Crazy price. Definitely have to be selling either at a loss or MSI is giving out some large rebates to clear stock.

    • +12

when i discussed with the MSI rep at PAX, they seemed to have a metric sh1tload on hand in AU.

the price has dropped everywhere, MSI is probably handing out scanbacks to get these bastards out before Lunar Lake model in a month or two

  • +10

Seems crazy cheap for the price.

It's around the price of mini pc deals from more obscured brands

    • +1

And that's without a pretty impressive display.

    • +2

Right? It's like a portable Mini PC with a screen, battery and joysticks.

  • +1

Seems to be a lot cheaper than the SD, Legion Go and Ally Z1.
    Is it that bad?

    • +12

      It's shithouse

edit: even with 10w more than the z1e it's still slower in nearly every benchmark (40w docked vs 30w maxed on rog ally for example)

      • +4

Its not shithouse, its amazing value for money.

If it was the same price as the competitors, that would be a different story.

        • sd lcd is $650 for the 256. less storage but same performance at much lower power + much lower power options. significantly better materials and ergonomics. steamos beats the shit out of windows on many fronts. list goes on.

it would be a different discussion at $400 like it is in europe, but at $600 it is a hard sell imo.

          • @maybe a bot: Dunno, I have a Steamdeck and think this isnt a bad deal still. I am so glad I bought the SD just because it runs linux etc, but if you play games the SD cant, this is a great pricepoint!

    • +11

Worst of the bunch in terms of gaming performance, because it's the only one running intel. Bad efficiency too.

For some goofy reason, apparently the Ultra 5 version sometimes perform better than the Ultra 7 version too

Other aspects, I'd say better than average. It has VRR (only ally has it atm i believe) and hall effect joystick (might be the only one of the bunch with it)

      • +1

Legion Go has hall effect joysticks but no VRR.

  • +6

Seems like a good deal on the surface, just beware it performs quite a bit worse than its closest competitor (ROG Ally) - but for the lower price, it's probably worth it!

  • Are these good devices?
Maybe not compared to a laptop, but as hand helds go?
Nintendo release their Switch replacement maybe in a year or so, but would this sort of thing be worth getting?

    • Asus rog ally Z2 range will come out next year. Will be expensive but lots of potential. Nintendo switch 2 should be out as well. Also would be pricy. Like all new tech

If you want something now and cheap it's probably OK. But once those are out, you probably wish you waited. However like everything else gets outdated eventually

      Its inevitable

    • for gaming it's a resounding no. The frame times can be over 200ms.

      • +1

        at launch, bad.

since updates, well worth the price.

  • I think we are on the verge of the next round of Intel handhelds, also the Z2 chips as well.. This is just clearing stock. I guess it's great if you're going to play indie games or play everything at Low (if that even runs), At this price, why not just get SD LCD? or spend another $200 odd and get the OLED SD?

    • +1

We're still a fair way out from the 2nd gen. MSI has already pushed back their Claw 8 after showing it at Computex.

      • End of next year for sure you will see something. That is if you bother waiting or get something now

  • Are they oled?

  • +5

Another 100 or so off and I'll be in I think. Be nice to have something for little indies that don't make it to the switch.

    • +1

      So as emulation handheld device

  • +1

I know these are terrible, but are they worth it at this price?

    • +3

yes, its a steal at this price. Great for indi games on steam. i use mine to run emudeck and play a lot of emulator games.

      • +2

Can handle switch emulator and ps2?

    • -1

not if you want something to game with. it has horrible stuttering issues.

      • -1

not sure why i'm being downvoted but have your source:
        https://youtu.be/JZG-WP8A_2c?t=1250

        • +1

Perhaps because those review are pre bios and driver updates

          • @misunderstood98: user reports issues continuing to this day.

          • @misunderstood98: https://youtu.be/fUneWPlBFaw?t=465 but keep down voting legitimate criticism that might actually help someone inform their decision.

            • @JigBew: I didn't down vote you on your later comment dude, you can click votes to see.

Also just watched her video, which conflicts with other reviewers and some of the commenters in her video. Results may vary i guess.

Also, the reason I responded at all was your initial comment was informing really poorly. Since the improvements, most reviewers have very positive feedback. Gotta call out growth when I see it.

  • +1

The MSI AI8 coming soon and so is the new AMD Z2… I know this is cheap and super tempting but its still not performing well compared to its competitors and is beaten when compared with ROG Ally and Legion Go in recent review, even after bios and driver updates. If you really want a handheld now, I would spend a little more and get an ROG Ally or Legion Go, or just hold off for the next gen handhelds which are so close.

    • MSI already pushed back the release of the Claw 8 until late-2025. It'll be at least 12months before we get anything Z2 from Lenovo or Asus. Valve seems to want the Z3 before starting on SD2.
Even at $450 the better option is still BBSS the extra for a LGo, SD or Ally X.

      • +1

        Bbss?

        • +3

          Beg, borrow, steal, save

      • CES is just around the corner, so think we'll see another wave of these device shortly (except SD2). Lenovo has accidently leaked their Legion Go S. AMD Z2e is rumoured to also be announced then.

      • +1

        https://videocardz.com/newz/msi-claw-8-ai-revealed-up-to-cor…

Claw8 just sneaking into Q4. Drivers are mature enough now to justify it + Lunar Lake is finally in full swing as Apple have moved off TSMC N3B. Drivers were a bit half baked at PAX.

Z2 launches CES probably. STX is finally at the point where the drivers also arent total garbage, so good time for launch. Probably see devices with it (Legion Go 2 etc) in Q1 with retail release in Q2.

Valve wanting better hw is dead on though, Z1 was half baked from hw perspective (GPU not going below 800mhz due to hw fault, high uncore power) and for not huge gains. I'm not a betting man but I'd expect Rdna4+Zen5c in '26 or something of that description

  • For some reason, I'm thinking of getting this as a laptop alternative. I have both portable monitors and portable keyboards. Would bringing this kinda set-up to a library work?.

    • +1

It's not practical as a laptop alternative, this is a handheld first.

      • Yeah I'm watching reviews to get this crazy idea out of my head. Good computing power theoretically but the lack of ports makes it very impractical.

        • +2

Just get a usb c dock. Problem solved.

          • @mrvaluepack: The problem is charging though, the usb c hub will consume the charging port, unless there is one that charges the device as well as getting usb output? Then it'll be so expensive it defeats the purpose (of getting this as a laptop alternative, thinking of this as a MiniPC).

            • @levqchi: Nah, there are ports out there which have 2 x usb c output with one for pd and are like only $20-50 only. Thats not crazy expensive.

              • -1

@mrvaluepack: Could you link one example? I'm not very well versed with these USB C standards.

                • +1

@levqchi: so many…. just search usb dock pd

                • @levqchi: Limited-time deal: UGREEN Revodok USB-C Hub 6 in 1 10Gbps USB C 3.2 & USB-A 3.2 4K 60Hz HDMI, 100W Power Delivery for MacBook Pro/Air, iPad Pro, Thinkpad Rog Ally and More. https://amzn.asia/d/8zeZe0k

          • +3

@mrvaluepack: Stop encouraging the poor guy…his trying to find a way out of his crazy scheme

            • @scud70: Poor (in the sense of having no money) gal* appreciates your thoughts.

              • +1

                @levqchi: Oops sorry 😐… Embarassing

              • +1

                @levqchi: m'pauper

                • +1

@TheBardsTale: that made me lol :)))))))

                  • @levqchi: It's honestly not the craziest scheme. The ergonomics will not be great for use as a laptop, but if you were on the market for a mini PC anyway for moderate web usage, light gaming (esports games at 1080p), you can absolutely dock this at home, and take it on the go.

      • +1

I use my SD as a laptop alternative when i am travelling sometimes. I use a Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra as a second screen and bring along a foldable keyboard and pocket mouse. Does the job when i need Windows (dual boot of course).

    • +5

Don’t do it. The effort required to setup gets tiresome real quick.
For a laptop, you take it out, open it up and maybe plug it in.
For this, you have get out the handheld, get out the dock, get out the portable monitor, get out the keyboard, plug in the wall charger and plug in cables
Then do it in reverse when packing up.

      • +1

Thanks! Please knock some sense into me.

      • +1

She already has the portable monitor and keyboard. It will add 1 minute.

A $550 computer upgrade, depending on what she is currently running, could make sense.

Other use case is if the portable computer use is secondary, primary use is casual gaming.

But if you need to buy the monitors and the keyboard, yes, I agree, go for something purpose built for your use case.

        • It might not sound like much but it really does get tiresome setting it up.
I tried something similar with a mini-PC and was over it pretty quickly.
Even with things like a single USB-C cable for power and video to the display and wireless keyboard and mouse, it takes so much longer and effort than the 5 seconds to setup and pack up a laptop with barely any thought to it.

          • @FireRunner: I rock a difficult set up for work, as it is required for my job. It is what is it. Just comes down to planning.

          • @FireRunner: Dunno. Just buy a dock thinky so it is as easy as pulling out a USB C cable and plugging in a new PC

            • @serpserpserp: Give it a go if you wish. Perhaps I value the convenience of quick setup more than most but based on my experience I wouldn't recommend it.

    • I have a Legion Go and I use it as a portable Adobe Lightroom setup. I have a bluetooth mouse/keyboard that fits in a small bag. I shoot aviation events and there's nothing like downloading images, sorting through images and editing images in a media centre hub at an airshow with 50 people behind you watching you pump out images for clients.

It's just way quicker than my 3 yr old laptop. It's astonishing how much tech is in these 'gaming' devices.

How does these Intels compare against say, the Ryzen 7-6800 or the 7800 series?

    • -2

Watch one of the many reviews out there, or read above comments? Next level laziness if you cannot even be bothered to read the comments in this thread.

      • But how does it compare tho

        • +1

          at launch, bad.

since updates, well worth the price.

      • +1

Don't be a dick, its a simple question.

    • +1

      at launch, bad.

since updates, well worth the price.

  • Only Steamdeck and Asus ROG Ally are worth your money. This thing is not as popular. The community doesn't really thrive. Therefore you would be buying so for the hardware not the software and longevity

Pretty sure stock has piled up they need to clear hence cheap

    • Meaning, could get cheaper…

  • How's this compare to Odin 2, especially for emulation?

Maybe battery is alot worse?but preforms same?

    • +2

the odin is nowhere near this unit.

      • Seems like a good deal as the Odin is a similar price range.

        • Emulation on Android is terrible and overpriced now compared to PC handhelds. You get a fraction of the power for similar money. I think this would be a great emulation option at the price.
I bought an Odin 2 and ended up giving it away. My Steam Deck just performs so much better and the experience is much smoother.

  • +3

Bought 3 as desktop replacements for the office with hubs and external displays. Better than a steam deck because you get to support an Australian business this way, plus help out MSI who are struggling to shift these.

    • +1

Why not just buy mini pcs?

    • +2

Maybe if they made better products they wouldn't struggle to sell them. They can always ship them off to Russia, as MSI still operates there.

    • +1

Not sure why you're getting negged. These are more powerful than most $500 mini PC's and include a battery (think of it as a mini UPS in a desktop scenario) and a screen, which you could set up as a second screen to show a timesheet, calendar, or inbox. It's a good idea.

    • Interested to know what is your external displays setup if you don't mind.

    • +1

This is a great example of where a product isn't great for its intended purpose but at the right price can be repurposed.

  • Canaan be run with an external gpu

  • +1

New models just announced (ETA Prime video)
    https://youtu.be/vYElJMB_nIo?si=YQEIBHoQRxhTA1hR

    • The Claw 8 looks like the one I'd get, but if it is going to be $1,400 AUD ish at launch, no thanks.

  • So after all the updates this is still not good?

    Wanna play Fortnite on it

    • Yeah it's fine for for fortnite. Just not as fast as all the other alternatives

      • Wondering if anyone else will price match or lower thru prices

        • Ask them

        • You bought a legion go. Why would you want to buy a worse handheld?

          • @Originality: Nah I canceled it Mrs wasn’t happy

So just wondering on this hahaha
