Just ordered a Bafang for our sons ebike. Not sure if similar but that was $85 USD. DPC010 Ali

    • That's not a GPS bike computer, is it?

    • +2

Not at all similar. The Bolt has GPS and maps, and does not talk to you ebike battery/motor.

  • The new wahoo Ace has been released! No wonder these are dropping in price.

Just looked it up, $1000RRP! yikes!

Except for one important factor - it kills your phone's battery life.

      • -3

I think modern phones can be recharged.

      • -3

only if you have a sh$tty phone

        • Haters gonna hate…

          • -4

@tessel: if you hate saving money then you must have a pole firmly planted up your backside. Because phone mount does just as good or better than this 300 item listed..

            • @kungfuman: Mate, I totally agree. Check my post above. Bro, you ok?

    • +3

In some circumstances this is entirely suitable but in many others, a dedicated head unit is by far the best choice.

    • +4

Asking a serious question here; what are the advantages of having a dedicated bike computer versus using Strava, etc on the phone? I’m relatively new to cycling and would be happy to invest the money if there is a good advantage.

      • +3

If you're just starting out, probably none. But as a quick example, if you are riding on the road you can have GPS and routes set up when riding unfamiliar areas, Strava segments and power meter data all on one easy to read screen, with all day battery life. They also integrate better with other devices such as radars (e.g. Garmin Varia), and if you do end up falling in to it as a real hobby/fitness activity then training plans to follow as well. Longer climbs, you can have all the data about how long the climb is and what's coming up to measure your efforts.

Also - if you do have a little spill or crash, head units are far more sturdy (broadly speaking) than a mobile phone - and much cheaper to replace (again, broadly speaking).

Don't get me wrong, head units are a niche product, however the sort of cycling that really benefits from a modern head unit is also relatively niche.

mostly due to ability to connect various sensors. HRM, power, speed, cadence, tyre pressure and possibly other.

whenever mobile phone would suit many, that is a handy great device purposefully designed and built.

ditto what above users have said. Also one big consideration is heat management. Your phone will burn in the sun and might malfunction. A bike computer will not. And for sunny days, unless you are prepared to keep your phone on max brightness which will drain your phone battery in an hour or two, it will be very hard to see past the glare and reflection of your phone mounted flat on your handlebar.

I’ve gone through the journey of switching from head unit to my phone.

      1. Vibration damage on the phone camera. You need a decent mount that has vibration dampener but even with that there is still a risk of damage on the camera

      2. Battery life. I do 3 hours road bike or 45 mins commute ride. The phone battery is just not cut out for this.

      3. App integration. GPS is not an issue, but when it comes to heart rate, cadence sensor, light integration, power meter, etc. the head unit fits in much better.

I still use the quad lock + phone for my commute ride. But for the road bike, head unit does a much better job.

    • Lol phone.. no idea and bad advice.

May be ok for a person going for a very occasional ride. Like everyone else said would kill your battery in no time and only useful for a basic Strava or google maps display.

$327 is a bargain for these head units, used to be $400. I've got the edge 840 cheap on eBay a few years ago and also recommend that.

It's ok though, some people are just tight nothing wrong with that but don't need to justify it and say using phone is better.

Isn't this the usual price from 99Bikes? It's on a perpetual 15% discount, much like the Roam with a 20% discount.

  • It's been permanently $329 at Pushys. If you feel $2 discount is a deal, then it's a deal.

Let me know when it's under $300

    • Seems like the lowest on here still, you could check camels. eBay plus with a good 22% voucher is usually the cheapest but $327 is a good deal considering you can walk in and grab it from a LBS.

Otherwise just get a cheap Bryton 330 or something if you don't need the best.

  • PB with Ccache => $305
Pay with the recent 15% off TCN Active cards => $259
Travel overseas and claim TRS => $231

    • Where are the discount gc?

    • Lol how much will it cost to travel overseas.
