    amazing price

lemme guess why… its the intel arc thing isnt it?

    • +11
      • +7

        $799-$899 usd is wild

        • I might get that to replace my desktop.

    • What is that? Some release about to make these obsolete?

      • +3

        https://www.msi.com/Handheld/Claw-8-AI-Plus-A2VMX

well i mean these will be over $1k and being Arc will always be a hard sell

$600 might be a good deal if you're into emulation and less than AAA gaming

      • No offence to anyone who gave one of these a go but these were obsolete as soon as they were released… A new version based on Lunar lake is going to be miles better. Driver support etc will still be an issue for Intel based GPUs.

        • -2

So what? they still work and for 600 bucks its a bargain.

          • +3

@Geeseman: I think not once you read reviews

          • +3

@Geeseman: Sure it's an ok price but the product wasn't good, if you want it as a indie games type console I'd rather steam deck, maybe it's ok for emulation but again I'd take the steam deck over this… Vs Z1 based hand held this thing is all over the place some games close.. Some nowhere near… It's something that the buyer needs to research well make sure is ok for games they want to play.

    • +2

New Lenovo Legion Go 2 due soon too

      • +1

yep Jan CES all the Z2 chip based hand helds will be released along with i'd say more Lunar lake stuff … but they'll be way more expensive than this so this is a good toy to play with for some of us who like to tinker .. :) i just don't have $600 lying around hehe

        • I thought Lunar only made CDs/DVDs/accessories, don't tell me they make GPUs now. Lol

          • +1

@sn809: Haha Intel isnt far off the way Lunar went with their products last few years.. But their mobile chips are pretty good… Lunar Lake is at least a better name than 258V with 140v graphics… Whatever TF that's meant to mean.

  • Can this play squad

    • Probably, on the lowest settings, but you'd struggle to play with handheld controls.

  • Really tempted by this price point… Anyone can make a guess how good this will be for competitive rocket league?

    • +7

I got mine the other day and have been playing it. I haven’t played rocket league on it yet, but to give you an idea, GTAV runs gets about 70fps at 1080p with medium/high settings. F1 23 low/medium at 1080p getting around 90-100fps. I’m sure rocket league would run well. The controller buttons are a little mushy feeling and not the best, would take time getting used to.

      • What’s the battery life like in your use case?

        • Not great TBH - an hour to an hour and a half. Few hours on battery mode playing low power games such as PokeMMO. I rarely play without the charger plugged in, as I use the Claw whilst laying/sitting on my bed.

My mate has the AllyX and it looks like battery on all handhelds are pretty crap.

      • Is this the only PC Handheld that has joystick and buttons rgb colour changing on the fly or can the others do that too?

I watch a video on the claw and the buttons where changing from blue to red to green while playing rather then sticking to one colour only

        • The rog ally handhelds do. You can customise it in its Armoury Crate software

          • @San4k4: Yer I’ve been keen on one but I just can’t bring myself to it as it has the SD card issue and the X is $$$

    • +1

Hard no. The input lag might be unprectable, screen size is puny and you may struggle to judge distances, and as you rank up you'd want bakkes mod etc on PC with log input lag controller and a 165hz and higher monitor.

      What rank r u?

      • Yea it wouldn't be my main machine, more just to play in bed or in transit to keep the muscle memory sharp. Any reason you wouldn't be able to install bakkes mod on this device though 🤔
        Don't judge, I'm Plat 3 (Diamond 1 on a good day)

        • +1

That would even be worse IMHO. Playing on two different devices with vastly different input lag etc would demote you. I only commented as you said competitive. IF it's just casual, no probs.

I suspect you will get worse mechanically if you kept switching constantly between two devices.

          Just my two cents.

btw I am also D1-D2 in 2s. I think 35% of player base is D.

          • @Naigrabzo: Thank you very much for the feedback
I already play on 3 diff devices (ultrawide PC, TV via XBOX, Nintendo Switch) but hate playing on the Switch because of the low refresh screen
In my head, any extra time on RL is better than none (have a kid) even if its not in teh same ideal conditions every time
I will continue thinking about this haha

            • @ericshurn: Dude I switched from the nintendo to PC and ranked up instantly. It just feels soooo much better.

I have a cheap hall effect wired controller from Amazon. Works well. Best of course is the PS4 controller that the pros use.

  • +2

It would make a nice hand held emulator up to ps3.

    • +2

I’ve been doing some Wii and DS emulation, so far, VERY solid!

      • +7

I mean, so would a decent phone and a Bluetooth controller though…

      • +1

Can it do Switch? this is why i am after a handheld, tbh.

      • +1

        This isn’t impressive tbh

  • Can I just treat this like a mini pc, with a dock then using a monitor use it as a PC? As least I can bring it with me as a 'portable' pc

Oh no, just checked reviews, pretty crappy and I bet all other retail shops will drop price soon too … HODL as usual!

    • +3

It should perform like a newish i5 laptop. I've seen 12400h mini pcs recently for under 500 though, might be more worth it

    • +1

Not pretty crappy but ugly or very crappy

  • When the ones with the new core Ultra 2 chips drop to this it will be a lot more interesting

  • +2

This would be a good PS Portal anlternative that lets you do some light PC gaming and emulation. Not bad for the price.

  • +1

Interested if it was the Ultra 7 for under $600. Just wanna play pc games that are not available on consoles along with emulation N64 PS2 etc so don’t really wanna pay over $1k for the new models plus wife said no!

And also playing Fortnite on it that looks way better then playing on Switch

  • Can anone recommend razo edge gaming tablet buying from amazon?

    • +1

No, android-based for the same price as this? Claw might be underpowered compared to AMD Z1 competitors, but it's still a lot better than the SD G3x and can actually play PC titles.

The Razer edge is ok if all you play is COD:M, genshin, etc.

  • -1

the reviews of this didn't suggested avoid.

    • +4

      What?

    • Because most reviews are 8 months old……

  • +1

    OG Steamdeck better

  • +2

USB-C Thunderbolt 4 apparently, could easily use this as a laptop replacement if you utilise USB-C docks everywhere

    • So this should be compatible with an egpu?

      • It is compatible yes.

      • Didn't even think of that…. Now that would be insane

  • +2

If you've got the $15 welcome voucher, free shipping or click and collect, and pay by direct deposit, the cost could be as low as $584. I'm pretty tempted to return my Centre Com $549 order (still on the way), but may not worthwhile considering the return cost (time, fuel, etc.).

If the new version is a ripper upgrade, it probably won't be as affordable as this one, even in the next Black Friday sales.

    • I only got offered a $10 welcome voucher!

      • $10 for a new email address and additional $5 for a new phone number

        • How do you get that to come up? Ah, just opened incognito.

  • +1

    Waiting for $500 :-)

    • +1

Yep, bet xmas this will go below $500

  • +2

    Cries in paid $1599

  • All the reviews I've seen are for the i7 version. It seems like it pretty much on par with steam deck in performance but with added power draw and less battery. Just wondering how the i5 version fares?

    • i5 is sometimes faster than the same i7

      • +1

Yeah but seems most reviewers still prefer AMD version perform better and for future maintenance

  • +4

Frankly the price is still high…imho a $499 will or lower for 512gb version will move stock. It just cant stand a chance against amd based ones. Moreover linux support blows on msi hardware and to date no distro can properly use this. And msi, like gigabyte, has a track record on completely giving up on their superseded products.

But on saying that it is still a better choice for emulation only device…easy choice over retroid/ayn/aya neo imho.

    • +1

But the weight compare to Retroid pocket 5. The reason I got Retroid pocket 5 is because my Steam Deck is too big and heavy!

      • Fair call. But like I just get slap those razer kishi things on my old reg magic phone with an amoled display…and is my insta on the go handheld. But must say RP5 seems decent for it's offering…just the analog stick mapping doesn't work for me.

  • Great price. But not sure I am going to use it as I got Steam Deck and Retroid pocket 5 coming!

  • how is this compare with the Lenovo one?

    • Legion Go has removable controllers if that's your thing. Screen is an extra inch (8") for the Legion. AMD Z1 Extreme in Legion performs better.

Note, new Legion Go S leaked, it's adopting a design more akin to the Claw/Ally, with controllers one piece with the screen body.

      • +1

thanks I just bought the last legion go from Lenovo

        • Lol I posted the deal you bought from 😅
I should have recognised your username.

  • +7

The Claw is less powerful/less power efficient than the AMD powered machines but the real advantage is that it is basically just an Intel powered Windows laptop in a gaming controller. Meaning any updates that come from Intel/Microsoft are directly installable without a need for a custom build like there is for the AMD machines, people have installed Windows 10 on it with no problems. Plus with TB4 you could possibly upgrade the GPU when you are docked.

If you are playing things on it that aren't the latest and greatest the experience can be great. I only use mine for Rocket League and it is a far better experience than the Switch when out and about.

Remember there are no bad products, just bad prices, and at $549 (I got from Centrecom) I think the value proposition is good.

    • I hate playing RL on the switch, what kind of FPS are you getting with it?

      • +1

Yer Fortnite on the switch with its toned down visuals etc is not great

$500ish for the Ultra 7 and ill get one for Fortnite, Emu and PC games not available on consoles and also to play the free games I get weekly on Epic & GOG as I don’t have a PC

        • I saw a video online that for some reason Ultra 5 sometimes performs similar/better than Ultra 7? or is that before all driver updates etc

          • +3

@ericshurn: Yeah, the Ultra 5 is actually outperforming the Ultra 7 in some games. Since this is a battery powered device with power and thermal constraints, the CPU and GPU are likely competing for power, so efficiency is the key.

            • @fastnet: I’d want it cheaper tho anyhow so I’m happy to wait

      • +2

MSI Claw settings: performance mode profile, not plugged in
RL settings: fullscreen (it seems windowed mode loses performance), no AA, everything high except motion blur off, free play

        1080p: ~105-110fps
        900p: ~125-130 fps
        720p: ~145-150fps

I find the UI a bit small in 1080p mode so have been using 720p which always sits above the 120hz that the display can do.

    • XeSS support is also significantly better

  • OOS now

    • of coz, even their ebay site only got 2 left !!! Dont think they got that many stock at all
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/226268684490?_skw=msi+claw&itmme…

Will wait for other retailers to drop their once the 8 series is out

      • Nah still showing available for me and free shipping. Possibly oos before.

        • Yeah bet MSI must have sh\t load of these they want to get rid of before the next 8 ai+ arriving, but when I checkout reddit, the word 'stuttering' popping up a lot on this thing, I would say don't waste your cash now, not till this go below $500 (or include that free bonus accessory kit), otherwise we might see 'Cries in paid $599' just like someone above lol …

  • Delivery isn't included in the price. Free for pickup.

  • -6

I got the Odin Pro for $225 delivered with a screen protector and case. That would have been a better deal than that, or even the Odin 2.

    • +1

Comparing an Android ARM gaming handheld to a windows x86 one? Right…

      • -5

No, it's the complete experience, not architecture, to which I'm comparing. I know, difficult to comprehend.

        • +1

These serve different consumers. The android ones are for android games, plus emulation.

The windows/Linux handhelds play PC games, plus emulation, plus whatever desktop applications you need.

The complete experience(s) are different and serve different purposes.

          • -3

@heef: Yes, the MSI Claw has its merits for specific use cases like PC-first gaming, but you keep missing the point.

The Odin Pro provides a more versatile experience for its price. It does Android gaming, retro emulation, streaming PC games, Win 11, & since it's an ARM device. It's like a cheaper Steam Deck for PC gaming.

The Claw might be better for those wanting desktop-level performance, but for someone focused on gaming across multiple platforms, there's a more balanced and complete experience. Better ergonomics, triple the battery life etc, IN COMPARISON to the price. But, the power is capped hence the price difference.

Let's not pretend people are using these as a PC. It's literal use case is gaming.

            • -1

@RocketSwitch: I'd love for you to be right, but let's not pretend that Windows on ARM is ready for gaming. It's not. By the time it is, there will be much better hardware for the task than what's in the Odin Pro, which is a nearly 3yr old system.

        • +2

Yes, it difficult to comprehend. Mainly because I have different usage purpose in mind that is different then your.

I am looking at the Msi claw as a home pc usage first with a usb c hub due to the current price point for latest cpu gen. With it portability, it open other secondary usage.

I am having difficulty with seeing Odin being a better complete experience for me.

          • -1

@User7699: So you want to set a gaming handheld like a LAPTOP—with a USB-C hub and other peripherals—so destroying the fact it's supposed to be portable, you're making it less portable and more of a semi-stationary device. That defeats the purpose of a handheld, especially if you're looking for convenience and on-the-go gaming. Why do that to yourself? It's not a laptop and you won't get a seamless laptop experience. The effort required to do that is why devices exist for their purpose. A laptop is plug-and-play. This, you need a dock, get a monitor, get your keyboard, get your mouse, plug in the charger, get the cables… what a mess! Just get a LAPTOP!

Ah, so difficult to see my point, AH the pain of seeing my point.

            • -1

@RocketSwitch: Dude, ever thought about letting people enjoy the versatility of a product? Something portable doesn't have to always be portable. No need to gatekeep functionality because it doesn't make sense to you

              • @heef: All the best to them. The frustrations start when people don't use these devices as they should. The opinion is about not being a gatekeeper, but check other options that would suit their needs better being primary in the gaming handheld arena.

That's all it was, but you guys seem to think that because the niche case prevails here that my opinion doesn't apply, and it will work for that one person. In fact, you had the entire gaming handheld community ripping it to shreds. My opinion was to say there is a better alternative for the price for handheld gaming and to really consider if this is for you.

            • +1

@RocketSwitch: Please consider price. Find me a laptop/mini pc with a 135h cpu and 16gb ddr5 ram and 1tb for same price point.

Do you think I don't have anything and need to buy everything to work with the Msi claw?

The Msi claw only have 1 usb c for data and power. To use it as a home pc, there is just 1 cord that is needed to be connected, usb c hub to Msi claw. The USB C hub can connect to everything in a neat manner. Don't see where the mess is.

You have a hyper mad scientist creative way seeing thing or maybe you consider a desktop PC is too messy due to all the cords? Maybe you like to box every device for it sole purpose… a running shoe can't be uses as a casual shoe?

At this point I really can't see your point unless there is something more personal you aren't saying.
