One Planet Cross Track Shoes $55 (Was $199) Delivered @ One Planet

450

Bargain price for over-engineered mostly synthetic shoes (made in China) from One Planet. Great local brand, hope they can stay in business. These were on sale for $149 for a fair while. Bought a pair at that price & happy with them.

Current sizes available for the Cross Track are EUR37-42 & EUR47.
From memory, I think One Planet may have dropped their normal free shipping threshold for this deal.

edit - removed reference to the Cobbler boots as they are still available.

how are they a great local company with manufacturing in China

    • They still do some manufacturing here and do repairs locally.

    • +15

Making them in Australia would cost more than making them in Italy where the best are made. At least designing them in Australia for sale only through an Australian company and shops keeps some money here that otherwise would go straight to China or to an international conglomerate.
One Planet manufactures the vast majority of its products in Australia.

      • -3

Italy are B tier at high quality footwear at best.

        • +2

Italian footwear is easily top tier.

You have to spend some money for that level though.

          • @imurgod: What manufacturer's are we talking here?

            • @japes: There are many. Bontoni, Zegna, Ferragamo, etc.
Even 124 Shoes (in Melbourne but Italian shoemakers) are amazing.

              • @imurgod: All average quality but massively overpriced.

Enzo Bonafe is up there, sure.

                • @japes: I've had great experience with all of them.

What quality issues do you find with them?

                  • @imurgod: They're fashion brands, and whilst they do ooze style and are decently constructed (mostly welted, but often to a price point), they just arent top tier in the footwear game.

                    • @japes: The construction varies. I have a fair few and they differ in construction but I can say that I've had no issues and they are comfortable as anytning I've worn.

Do you recommend any brands that I should look at?

                      • @imurgod: Completely depends on what you're after and what you want to spend. Like it's very hard to go past Italy for sleek lasts/loafers.

I'm more into boots around that $500-600 mark and a bit past it.

                        • @japes: Wait, weren't you saying Italian shoes are tier B at best? I'm confused.

Anyway, any particular brands you recommend?

                          • @imurgod: As far as proper high quality shoes go I'll stand by that comment. Again, entirely depends on style and pricepoint.

I love my Vibergs, Grant Stone's, Parkhurst's and even Thomas George Collection (Australian brand, manufactured in Vietnam by Fugashin Shoemaker but I think they're done), and don't mind a pair of RM's too, but these are mostly Service Boots/Chelseas so as far as a sleek loafer goes theyre not really comparable.

Is guess I'd recommend Carmina for affordable high quality footwear with sleek lasts? Not really my wheelhouse.

                            • @japes: Hmmm you'll never convince me that Vietnamese craftsmanship will hold a candle to Italian craftsmanship but I haven't tried them so can't really comment.

Chelsea boots are not fashionable and everyone has RMs, which I have, are comfy and well made but, let's face it, ugly.

I do prefer stylish shoes so that's a factor for me and Carmona make very nice shoes in my price range too. Thanks for the tip.

Take a look at 124 Shoes next time, I think you'd like them.

Then again, I have so many shoes, I feel like Imelda! Ha ha

                              • @imurgod: Fugashin don't exactly make RTW footwear, and you might be surprised by the quality coming out of SEA, including Indonesia (eg. Onderhound). Better than Ferregamo's (who produce some absolute garbage, despite the history), that's for sure.

      • As much as I like One Planet, they have shifted production of most of the gear to Asia. The core range of backpacks are made here, but the tents & sleeping bags are asia. This wasn't always the case back in their early days. Having said that, unlike brands like Rivers, One Planet do seem to spec their asia products higher than anyone else. The build quality of the shoes is rugged & solid, but they are also very synthetic in looks & feel.

      • italian shoes / walking boots etc are long and skinny. Awesomely made serious walking boots, but they're all too tight for me. The boots made for the asian market are much wider in the toe box.

      • I’ve heard Italian factories are now full of Chinese immigrants

      Designed in Straya

      Made in Chayyyyyynaaa

      • +3

I think the most complex and expensive part of this shoe are the Vibram soles (designed in Italy, most likely made in China).
Unfortunately, "Designed in Straya" probably means that they just mixed and matched various options from an alibaba catalog.

        • +3

Going through the alibaba manufacturer and product lists must be what the PR department would describe as the local "R&D" 😆

    • +2

Majority of their other product is made locally.

This and several other low cost items are made in China. They are white label products, a generic item from a mega factory with a local brand glued onto the side.

      • Oh dear

      • They're not white label and not generic. One planet designed them and then got a factory to make them.

    • -2

Thank successive governments over the last fifty years for selling the country out to the globalists.

At least One Planet are still trying to do the right thing by making some of their product here. And the products they do make overseas seem to be decently spec'd & made.

Also women's version Freda at $55 - only size 37 left

  • +2

    Thanks OP
I have had my one planet sleeping bag for years and its been through a lot.

$55 for standard hiking books are a pretty good price let alone one planet ones

  • +5

    Of course there's no size 15 / EU50+

    • +6

Wouldn’t be a shoe post without your “no size 15” comment 🥲

    • +6

There's no chance I'm taking a punt on a pair of shoes fitting if there's no return option.

  • -1

Plastic shoes. No thanks. Let China keep them

Why do people often complain about Chinese-made products when local alternatives would cost up to five times more? While some Chinese products may have quality issues, many are just as good as locally made goods, but far cheaper due to lower manufacturing costs in China.

The real issue we should be concerned about is the significant price markup by local businesses, who often charge 50-200% more for Chinese made products to make profit and sustain labor around the business and overhead costs. This creates frustration when consumers feel they’re being overcharged, especially when similar products can be imported at a fraction of the price.

What’s hard to understand is why there's so much criticism towards Chinese-made items. The hostility seems disproportionate, especially when many global brands rely on Chinese factories for production. The focus should be on product quality and value, not just its origin.

    • +8

Why do people often complain about Chinese-made

Same reason they complain about Amazon and how people should support local shop but comes Amazon black Friday sales…🙄

I guess it makes them feel good like sending thoughts and prayers.

    • Only costs more because no one does it.

China manufacturing isnt what it used to be rouce wise. Still cheap, but a factory here could do it. And if enough did it, price wojld come down.

Not too dissimilar to if we actually user our iron ore instead of selling it for nothing to the chinese then buying it back as goods for 100x the price, and calling them polluters as a cherry on the aussie meringue

    • -5

I think you answered your own question!! Companies manufacture in countries like China because it's cheap and crap. All to save money and company profits.

    • +8

Because people are ignorant and racists.

    • -1

Because China has basically 0 quality control you may get great quality one day then absolute crap the next. it's just not in their culture to make stuff properly everything is rush rush quantity over quality. Hopefully that changes butt is not there yet

      • That's a huge general statement. China is massive and has manufacturing facilities all over the spectrum. Do you thing apple has 0 quality control????

  • -1

No return option if the shoes don't fit?

  • I can't really tell if these are slip ons or if the laces are actually real. They look nice anyway.

  • +4

No 43-45, so saved from buying more shoes, praise the Invisible Pink Unicorn, bless her holy hooves.

  • What's the use case of this shoes.? Where would you use it?

    • +1

I just use it as a normal casual everyday shoe, worn with jeans usually. Nothing special.

    • +2

Supposedly it comfortably crosses from town tracks to winding trails

  • +1

Im just getting croc slipper vibes.

    • +1

      Yes, very ugly shoes

    • i think you mean skechers

  • Never worn these shoes, but the pictures don't look comfortable for my fat feet (wide toe area)

  • Too bad they don't have size US 8.. seems like a good bargain

  • +1

They won't go out of buisness anytime soon. They're too large in the outdoor ed scene and infact in that side of the buisness they're growing. Their shoes are on clearance because they pretty average and they don't sell enough to make it worth their while especially since their consumer products make such a small percentage of their total profit. They're narrow in the forfoot and wide in the heal. For that price though, their pretty awesome.

  • are these good for trail running etc? vibram sole is interesting collab

    • +1

No. Far too heavy for trail runners.

      • thanks mate !

  • I've been advised that they are refunding me after running out of stock. I jumped on this fairly early so that is disappointing to hear. Has anyone else received theirs?
