim card now and I have a good news, I have a colleague from prepaid which will help me activate the sim card real time so you don't need to wait within 24 hours :)

Optus Thank you so much for confirming kaimyu. You can now enjoy your service and I really appreciate your kindness and time. It was a leasure assisting you :)

Not happy Jan.

Read the title as "unbelievably slimy octopus activation"

I'd need to see it in ink before agreeing to it.

  • People don't realize that there's hidden cost to contact CS. I would avoid it where possible.

Sorry for being stuck it in my deal, but I don't normally need assistance for activation.

Yeah Optus Live Chat is notorious for wanting to upsell when you contact them about anything

    Anyone got the TL;DR version?

    • +4

Optus attempted to upsell OP to $52 plan instead of helping them activate $35 prepaid.

Would you like fries, sundae and another burger with that?

No, OK just the plain burger, move over to the waiting area for 24 hours.

Similar story upon attempting a port-in activation yesterday, they tried to upsell me to a postpaid plan. I wonder if requiring manual contact upon activation is random, so a lucky (many) get the wonderful experience of dealing with a crappy salesperson… scummy tactic.

  • That is really bad.

    Optus

I think I've found your problem.

  • My two most recent interactions with Optus
    1. Same issue as kaimu, tried to activate online as usual -nope got bumped to Postpaid CSO tried upsell I stopped her very quickly said sorry still dirty about you( Optus) not keeping my info safe ( hadn't been on Postpaid since maybe 2015 or so.
-Grr eventually got it activated that day.

Next activation was only a week or two ago
No bumping this time and happened quickly.

Would love to know how many " conversions they get)

CSO gave me the impression I should have gotten over the ID hack bullsh1t

  • This sort of bullshit should be illegal. Should have to ask "Besides the pre-paid service which I will activate immediately, would you like some brazen shilling while you wait for me to complete the task you already paid for?"

This whole porting process is extremely painful, I'd rather get kicked in the balls multiple times.

    • I'd rather get kicked in the balls multiple times.

I can arrange that for you, if you like 🤣

  • Never had. Problem oth my activation.

Only time they upselle was t inform me that a post paid service for 12 months was cheaper by $12 per month and data was way better…asi. Much more.

I ported today and also had this experience. Pretty poor, seems unnecessary given that every other provider I've ported to in the last 10+ years including many Optus MVNOs has been smooth and automatic.

I am activating one this morning and just got hit with the same

"The porting process for this number requires manual input. Please start a chat with us so we can sort this out."

Disgusting - I am tempted to just write off this $12 and go with an MVNOs

Decided to try and activate it anyway but holy HELL this is like pulling teeth.

As I was processing your account I can check you are associated with a 25% discount for next 12 months on your account, isn't that great?

Ugh its taking so long to get replies. Its been like 30 min so far and no closer to getting it activated.

EDIT: almost 1 hour so far. 8-10 minutes between replies.
