Different models - Standard vs ANC.

      • -1

Thanks - not an Apple Person :)

        • -1

          Not relevant

  • +1

Macapp has some negative feedback on ebay that suggests airpods were "fake" or faulty for some buyers.
Largely positive otherwise, so buy at own risk I guess.

    • +1

It's so hard to tell the difference these days tbh.

      • +2

Exactly… it's why I only buy airpods from legit storefront businesses (although there's probably still a small risk that fakes have worked their way into the supply chain).
I've bought known fakes before and was amazed at how hard it was to spot the difference (I couldn't !!)… so I wonder if ebay will side with buyers, just because they "think" their purchased item is fake.

        • Can check with serial number or take to an Apple Store, possibly the only way? I’m not 100% sure

        • -1

Can you find out the supplier? If they are that good why would i bother paying for these?

      • +4

If you can’t tell, doesn’t that illustrate that its not worth buying the real ones?

        • +1

If you own the real ones and someone gives you a knock off, you'll notice unless your ears are damaged or stupid. The ones who wont notice if its a knock off are those who dont own one already. Which can be said for any item.

          • +1

@vlahka: You’ve touched on a psychological theory that we habituate to what we have, and the concept of “ignorance is bliss”. There are people in this world who love their pre-ground coffee, the sound from the built-in speakers on their tv, and their cheap fake airpods. I am jealous of these people.

On the flipside, i still drive a 20yo corolla. I’ve watched a shopping trolley careen into it at a car park and did not care one bit. Such a satisfying feeling of freedom. That’s enough philosophy for today though…

            • @eggboi: I envy those people too. I used to be the guy who would buy a $40 headset and think it was great. One day my friend cursed me by letting me try his $600 sennhieser audiophile headphones. I thought it sounded great but couldnt understand why it cost so much. Went home and tried to use my headset and suddenly I heard every flaw. I've been cursed ever since to buy things with obvious quality. Whether its audio or visual, if I see or hear something not right it plagues me till I upgrade. A wretched existence. Mind you I have the same with as you do with the car. Some stupid cow hit me from behind while I was reversing out of a supermarket parking spot, she was going the wrong way and too fast. Scratched across half my back bumper. I looked at it and decided I'd live with it. However my insurance had to pay her out because even though she was doing 2 wrong things, I was automatically at fault because road laws say if you are reversing its your fault. Her car was a work rental so she wasnt even paying attention to my slow reversing car.

              • @vlahka: That's all fine and all, but the airpods don't actually sound all that great or even better than most brands. Only reason i but them is because they are 'good' and aren't an in ear design.

If i could confidently buy cheap knockoffs that are still good, I'd grab them over these frankly insulting priced semi-garbage devices.

.. any recommendation for some good open-back headphones though?

                • @Salmando: I actually agree that they dont sound amazing. They sound great, but I would expect a little more for the price. The design is lso the main reason I buy them as I absolutely hate the silicon tipped garbage. I dont have slutcanals for ears so they're always uncomfortable. Recommending headphones is always tricky since everyones preferences are different. I definitely prefer the open back ones though.

Now my memory is pretty garbagwe but I think my first proper headphones were the Sennheiser 590's. They were closed. They were pretty amazing for movies. One day the cable got stupid so after much research I grabbed my current pair, the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700. I'll tell you the clarity on this thing is great, the soundstage is stupidly amazing to the point where if someone knocked on a door during a movie I was watching, I'd actually turn and look at my door or window, since it sounded that immersive. They're also amazingly comfortable to wear and light. Plus they're not that expensive at all. Only downside the bass is a bit light. I've seen its been replaced with the 700X but the 900X has a bit more base and quality, but you might need an amp to run it for full effect. The better you go, the more power you'll need etc. I'm told the sennheiser 560 is comparable, some say slightly better and with more bass. But the sennheiser 6xx headphones are supposed to be even better wiht similar soundstage and clarity but more bass, but ?I cant vouch for it as I havent used it personally. Maybe when I have spare money some day I'll grab it for fun.

Now if you're after something to use at the pc I'd absolutely recommend the 'Drop + EPOS PC38X' gaming headset. Excellent sound and amazing microphone, successor to the sennheiser Game One headset. I've used quite a few headsets and most have bugged me in one way or another. I love these things though. Only negative would be the cable isnt ridiculously long like the the previous Game One headset. I liked the length so I got an extension cable. It's still long but the one before let me walk prefer far, like to look out my window etc. Just preference stuff.

                  • @vlahka: Great feedback thanks. I listen to a lot of progressive metals and such so lighter bass is usually a preference for me.

Just want for music in my man room so no need for mics or anything

  • better to spend a bit more to get Pro?

    • +23

Some people don't like the 'in-ear' of the Pro.

      • +4

Yeah, I hate stuffing those silicon type of earbud tips into my ear canal. I find them really uncomfortable but many others have no issue… Just comes down to personal preference.

        • Same here.. I got the ANC Airpods 4 and they are comfy on the ear.

        • Causes me physical pain and discomfort. It's a shame, because all the better headphones i can find are that design - these seem to be the most reliably good earbuds of this fit - which sucks because they are priced in a way that makes me like something just slipped a finger in my

      • Pro works for me.. standard one just fall off as I don't have the groove in my ear that is required for this to be in place.

    • The Pro 2 is the only Airpods model with clinical hearing aid function if that is useful for you.

  • +2

But Jan 2025 delivery, no thanks lol

    • Damn, just ordered one without noticing this… Changed my mind now.

      • +1

Pretty sure it won't actually be in Jan… Based on the Moto debacle last week

    • I pre-ordered from MacApp and they overestimate their delivery times, I got them a month before I expected to.

  • Will officeworks price beat this?

  • -5

$16 more, just get it from JB to be safe from possible fakes?

    • +3

      This one with ANC

      • my bad - ignore me

        • Done before you even asked :)

  • +2

    Thanks OP

  • +5

Just when I thought I got a great deal for $240 when they were first released back in September… Ah well, I'm enjoying mine!

  • +4

been burnt with fake airpods before. I wouldn't buy again from any non-"mainstream" seller.
look up online videos/articles - the fakes are almost impossible to tell apart from genuine initially
NB - not suggesting this seller is dodgy, or these items are fake.

    • +1

I have heard that in some Chinese online platforms, seller mix in fake/refurb ones with new stocks, so while you are getting that genuine feedback and much of the orders saw customer getting the good ones, the price is 'subsidised' by the fact that part of the stock is not genuine which leads to these negative feedback.

Might also be the case here tbh, oh well, gonna be a spin of luck to see if I hit it jackpot, if not - heres hoping that ebay plus/paypal sides with me - which they should (?)

    • +4

Macapp eBay is owned by wireless1 https://www.wireless1.com.au/
they have been operating since 2006 as physical stores, then moved to purely online in 2018

      • thanks, didn't know that. i don't see wireless one selling fakes intentionally, and they probably validate their suppliers (even if grey importing)
price is too good to be true but that changes the equation IMO and probably makes it worth the risk (although I won't bite. sticking with officeoworks, amazon etc even if paying a bit more).

  • Was just looking at this today. Thanks heaps for the find OP.

Would love ANC on a pair of earpods but I absolutely hated the full in ear style with the silicone fittings - I am aware these create a better seal, but they also kills my ears.

I'm sure theres quite a few others like me and I'm glad apple made something for thos of us thats in this boat.

  • Good price but like others have said, I’m also worried about fakes. Waiting for a better deal (hopefully)

  • +1

    Smells fishy

    • +3

Sometimes we need reminding of the old saying: "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is."
Very hard when the bargain hunting side of the brain doesn't want to listen to logic. :D

    • The store is legit and highly reputable on OzB. Not fishy.

  • +2

I'm so conflicted because macapp are good usually but i almost bought a pair of fakes off ebay yesterday from another place that seemed really good. I bought the non noise cancelling version for $180 at hub by triforce yesterday but yeah I don't think its worth the risk

edit: and the fact it wont come before christmas too

  • I bought these from from macapp when they were on pre-order, and the ones I received I am confident we not fakes. I had the option to register the AirPods with apple care via iPhone settings. I doubt the fakes can do that.

    • +2
    • the fakes can do that. we did that plus a whole bunch of other tests and it seemed fine. until my daughter dropped it and it just split at the seams and we could see the inside was clearly not genuine. Apple said the fakes generate valid SN's now and if you don't have a proof of purchase from an authorised reseller, the apple care becomes invalid. YMMV obviously

  • Damn expired at checkout

  • was on the edge, but already have airpod pro 2

  • Good deal, I too bought one from them on the initial release. I am inter In comments made around the fake ones! How could it be fake if your device recognises it and it comes up with S/N and warranty term!

    • +1

I got burnt with fake airpod pros 2. They show up as genuine airpods, including the menu in settings, and warranty details etc all appear to be genuine. I know they are fake because find my doesn't work, and they don't sound anywhere near as good as my original airpods pro. So just because they come up in warranty doesn't mean they are genuine unfortunately.

      • Well then I wouldn't know if mine are genuine or fake. Got air pods pro 2 and this one from the same seller. All I can tell is air pods pro 2 sound better louder more clear and slightly better ANC and better battery. But hate the silicon in ear bit and use these ones more often and love them. They do come up in find my.
I thought macapp is authorised apple retailer!

  • So many fakes on eBay guys, look closely

    • +3

I have ordered the same item from the same store in last deal
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866848

      Confirmed its genuine
Able to check on Apple Care
Able to seamlessly transfer between Apple device (Mac, iPad, iPhone)
Able to change noise cancellation settings in iphone (transparant, adaptive, noise cancellation)

  • Any Android users here? How do these headphones work with those?

    • Haven't used this ones but have connected my gf's previous model airpods to my S23 with no issues other than them seeming overpriced compared to my cheapy soundpeats haha

      • Do you know if ANC worked, or was able to be turned on/off?

        • Yes of course, those aren't eco-system locked

        • +1

No because I said hers were a previous model so no ANC on them, airpod 3's.

  • Update: Item shipped…… will be interested to see real or not

  • +1

Item shipped. A tracking number is generated but the item is yet to be picked up by Auspost.

  • +1

    Onboard for delivery.

Still at work, will report back ~5PM

  • +1

Yeah my partners are being delivered today. Hopefully they are genuine.

  • Late update, can confirm these are as genuine as they come in.

Everything worked flawlessly including all sound/EQ/ANC settings & find my iphone. Within settings was also prompted that I had 30 days to buy apple care+.

  • Mine arrived today and can confirm they are genuine.

Compared with another Airpod 4 ordered from the apple store, I can't tell the difference in its performance.

  • Has anyone been able to get a tax invoice for their order? Messaged days ago, no reply.
