[VIC] $12 Trays of Strawberries (18 Punnets) @ Sacca's Fine Foods, Blackburn Square

570

Following on from great Saccas deal on mangoes recently:

Just popped down to the local Blackburn shops - Sacca's had $12 trays of strawberries - 18 punnets per tray. They are fresh and according to my teen they are omg tasty.
Not sure if it is a Sunday only deal, but there were plenty left when I bought mine at the end of the day today.

I'm not sure if they are Blackburn store only? If you are in the area, I recommend a visit.

YMMV - I bought from Saccas on Thursday, 8x500gr for $8 — sadly all of the strawberries on the bottom were soft/mush — still a decent deal

There's always a reason that fruit is discounted. Nobody gives away good fruit - usually it's overripe (underripe fruit can always be sold more easily).

      • It is good fruit, but yes it is very ripe and would need to be dealt with quickly. I ate a whole punnet and they were very tasty (not big crispy flavourless ones) :D

    • Funny… all the strawberries I buy in Australia are disgustingly crunchy. What I would give for an actual ripe mushy strawberry… (not rotten mush though :-D )

      • Grow your own
        .

      • They generally pick fruit slightly under-ripe, then let it ripen in storage. This is as opposed to stuff that ripens on the plant which tastes a lot better and has a softer texture.

        Mushy berries good for jamming

Hang on a sec; just heard Cole’s were selling them for $5/punnet - how can that be ??

    • The same reason ginger is $50/kg at Colesworth, but you can easily find it for $10/kg elsewhere. Convenience.

  • I got some on Tuesday at $8 for 4kg (8 punnets) and they're definitely not tasty. I would say okay for desserts or smoothies. At least only 1 or 2 are moldy after a few days sitting in the fridge

    • I have yet to find any strawberries in Australia that are sweet. They seem to grow them for looks and size rather than taste. They’re always tart.

  • Oh wow I didnt know there was a Sacca's in blackburn!

  • The non-tasty ones - they come up well in a dehydrator if you slice them thinly. Same as mangos.

  • Also available at Coburg store. Strawbs looked to be in excellent condition.
