Very easy just to make up the wax yourself. I get a little bag of teflon powder from AliExpress, some cheap basic candles from $2 shop (just remove the wick once they have melted) and some paraffin oil from bunnings. And an old electric wok I found on the side of the road. Works perfect.

    • impressive what ratio of each?
a bit of work to do

      • Haha I didn't mean it to be inpressive. But it's certainly the cheap way to do it. And you don't need to be too fussy with all the ratios of things. I just slowly added the oil until it was the right hard but slightly soft wax consistency when the mixture cooled. I've been using the same batch for about 5 years. It lasts forever. Just so glad to be done with all those disgustingly dirty wet lubes.

        • I need to buy some more but considering making some to share with mates if i can be bothered, I know it's worth it once you have made it & have a good supply

If you can't find something on the side of the road, I use a $15 mini rice cooker from Kmart, does the job really well, auto switches to "Warm" mode once the wax has melted. Holds one bag of Silca Super Secret and is big enough to fully submerge the chain.

I've looked at those little rice cookers, but had read somewhere that slow cookers were a better option since they're less likely to get too hot.

I take it you haven't had any issues with yours though?

        • I like the mini rice cooker because it takes up very little room compared to any slow cookers I could find. It is only 200 watts, so it heats up the wax very gently, takes about 20min to melt a full bag and since it automatically goes to "warm" mode once it has melted, you don't have to watch it too closely and worry about overheating the wax. I have been using this for 6 months now and have not had any problems with overheating the wax.

@BlorkenBorgans: Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I'm keen to go immersive wax on my MTB - try and prolong the life of the stupidly expensive cassette.

Getting a hold of a small vessel for heating has been the barrier since Woolies don't seem to do the cheap 1.5l slow cooker anymore.

            • @Srey: I highly recommend it, it doesn't even take that much more time. The initial degreasing of the chain is the hardest part. Once the chain is waxed and you need to rewax, just wash the chain in boiling water, dry it with compressed air, then dunk it in the wax again. I do it on road bikes and get 10,000+ km from chains and the cassette and chain rings don't wear at all. Silent drivetrain is also very nice.

@BlorkenBorgans: Yeah I've had a half assed test with the UFO drip lube and a proper clean of my current chain - silence and cleanliness is very impressive.

I want to rotate a couple of chains at least since the off road conditions are gonna lead to much lower mileage, so I'm thinking of just buying a bundle from the likes of ZFC with a couple of pre-cleaned and waxed chains and give my current one another proper clean and rewax and start with the three on rotation.

    • Do you look like Sheldon Brown 😂
