  • It looks like the brown switch is $30

Great deal. Bought one as a backup. Been using RK after my keychron mysteriously died.
    Also available at MSY.

    • How the RK compare to Keychron out of curiousity?

      • +4

In my experience Keychrons are better built but more finicky with a Bluetooth connection. But those are just wild generalisations, and I am a rank amateur at this game.

      • I'm looking for a Keychron sale because my wife's RK96 is dying after about a year of use. She was happy with the feel of it but it's slowly been losing connections.

First it lost the wired connection. It's permanently connected and keeps charged but won't work with wired. The connection to the dongle went next and it can't use it anymore and now we're down to Bluetooth but even that cuts out periodically, requiring a reset.

I think it's fine as an entry-level mechanical keyboard because of its price but I won't be buying it again.

MSY was purchased by Umart probably over more than a year ago.
All MSY, PCByte stores and Umart stores are effectively the same company now and all share the same stock.

      • +4

DAMN, I had no idea about that. in a way thats a shame, less competition.

  • +1

Can someone please help me understand the difference in the models here? I had a read but couldn't quite figure it out, sorry if it's something quite obvious.

    • +3

I'm no expert but I just bought one.
As far as i could tell the key variables are wired/wireless, size, switches feel/sound, case colour, backlight color.
I got wireless, 75% size, brown switches, white case, blue only backlight for $20. https://www.umart.com.au/product/rk-royal-kludge-rk84-blue-b…

Perhaps someone with more knowledge might recommend a different one. But I've always wanted to try a mechanical keyboard and figured for $20 why not.

        Thank you!

The brief summary of the switches is

Red - linear - a smooth travel all the way down no bumps or clicks

Brown - tactile - while most in the hobby would deny calling brown tactile as the bump is weak and halfway through the travel had yucky it does have a bump as opposed to being smooth all the way down

Blue - clicky - bump like brown but also has a metal piece to make a clicky noise. Sometimes more tactile feeling but also noisy and will annoy those around you

      • Good summary. It’s up to personal preference, but I find reds to be the best.

Get blue if you want to piss people off with the noise.

      • Thanks, thats great!

Get the hot swappable so you can swap out the switch later.

OOS at all VIC stores!!!!!!!!!!!!! and MSY tooooooo ;)

    • +3

Thanks, saved me going through them all.

  • +4

Thanks, scored RK ROYAL KLUDGE RK68 65% Hot-Swappable Wireless Mechanical Keyboard, Brown Switch, Black Case for $30.

These are clearly not OOS in other states, so please do NOT report as expired.

  • Darn, pulled the trigger on EPOMAKER TH80 2 days ago for $67.50 before the RK ROYAL KLUDGE deal came along. How does both keyboards compare given the $20 price difference. Thanks.

    • +1

I have a TH80SE and the volume dial alone is worth the extra cost. None of the RKs have anything comparable.

      • Thanks mate. I just received my EPOMAKER TH80 today and have no regrets getting it after using it for a few hours.

  • These are likely to be outemu rebranded switches if you were wondering.

Their red ones felt a little bit on the scratchy side to me.

They're not particularly standout boards in any way, but the price is low enough to throw the keyboard at the nearest child who is still using some old dome board they got with their computer. (As in a gift, not literally throwing keyboards at people)

The software is horse manure, and the firmware updaters are not unlikely to permanently brick your board. So avoid those.

    • On the plus side, RK tend to put decent batteries in their keyboards, definitely compared to Akko at any rate. I have a RK98 which I swapped to Outemu silent whites and it's a pretty decent keyboard. At these prices, there's little to no real competition.

In terms of longevity, capacity, or "propensity to go into thermal runaway and turn keyboard into puddle of melted plastic"? I've seen at least one instance of RK board going full meltdown, but in reality it's possible anywhere the lipo pouch fails short. I don't know enough about the part selection of BMS and battery in these boards to have a sure opinion on any brand's safety compared to another.

In regards to Akko… I think everyone is at the point where they just recommend their sub-brand Monsgeek instead. In particular, their QMK/VIA compatible boards. I do believe the M1 V5 has just launched, so it should filter down to the AU resellers soon. It looks like the M1 might not have a wired-only option anymore, since their site seems to indicate a 8000mAh battery and wireless on both M1 V5 models.

        • Longevity. I'm not pretending to know anything about the battery makeup.

    • Thanks for the write-up.As well as the battery info in your later comment.

I was in the market for a mech to throw at a child, but knowing their limitations and lack of refinement makes me feel better that I missed out.

I'm probably in the minority that prefer a wired keyboard with no battery inside. I swap out keyboards occasionally but it doesn't bother me so much. I just hate the idea of a non-replaceable battery sitting in there and eventually dying.

      • I just hate the idea of a non-replaceable battery sitting in there and eventually dying.

I wouldn't say they're completely non-replaceable. Usually just a lipo pouch cell with a 2-pin JST connector. Only issue is sourcing the correct dimensions + connector to fit in the case and making sure the polarity matches. These typically run fine in wired mode without the battery connected too.

Well, at least for these boards where I think it's just unscrew and lift up. Any board that requires a pry tool for disassembly (Aula comes to mind), I would probably hate to do due to the likelihood of scratching the case.

        • Yes I understand they can be replaced with a bit of know-how, but I'd be scared of breaking things when certain cases aren't designed to be opened up. Saw a YouTuber break plastic tabs on a nuphy which would make me pretty upset.

The only manufacturer that I know of that makes wireless keyboards with user replaceable batteries (AAA, I think) are Leopold.

          https://leopold.co.kr/product/fc750rbt-pd-%EC%B0%A8%EC%BD%9C…

I actually have the wired version of this and it's really solid.

But I don't think there are any Australian distributors anymore. I suspect it's because they are expensive and the lack of bells and whistles of so much of the competition, as well possibly some yuck colour choices in their designs.

Maybe it's also the same old story. Many features + lower quality beats Minimal features built to a higher quality.

  • I love my RK84, but I find it difficult to type accurately on the red switches. Has anyone tried the Outemu Silent Yellow Jades, or have any recommendations for other silent switches?

    • +2

Running Outemu Silent Cream Yellows in my RK61 and Kailh Whale Silents in my GMK61 (both tactile silents). I'm only new to this keyboard stuff but definitely prefer the feel and sound of the Kailhs but then they're completley different keyboards (gasket, pcb vs tray mount, aluminium) and the Kailhs were substantially more expensive than the Outemus…. YMMV :)

If you've missed on on the RKs and after a "budget" mechanical keyboard I'd suggest looking at the GMK61 on Aliexpress. I paid about $32US for it and that's with switches and keycaps but because it's hot swappable you can change it up however you want. .

      • Do you know if there are other brands that are hot swappable with the RK besides outemu?

        • +1

When looking at hot swap switches there's 2 things I've found you need to look out for:
          1. 3 pin and 5 pin switches. Not a biggie because if you buy a 5 pin switch but your PCB only supports 3 pin switches you just use nail clippers or side cutters to remove the additional 2 plastic pins
          2. There appears to be two "standard" hot swap sockets. There's the Outemu ones which are generally found on really cheap keyboards. This only accept thin pinned switches (I.e. the metal contact switches that plug into the board are thinner) like the Outemu and Akko Switches. The other type of socket is a Kailh socket which will support all switches whether the contacts are thick or thin. My RK61 and GMK61 have Kailh style 5 pin so will support anything. I have a cheapo Temu ($3.50) hot swappable (HXSJ V900) which only accepts 3 pin Outemu switches…..

I previously had the Kailhs in the RK61 but swapped them into the GMK61.

          Hope this helps.

          • @Limbot: Thanks! That definitely helped break it down.

      • Thanks for the insight, I'll take a look at the a
        Kailhs. :)

Wish that they have num pad

  • Have been looking at getting a rainy75 or similar but not sure at this price whether I should just save the money instead.

    • I was in the same boat and bit the bullet on the RK's

    • +1

The trick is you can never have enough keyboards. You will buy this then you will buy new caps and switches then you will end up buying the higher end aluminium board anyways

  • Thanks, bought one for work.

  • +1

I bought this "RK89 85% 89 Keys Triple Mode" for $35. I hope it will be good.

  • +4

Almost bought one then realised that it doesn't have the function key row. I'm way too old to unlearn using those.

  • For some reason the YouTube algorithm stopped giving me keyboard reviewers. Really grateful for that, what a stupid hobby I was into. I totally forgot about it because YouTube made me forget!

  • Any good deals on a full size mechanical keyboard?

  • damn all the good ones gone :(

  • Damn can't post the link kaiju 8 key cap… Not sure if it fits

    • +1

It's likely to be unsuitable with the stock switches (ie. full 4.0mm travel) if it's a set in Cherry Profile due to north-facing interference. (Cherry Profile sometimes gets auto-translated from Chinese into "Factory profile" or similar, not to be confused with OEM profile. Keep this in mind if buying sets off of Taobao, AliExpress or the dumpster fire known as Temu)

Damn it! Am spewing i missed out! This looked like an awesome bargain!

  • geez these all sold out quick
