Such a good price! I recently got a Steam Deck which is fantastic but the lack of GamePass is killing it for me so I'm thinking of returning it for an Ally.

Might hold off to see if the X comes down over Black Friday

    • +9

You can try dual booting Windows for the best of both worlds.

I found Windows overheads diminished the experience a bit though.

      • +1

Yep, I bought a 2TB SSD for my Steam Deck and dual boot.

      • I did think about this, from what I've read the experience isn't that great and it is tricky to set up. I might give it a go before returning it

        • +4

Plenty of YouTube guides to make it easier.

I got 60fps playing Lies of P and Dead Cells pulling around 24w and 12w respectively. Never really booted into Windows much since SteamOS was much easier to use.

        • +8

It's easy to setup. You use KDM Partition manager from Steam Desktop mode and shrink the partition Steam OS is on. You then boot from a USB stick with Windows on it and use the space reclaimed to install Windows. Once that is setup you boot back into Steam OS and configure Clover, this will give you a menu when you boot to select which OS to load.

          • +7

@sallan75: I am also a Linux user too, but sometimes I like to dissociate from the jargon and try to imagine reading things from the point of view of a general person and that paragraph is basically French

        • The experience isn't great on the Ally either. It's Windows that is the problem, not the Deck.

But ultimately it will work if you really want to play Gamepass natively.

        • +2

I installed Windows 11 on my LCD Steam Deck last weekend and it was a breeze.

Took maybe 1 hour in total but it’s pretty much download Windows media creation tool, make bootable USB, add Steam Deck Windows drivers to USB, plug USB into Steam Deck, boot into USB, install Windows, install Steam Deck Windows drivers, and finally install all your apps (including Steam Deck Tools for controller support, performance overlay, etc).

Happy to help if you have any questions.

          • @matthewzz: Thanks so much guys, just finished up setti ng up the dual boot. Took me a while (due to some user error) but looks like I'm up and running :) really appreciate everyone's advice

    • +4

If you can hold out until early to mid next year there will be Z2 variants coming based on the 890/880 igpu's … might be worth waiting (which is what i'm doing)

      • +1

I'm so impatient haha I bought the Steamdeck purely for a work trip (Balatro consumed my life during the trip lol) but now that is done this may be the way to go. Will be interesting to see price, release date and battery life for them

        • The potential pricing is what would make me jump on this vs what may come, considering the Ally X’s $1600 tag, personally.
But my deck collects dust so…

          • @JMxoxo: Yeh your right there, however i'd expect the X to drop when a new Z2 device comes in .. but i hear second solution on the impatience haha Balatro is killing my phone battery life since it was released :| … stupid addictive game!

            • @scud70: How deep are you in? I've got 90% to Completionist ++ on Steam, now I got it on Mobile and it's killing my owrk productivity

              • @Papa Huggies: Not far at all! i only got it on mobile to use up some expiring google credits and now i can't stop playing it .. lol

        • +3

You can play Balatro on your phone and you bought a >$1000 dollar gaming device to play that for a gaming trip?
That's a some high level of impatience right there

          • +4

@OLLIEBE4R: lol i think we all look for any excuses we can find to buy yet another device we don't have enough time to use … i certainly do :P … so can't judge there!

            • +3

@scud70: Most certainly. I'm holding out for the Steamdeck's official release next week and I know that I won't have that much time to use it lol

          • @OLLIEBE4R: Hahah honestly didn't expect to even play Balatro, but saw it on sale and thought I'd give it a go. Such an addictive game

      • Similar. I want to be confident it can run PS2 games at 60 FPS without stuffing about. GPU's just need another 15% or so increase is my understanding

        • +1

Don't latest SD phones can play PS2 at like 120fps?

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: Not sure why that never occurred to me. Could go find a nice case for it

            • +1

@abowen: Check out r/emulationonandroid on reddit and ETAprime on youtube.

      • I know this is a gaming console, but just be aware, this doesn't have VVC hardware support. Most likely, as its a free streaming codec, watching videos in future will chew through the battery juice even if the files are local.

Not a big deal to many, I know, but I tend to use a device for everything when I upgrade.

Also worth noting, to those who think the price of the Z1 will go down when the Z2 comes out… hardware doesn't price model that way anymore. Instead they just mark up the next gen so much, that people who want to 'save' buy the old stuff. Heaven help if the dwindling supply of last gen gets scalped, then it costs even more then original RRP. Its just the f'ed up world we live in.

But this is just my 2c. By all means, wait off if its got something you just must have.

    • +2

You can try the Greenlight app for Steam Deck, allows you to remote stream your own Xbox to your device. It gets you about 90% of the way there.

But yeah, keep in mind that Windows has it's own set of issues vs Steam OS.

      • I did try Greenlight but found it to be quite laggy. I was using Hotel wifi though (which would be the main way I would use it).

What kinds of issues does Windows have?

        • +1

Yeah if you're using it out-and-about then Windows would be your best bet.

As for issues, it's more that Windows isn't designed for handheld gaming in mind, whereas Steam OS provides a whole bunch of features that I find indispensable to the whole experience. For example, I find that a lot of older games (or games made for keyboard/mice) don't really work with a game pad, but Steam OS community layouts fixes that for you instantly.

It's also much easier to performance tweak games on Steam OS, since it's built into the OS.

  • strange i cant find this price on amazon if i search for it. The only way is to click on OP's link.

    • that's normal, like you search nintendo switch, you won't see those sold and ship by amazon japan. this is amazon uk

  • Looks like this is the actual Extreme version, can anyone confirm?

    • Description title both have it in there…

    • +1

      RC71L-ALLY.Z1_512 is standard

      RC71L-ALLY.Z1X_512 is Extreme

i cant find the specs tho on the listing

      • +5

Note that previous deals have users also reporting receiving the standard instead of extreme, however not the same listing

      • Yeah I was the commenter all of this. I wouldn't touch it if the specs and model number is not listed

      • +1

RC71L#B0CKJ7WZ6Y is the model number which I found which seems to redirect to the UK version of the Extreme.

Product specs appear to line up with the extreme model

    • Check the ASIN on Amazon UK, see if it matches up.

  • +3

be careful as based on previous deal post, people were receiving the non-extreme version. however, it was the US listing.

please refer to previous Amazon deal post.

  • +1

Is the micro sd card slot issue fixed yet?

  • +1

searching on "B0CKJ7WZ6Y" shows a few random listings for the extreme

i'm willing to take a gamble and get a refund if its not the extreme model as per description

  • Sold my steamdeck recently and picked up a z1e. Much more robust for my needs

    • +1

What features of the Z1e do you think are worth changing for?
I'm holding out for the SD official release next week and wondering if I should pick this up instead

      • i held off originally because of sleep/hibernation wasnt gonna work well for me, but i found that the hibernation mode works as good as the steamdecks (maybe not quite as fast as the switch or the steamdeck) but its pretty reliable if you arent playing an online game (forza horizon 5 will crash out)

i used to love fiddling around and tweaking things etc but with the steamdeck ultimately i got tired of it, using proton ge, and mucking around in linux isnt my thing ive had 20 years of experience in windows and linux and its file structures and other things is very hard for me to navigate around. it gets done but it takes me a lot longer.

everything just works on the ROG, it docks amazingly well, best of all too the gamepass PC/ultimate is very good value too. this is now my desktop replacement

the screen/resolution is better, the speakers are amazing, the overall build quality is a lot better, the steamdecks body feels like a kids toy. i also never found any use for the touch pads for myself

  • +1

Half arsed considering buying it with a dock to function as the family pc verse one of those 'nuc like' amd rigs.

Someone tell me this is a bad idea but I mean after all its asus the big guy vs minisforum or one of those myriad rando brands out there, it cant be that bad quality wise (and i can deal with amazon if something occurs early on)?

Only had rog laptops before and personally cant fault them one bit but the amount of complaints about the ally online had be a bit concerned.

    • It would work okay as a family PC. I only use my for gaming and have found it quite reliable. On the subreddit I think general consensus is that failure rates are definitely higher than ASUS' old reputation implies BUT if you go to the minipc subreddits, most of them have a very hard time getting warranty coverage from the manufacturer. For the Ally, at least after Gamers Nexus expose, seems to be much better. I think in AU they were never trying to pull the same thing as we have somewhat better consumer protections here.

Where this is a bad idea is that as a family PC, it's not that performant for the price you pay, as you are paying for the portability. Depending on how well your family treats shared toys the shrinking of parts to be more delicate and tightly packed to achieve that portability may also end up being a negative too.

    • get a lapdock and it will be a laptop

    • ive got the ugreen dock and it is now my gaming rig/desktop, im the only user though so it basically is just running and setup like my work laptop to me.

it would be a pain if people were walking off with it when i needed it or leaving shit open when they hibernate it

  • +1

Just watched there were some units with SD Card issues. Was that all fixed?

    • +6

No, not fixed, it's a design flaw AFAIK. They are offering extended warranties though. I think most owners just avoid using the SD Card.

      • +1

Thanks for that. SD card is important in my eyes.

    • Apparently, I wouldn't risk it though.

  • +1

Legion GO was also recently $399USD so I would just monitor prices in the lead up to Black Friday.

  • -2

My post got taken down with a warning. I will have an ad in the classifieds for the open source XG mobile eGPU dock.

    • -2

      how much for the dock?

      • Check the classifieds 🙂

  • +1

Isn’t this the model with the issues inc SD reader etc?

  • +3

Last time I order this from Amazon, it wasn't the extreme version.

    • That was from Amazon US. I'm still waiting for my refund but hoping for the best here and pulled the trigger.

      • It was a big hassle getting the refund as it had to be posted back to Amazon US.
I would wait for the BF sale from Amazon AU.

  • I bought one off a deal not long ago and it wasn't enough to run fortnite at settings I am acceptable with so I will sell mine as I invested in a laptop now

    • What settings do you play at? I was thinking of getting one of these to play Fortnite on the go.

      • If you want a high refresh rate 120+ fps 720p and all settings on lowest to achieve a steady frame rate

        • Sounds terrible lol, Thanks!

  • Everyone's trying to undercut the Steam Deck AU prices now that Valve have released it in Australia.
But a 1080p 120hz VRR display might give Valve a run of its money, especially at this price and when the closest competitor is an OLED 800p 90hz NON-VRR display on the Steam Deck OLED for $899.

    • If steam deck had vrr i reckon id go for it even though it is less powerful than the z1 extreme ally

      • I'd go for the Steam Deck OLED over this just because of OLED, especially with the ROG Ally's old price.
But honestly, I just don't entirely see the point in handheld gaming when I have a Switch I can take on the go, as well as Sunshine and Moonlight for streaming PC games to my phone.

    • The screens on either have their pros and cons so it'll be up to personal preference and what you prioritize the most (colours, Hz, VRR, etc). But the battery life of most of the handheld competitors to the SD OLED seem far worse, with the only real competitor in this regard being the Ally X at basically $700 more…
Though ofc if you're near a wall outlet more often the windows handhelds will probably be a better option with their performance gains.

      • agreed - for mine the VRR is the priority

      • You COULD just install Bazzite as SteamOS now includes drivers for the ROG Ally, meaning this can now rival the Steam Deck that has superior battery life, since it wouldn't use Windows anymore.
At least that's how I would use the Ally if I bought one.

  • -7

    CONSUUUUUUUUUME

  • I literally cannot decide between this and a SD OLED now thanks to this price drop! It's like being pulled in two directions because both have such great and bad pros and cons.
    HARDEST decision

    • +1

It comes down to how badly do you want Windows?

Windows sucks on the SD but Bazzite is pretty good on the Ally.

  • +1

In kinda worried handhelds are gonna get more like expensive every gen…rog ally X is already 1.6k imagine the price of rog ally 2…probably like 1.7&1.8k

    • the ROG Ally X is just the "pro model". It's not representative of next gen.

  • In the words of a true ozbargainer, has anybody tried pricematching with office works

    • Tried at JB but they said they’re only able to price match ‘Sold by Amazon AU’ items.

      • I was plan to ask JB to do price match, but gave up after read their T&C

  • Would seriously look at this if the SD card issue wasn't there. A major flaw in my eyes.

  • +1

    $722.16 now.

  • Has anyone had theirs ship yet? Still waiting on mine

    • I paid extra for priority shipping. DHL says I’ll get it by tomorrow.

  • Very goos price! Can pay with 10% off Amazon GC

    • Yes. It seems Cashrewards are also applicable on Amazon GC purchase.
Yesterday bought a WD Black SN850X 4TB then got approved CR$2.60 this morning.
Bought ROG Ally this morning, CR approval not yet received.
