[ACT] iiNet Ultra VDSL2 Max 500/25 $39.99/M for 6 Months (New Canberra Customers, $89.99/M Ongoing, $10 Modem Delivery) @ iiNet

120

Canberra only.

All the VDSL2 tiers (50/15, 100/25, 500/25) are discounted to $39.99 per month, for first 6 months. You will likely require a site visit by technician (typically free if they just need to perform line signal checks, possible fees if you need line work). The tech visit will also supply and 'install' a network termination device/unit. Your service is the ethernet out from that box, the network operator/s control the NTD.

The $39.99/mth includes their 500/25 plan, which generally appears (currently) to be without a speed limit profile (so you get max your line can support on g.Fast). The 2 wholesale plans on Vision network are 250/50 and 1Gbps/100 (max/max), so 🤷 what iinet plan down the track (with enough end-user data Vision and the VDSL2 retailers may reconfigure their product plans).

Formerly known as the TransACT network, it is now operated by Vision Networks, a wholly owned subsidiary of TPG iinet. There are a number of retail providers offering gFast services to customers via this network.

Please also consider supporting the team over at Infinite Networks, who provide an absolutely first class service and support on this same VDSL2 g.Fast network.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2024

  • So I’m not familiar with the Transact/vision network being relatively new to the ACT. I’m currently on FTTN, iiNet website suggests VDSL is available at our address, any downsides to switching? Speeds available are much faster.

    • Check if you can swap from nbn FTTN to FTTP. If not then iiNet VDSL2 can be faster than nbn FTTN and a minor downside is there are less providers to choose from.

      • No FTTP available. What hardware do we need for VDSL? I only ask as we’re in a Mr Fluffy knockdown rebuild property, is it possible the Transact line wasn’t reconnected?

        • Yes, it's possible that there's a box on a nearby pole. Not everyone on the Transact line got connected though. New connection will probably incur a connection fee. Give iiNet or Infinite a call.

    • Speed depends on distance from the VDSL node. From memory, tech said when upgrading my VDSL from 100 Mbbs that if you're more than 200m away then the Max setup isn't worth it (basically won't give you the high speed). Currently my speed is ~540/38, have measured 650/38 in quieter times.

iiNet used to be one of the top-rated ISPs before being bought by TPG. Now service/support is variable ime and surveys seem to agree. The VDSL support is very good once you get past the one/two tier go-betweens. Non-VDSL specific issues (modems, connectivity etc) are handled by a separate people.

Anyone with VDSL already should give sales a ring at iiNet, or Infinite. Moving from NBN is (should be) seamless providing you actually have the old Transact connection.

Canberra only, perhaps add to title not just ACT ?

    • +1

      Isn’t ACT = Canberra?

      • No, but getting very close. The infrastructure was rolled out to VERY limited areas.

  • Strange. When I type in my address I get this.

"Ultra VDSL2 Broadband is available at your address."

But I know they never rolled it out to my suburb. I can only select up to 100Mpbs. Are they selling NBN and pretending it is their network?

Here is my experience with iiNet, all 3 family members, used to be with them, and every 1-2 months, it suddenly stopped working, the only way to fix this is to reboot your modem, these modems are all different brands too, Netgear, TPLink and Asus.
Since we moved to another ISP, we have no issue using the exact BYO modem as with iiNet,

  • Good deal. I’m currently on this service paying $69/month. Getting ~710Mbps down, 105Mbps up.

Have any existing customers had any luck calling and asking for this price?

    • +1

Yes, I did. They make a new account for you and disable your old account once you've been upgraded. Credit will be given for unused monthly charge on your old plan. Alternatively use InfiniteNetwroks. That will mean you don't have to deal with the at times inane/inflexible TPG/iiNet phone support.

      • Cheers, did you need to pay another $10 for another modem?

        • Yes, $10 for new modem delivery. Arrived quickly, days before the new install.
Small Vision Network box provided means an additional powerpoint or powerboard is required. Install took about 20m. The node is just around the corner from me.

          • @Igaf: Cheers. To clarify, I’m already using the iiNet VDSL Max (G.fast) service. I was just wanting to get the further discounted rate.

            • @Hargain Bunter: Sales was happy to do that for me about 2-3 years ago, new account wasn't required then. Possibly more intergration with TPG means they follow different rules now. iiNet was a better ISP pre TPG imo.

          • @Igaf: Oh why did you need another modem when you were already on a vdsl2 package?

            • @Techefy: Possibly didn't. It's part of their "new" customer deal and a reasonable upgrade. For $10 delivered I wasn't going to quibble. VX 420 has faster wifi with bigger capacity.

      • Thanks for the headsup about infinite network, at the end of the discounted 6 months with iiNet I will probably switch to infinite.

        • Was mentioned in xyx's deal info. Friend changed to them from iiNet recently.

  • I am with iiNet with FTTB Ultra VDSL2 Broadband in an apartment complex. When streaming SBS On-Demand at night, I regularly get frequent dropouts. Tech support is unable to understand why.
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?
Any recommendations for an ISP with a reliable service in the ACT?

    • +2

No. Did they send out a tech to check the apartment and your individual connection? Did they check your history and confirm that they can see the dropouts when you phoned them? If so they need to fix it (free) or refund part of your monthly payment. Mentioning the Telecom Ombudsman (TIO) or simply that you're looking for a new ISP might get their attention.

Thank you lgaf. That is very useful information.

  • Did someone say something about when the company supplies their modems they have more control or stronger restrictions ? I saw someone talk about it once before- I want to jump on this but the modem issue is throwing me off

    • Don't know what issue you're referring to but it's a very simple job to log into your modem, rename your wifi, change its password and set up whatever security you want.

Without getting into all the technical stuff…

(For $10 delivery) They will provide you with a modem/router combo which will sit downstream of the NTD, and you can login to it. Usually they send a tp link device shown in the signup page, which is pre config to allow ISP access via TR069. They do this to help fix end customer oops moments, or to OTA update your firmware. You do not need to use this combo device they send you (but can't avoid it seems), and it is redundant if you have your own router and basic knowledge of home networks (ie how to identify and connect DSL/WAN ports, set your credentials, confirm authentication). Stacks of guides around, and whirlpool (and former OB threads) are filled with details and helpful gurus.

The tech visit will supply and install an NTD network termination device, which is (strictly not exactly the same but) analogous to the NBN FTTP box and gear installed outside someone's home. This NTD unit is essential to providing the service to you, but is NOT your hardware and will be entirely accessed and controlled by Vision/iinet/Infinite etc; you will have no login, and no role or access at all within the NTD^: it is the last piece of ISP hardware in the network chain to provide your vdsl2 network terminal > customer connection point. Due reasons of the network, it just needs a quiet place with power to live in your home rent free.
^ Infinite do provide you some of the info from your acct dashboard.

Think of the NTD like the red mail boxes, you can use them to send your mail but don't get to peek or tweak inside them (or perhaps the old foxtel boxes & sat dishes another example?). You take an ethernet cable from this NTD into the WAN port of your own router (or the WAN port on the TP-Link they send you for $10 delivery). The TP-Link they send you for $10 is like the mailbox at your home, you can replace it with something of your own choosing (analogy not applicable to multi-unit or apartments ;).

If you have your own recent router or modem router with devices connected to it (wired, or wireless), then *likely all you need to do is connect the NTD to the WAN port on your existing device (and then input the correct config details into your device).

      * I say likely because there is soo much variety out there in devices and service configs, so not easy to know what provider you have currently and the hardware you've got setup.

        Amazing explanation.

    • Just did some Whirlpool reading after xwx's mention of TR-069. Now understand your issue better.

  • Infinite Networks are infinitely better at providing this service. Not as cheap as this intro rate but way better customer service and way better plans available.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/875114

    • I also think Infinite a much better ISP, and provide better features (for those to whom such things matter) and a super helpful and very capable support team. It is why I encouraged ppl to consider signing up with them. (I nearly did myself, the moment they opened gFast for residential connects because I was following the blistering speeds reported in field tests).

However, not everyone uses the same decision metrics and, $40/mth for max-rate gFast is a reeeeeally compelling offer. (I believe) the 500/25 iinet plan is actually MAR / MAR, based on the tiers Vision offers to RSPs; which makes it comparable to the $80/mth Infinite plan. That cost difference will matter to some people.

Also, thanks for sharing that infinite Networks deal!
