Car Hit in Coles Carpark

No dashcam footage (should've added the hardwire kit).

Whatever hit the car left a brownish gray film that actually peels off and the damage isn't that bad. Underneath the bumper there are tiny traces of yellow paint that may or may not be related.

She said she had to pop the bumper back in to place

Not sure if it's worth contacting Coles, happened around lunch time today.

Edited: NB, I wasn't there when this incident occured, Mrs was shopping in Coles, I was at work many suburbs away.

Pictures of location (from Google maps), blue arrow shows where Mrs parked.

Mrs tells me, and I can confirm, her car was moved about 1m back somehow when she returned.

She did not hit anything, something definitely hit her car and moved it back 1m.

That will literally buff right out.

  • Post a video (with sound) of the car being parked, so we have some kind of evidence that the handbrake was engaged, unless it has an electronic park brake.

Although we still haven't got convincing evidence that the car was moved in the car park.

    • "evidence that the handbrake was engaged"
What? Don't you hold the button in to engage the brake?

99% just rip the thing up based on my experience.

      • Yes, when I had a car with a handbrake I'd hold the button. But whichever way you do it, the action is usually not completely silent.

Just looking for some some way to rule out a disengaged parkbrake in this mystery.

      • Don’t Mercs have the handbrake as a foot pedal?

    Vehicle trolley collector!

The rear of their trailers is very low, and very yellow.
And your Mrs has parked next to a trolley collection point.
The rough grated scratch marks on the bottom of the spoiler would line up with the checkered metal ramp for the trolley.

My bet is one of those morons has backed the trailer up to your Mrs car, and knocked in back.

Go do some detective work on the same day of the week the Mrs parked there, watch how they operate, and take some photos of their collection vehicle and trailer.

Then, if things add up as suspected, hit up the supermarket (who employ the trolley collector!) and show them the evidence.

Can I ask if the vehicle is manual or auto? If manual and Mrs doesn't normally put it in gear (just handbrake), it wouldn't take much to move a car 1m if handbrake not fully ratcheted up.

Unless the Mrs has been excited to see a vacant spot so close to the shops and has come in too fast not realising there was a protruding trailer extending from the other car park in front? The car has definitely been struck by something low and yellow, and made of metal. Those grated lines under the spoiler haven't come from a colliding plastic bumper. Metal on plastic and has grated it… well, like a cheese grater.

I'm willing to bet the yellow scrapes are unrelated. They look like typical scrapes from yellow painted square gutters or the cement things at the end of a parking space. I see them all the time.

      • Me too. On the corner of my car bumper :(

If you're able to lick the bumper in the area where you were hit, and it doesn't taste like a kangaroo, then there's a 90% chance it wasn't a kangaroo.

I hope this helps with your investigation.

  • i dont get the before & after

Same. You should compare the dashcam footage before car was turned off and after it was started again. My money is on the Coles red rover.
Looks like it was reversed into your car on an angle and it bounced a few times before managing to get past and scrape the side.

  • Send samples of the paint chips to Scotty. The OXB crime lab can tell the make based on manufacture database of layer composition.

I believe scotty is now outsourcing that service due to being swamped with requests.

I still don't get why people post this crap on a bargain website.
