Built-in lithium-ion battery instead of a capacitor, no thanks in hot Australian summer.

    • What's the general risk here, is it a full blown fire hazard or will just fry and have to be replaced?

        • +22

Nothing will happen. 60C is considered the top of the safe operating range for lithium ion batteries. Keep them at 60C for 5 days and nothing will happen. Double it and you'll have problems.

Regardless, telling someone to "try it and see what happens" is incredibly unhelpful and doesn't belong here.

      • Very unlikely but can potentially lead to a disa3

      • +2

60C is the top of the safe operating range for lithium ion batteries. Temperatures above this causes general slow degradation of the battery (which is made up of many different materials), speeding up the higher the temp gets. Once you get over 100 the electrolyte specifically starts to decompose really quickly and you're at high risk of thermal runaway (bad).

Short answer - if you're parking in the sun on a scorching hot day put up a $2 windscreen shade and you'll be fine.

No, I haven't read anyone with dash cams with built-in Li-on batteries exploded yet, but it is more likely the batteries failing under the constant hot sun. With capacitor you won't have to worry about that.

Meh I park outside and it’s been going strong 3 years

      • Same here in two cars with a unit each (knock on wood), "bang" for buck minus the explosion.

    • Such a marketing myth, keep spreading the word my man.

      • -1

And where is your evidence this is a marketing myth? I am saying this based on many user experience from DashCamTalk forum over the past 10 years. Even the late great jokiin (R.I.P.) designed his brand of Street Guardian dash cams only using capacitors. When you look at those premium brand good quality manufacturers such as BlackVue and ThinkWare, how many of their models still using Li-on batteries instead of capacitors? What a noob.

        • No issues with any battery dash cam I've ever had in QLD, no issue with any from family and friends.
You are paying a premium when you don't have to.

          But you do you man.

@Jessie Ryder: Of course, not everyone is going to have issue with their dash cams with built-in Li-on batteries, only some of them. I have had mine failed in the past.

            • @edfoo: In the past yes, the new Lithium batteries no.
Pay a premium if you want.

  • good price

I had these. Useless without capacitor. Recordings don't save when you turn off the car

    • battery too hot 24/7

  • +3

I didn't like the video quality on this unit. Even in daylight hours it wasn't clear.

    • thanks, i was gonna pull the trigger on these… sounds like it's not worth it.

  • Sony IMX307 is old news and used for interior cabin cameras in some dashcam models now

  • Have all. 70mai cameras but seems like amazon has taken off all their reviews?

Worthwhile getting one with a screen.

Got one last 6 months then battery is not charging, reset your date time on every start of the car, no more 70mai for me, useless junk.

  • Anyone know the difference between their 3 hardwire kits?
