[NSW, Refurb] Apple iMac 2017 21.5" 4K Retina, 8GB, 240GB SSD, 2GB Radeon Pro 555 Graphics $300 Dee Why Pickup @ DY Computers

1260

Hi Everyone,

We have a handful of these iMacs that we'd like to clear out. Great units for a variety of purposes, and not as massive as the 27".
They are limited to Ventura OS, expect that you'll have about 1 year of updates remaining.

Refurbishment Process:

Brand New 2.5" SSD
Internal Dust/Blow Out
Re-Adhesive Strip Screen (Well because you have to, but might as well add another point so it seems like we did more)

We also have 500GB ($350) and 1TB ($420) Variants available:

500GB: https://www.dycomputer.com.au/products/2017-imac-21-5-intel-…
1TB: https://www.dycomputer.com.au/products/2017-imac-21-5-intel-…

Dee Why, NSW - Apologies to those interstate or too far to drive into store, but these are a pain and risky to ship.

Cheers,
Justin.

upvote for the honesty in the description haha

      agree, thumbs up!!!

  • 8GB?

    • That could be upgraded while “in there” I would presume.

      • +1

Like the 5K equivalent this model does have socketed RAM but unlike the 5K model there isn't a door to access the sockets, so accessing the sockets is a much more involved process.

        • Correct. But it could be done, potentially, when they are being refurbed. I know it's a board out scenario (I've done it) but it is possible.

          • +2

@Orrelljet: Sure it could be done but I wouldn't presume they can as it may not be economical or logistically possible.

            • @atj: Yeah I know. It's ok to dream though, right?

  • Can these run Windows with bootcamp?

  • That is an i5-7360U . Only dual-core, but not too shabby.

    • +6

It should be the i5-7400 quad core I think.

      • +3

Ah yes, faster processor on the 4K screen version. Nice.
Would help if OP posted the model code.

  • Guessing none of these came with a Fusion Drive? Asking as that would mean they have the pcie slot.

    • Nope, I believe the Fusion Drives came with the 3.4GHz variant with the 4GB VRAM.

      • Fusion drive was an option for this one too, as was pure SSD.

          Ooh noice

great fashionable unit for those wanting to dip their toes into appleos / for oldies to check their email and look at dog photos

    • +10

is this one compatible with cat photos?

      • +7

        have you asked the cat?

      • +3

        Apple says that’s a $100 upgrade

        • When I asked they said I had to return the entire unit, pay $1200 more and get a new one

    • +1

      Probably more Claris the dogcow.

  • Still love my 2017 MacBook Air. Battery as good as the day I got it. But I can't update Chrome on this current OS. Starting to find some websites are "iffy". So need to do do an update. Hesitant as it has been flawless for so long.

Anyone know the "newest" OS I can take it to? It's a 1.8ghz i5/ Intel HD 6000

Still rocking Mojave!! As the SSD is only 120gb.

    • Should be good to go up to Monterey.

      • Cheers Op. Can I do a direct update to Monterey?

        • Open App Store or system preferences and it should offer the update.

    • +10

Also take a look at OpenCore Legacy Patcher to run even newer versions.
      Edit: see axyh comment below.

        This is what I came for…. +

  • Eligible for apple AI since this has 8gb ram

    • +2

Yeah but i5 intel chip with no ML.

  • +12

With OCLP, these can be upgraded all the way to macOS 15 Sequoia.

    https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

My 2012 Mac mini is happily running macOS 14 Sonoma (I like to stay one version behind to be on the safe side), and has been running OCLP for years without incident.

I have to re-apply the OCLP video patches occasionally after major updates to make things snappy (no hassle - the OCLP application usually prompts me automatically), but otherwise it behaves like a supported Mac. The model in this deal has native video support under OCLP, so you probably wouldn't even need to worry about those patches.

    • Nothing like this for the phones? My olds are looking at updating their iphone (something to do with update compatability).
Seems rediculous paying $$$ when all they do is call, text, photo, and use basic apps (ie weather app)..

      • Nope, locked down bootloaders. Macs are fortunately still unlocked (OS encryption optional) so you can install other OSes, even on the new Apple Silicon (drivers are another story).

    • whats the performance like with mOS14?

      • +1

If anything, my Mac mini (2012, 2.3GHz i7, 16GB RAM, upgraded to SATA SSD) is faster than it's ever been.

There seems no slowdown with new macOS releases. In fact, the newer releases actually seem faster on the same hardware.

        • Nice, I'm thinking about grabbing one of these for my elderly parents for streaming & email use - since their more familiar with Apple stuff.

    • How safe is it to run the OCLP? My 2015 Macbook Pro 13" can only run Montorey and I haven't done the OCLP method. I am not sure how safe it is.

      • It disables a few security measures around unsigned executables… this is necessary for what it does, since it's adding a compatibility layer.

There's no risk to your hardware, and you can always do a system restore if it all goes wrong. Provided you have backups, and are aware of the security limitations (still much better than running an out-of-date OS), then it's low-risk.

  • I got a 2020 i7 , will it stop updating soon?

  • Any chance for memory upgrade options?

  • +1

Honestly not a good deal - take a look at the new Mac mini's with the M4 chips in them.

    • +2

This seems like an OK deal, but since I’ve got spare monitors around, I think the recently released M4 mini is the deal to go for.

    • +1

yeh 800 is crazy but i just cant get used to mac os it drives me insane, how we cant have a system of equal value in windows.. that thing is stronger performer than the top of the line intel/ryzen processors in single core and same in multi core

      • I'm hoping Asahi Linux becomes feature-complete, then I'll buy one discounted. Also, a French group of developers/engineers reverse engineered the storage modules, so upgrades will soon be possible for a lot less than Apple's default storage tiers.

Refurb means not second hand or used?

    • +5

      That's exactly what it means.

      • I called the store, and they mentioned it is used by a company. So its a USED device

        • +2

Yes, a refurb is a used device.

        • +1

          refurbished

adjective [ before noun ] formal

made to look new again by work such as painting, repairing, and cleaning:

"The newly refurbished property is across the street from the beach."
"The company offers refurbished machines with limited warranties."

          • @Droz: Perfectly correct, but seldom hear properties being referred to as refurbished, usually renovated.

I guess refurbished properties are more about aesthetic, where renovated is more extensive including structural changes.

        • +1

May be you are confused with Factory Seconds, which is new but with imperfections.

Refurbished is used, can be refreshed or repaired to improve products' value.

Used/Second Hand is product sold as is.

        • +1

Last century, "refurbished" used to mean "cleaned up to like-new appearance, with any worn parts replaced".

Manufacturers or service agents used to refurbish used items (e.g. replaced warranty returns) by fixing any issues, replacing any parts that were scuffed or broken, then they would sell them as "refurbished items", usually with a warranty. Third-party refurbishers would do a similar thing, replacing the screen or chassis if it was worn, and replacing batteries if necessary.

Then at some point (around 15-20 years ago), sellers decided they could get away with calling any and all used products "refurbished". It's the norm now, but it's not really correct. For an item to really be "refurbished", it needs more than a wipe-over, it needs to be thoroughly tested and have worn, damaged or visibly scuffed parts replaced.

But I guess language changes. Even if in this case, the change seems a bit scammy, because in an English-language sense, "refurbished" has a definite meaning.

          • @axyh: Manufacturer certified refurbishment is usually of higher standards, i.e. new batteries and consumable parts. They are usually returns.

            • +1

@browser: But this used to be what all "refurbishment" meant up until around 15 years ago (manufacturer or not). If it wasn't cleaned up, with worn parts replaced, it was just called "used".

Then sellers worked out they could get away with calling used items "refurbished", and the word has now lost all meaning.

seriously what can i use this for? good for as a Point of sale system for shops?

    • 4k streaming?

    • Yes, that is a fantastic use case. I sold a 2015 model for $450 to a shop 2 yrs ago for the same purpose, so this is an excellent price.

  • Decent prive for a 7 year old

2017 and won't run the latest OS. That's apple designed obsolescence for you.

    • +10

A lot of 2017 PCs won't run Windows 11 either.

      • +1

For example, most of them won’t.
