Waiting for the battery version … on Aliexpress

    • What do you think about the recent reviews showing audio issues?

    • New to this. The wifi version doesn’t have battery you’re saying?

      • +1

Reolink sell 5 different versions of their doorbell camera.

They have a PoE version (no battery), a WiFi version (no battery), and they recently released a WiFi version with a battery.

There are also versions of both non-battery doorbells which have a portrait sensor and package detection - these have a white body rather than the original black ones.

        • Thanks for the explanation, will hold out for the wifi battery model then.

          • +1

            @Flowerbomb: It's available here: https://reolink.com/au/product/reolink-doorbell-battery/

Just to add to the confusion, it's available in both black and white, but the sensor is identical regardless of colour for the battery doorbell.

Here's the OzBargain link for further discussion of this model - price remains current.

Note that unlike the other models, the battery version does not include a chime in the box - it is available as a bundle but at extra cost. You may be able to use other devices (eg Amazon Echo) as a chime.

            • @klaw81: The lack of chime is fairly shortsighted on Reolinks part, making the battery version a "$50" extra for the chime, separate purchase.

              • @marcozmitch: My guess is that they're trying to keep the entry level price down. The large included battery means it's much more expensive to make.

Given that there's a variety of options for alternative chimes, some of which you might already have, it's not a terrible decision.

There are other doorbells that don't come with a chime (eg Ring) , so this isn't unprecedented.

  • Hmmm is this better than the TP-link one posted the other day?

    • +1

Reolink doorbells are generally regarded as the best value for money on the market.

They have solid build quality, an excellent feature set, very good image quality both day and night, and are relatively cheap. The mobile app is great, their cameras work well stand-alone or as part of a complete system, and they're compatible with a lot of 3rd party systems and home automation setups.

There's also several different versions available, so you can buy the exact model that meets your requirements and don't pay for stuff you won't use.

There's nothing much wrong with the TP-Link one (apart from the low resolution image) but it's pretty hard to beat Reolink, especially when they're so frequently available at such deep discounts.

How are people hiding the ethernet cable for these POE doorbells? Can't seem to figure out a tidy way for the cabling inside the house/behind the door.

    • The ethernet connector is on the back of the doorbell, so once wall mounted, the Ethernet cable will be inside the wall and not visible.

      • Still cannot get my head around how the cable is run behind the wall/door frame?

        • +1

I run an ethernet cable into my ceiling then have a POE switch up there.
Running down into internal walls is relatively easy, work out where you are by the lighting and then find the top plate for the wall you want to drill through, just check for noggins in the section you want to drop through first.
External walls gets tricky and honestly trigger my claustrophobia a bit too much, I went through the soffit hard against the house directly above my doorbell and just have it in conduit.

        • Perhaps just google some techniques and pictures/videos to help understand?

          Here’s a non-Australian electrical example. —Don’t use this necessarily—
It does however have some decent conceptual imagery that’s similar to Ethernet cabling, which might help you understand the overarching process/outcome.

          • @theSav: That was pretty handy - thanks.

I have never seen the drop magnet method (as per video) before…

I had called an electrician to put some lights and switches, he installed the doorbell for me as well, ethernet cable went behind the brick wall and then upto into the roof and then down into another room which had the Reolink box.

  • Bought this last week. I didn't realise it wasn't the battery version.
Now I have to figure out how to run it to a power point on a brick house.

    • +2

Drill a hole through the brick - there will usually be a cavity 20-40mm wide between the bricks and the internal framing. Drop a pull-cable down from above into the cavity. It's easy to type but not a fun job.

I was lucky enough to have existing wiring nearby I could use to pull a cable through, which made it lots easier.

You may be better off selling/returning the one you have and getting the battery version.

    i have the poe one.
works with frigate, with text-to-speech (via home assistant) and 2way audio too.

  • Looks like this is the black model which doesnt do parcel detection like the white one?

    • Yes I think that's correct. The black model is a standard 4:3 landscape image.

The white one has the sensor rotated 90° so it's a portrait image that can see the ground near the door. This is why the package detection is possible.

  • Keep in mind, this one requires $5/month subscription or Home Assistant ($150ish cost) to get Rich notifications (snapshot)

There is a $5 work around called "Push over" but Email alerts from Reolink to Gmail takes way too long outside North America for some reason.

Mine took 16-17 seconds to get Snapshot notification.

I'm considering Eufy but have heard so many negative things from users about it…

Apparently it is 2-3 seconds for NA customers to get Pushover notification.

    • Probably because Gmail's data centres are in the US and not Australia

      • Thanks for the information, I didn't know that.

I'll try and find an Australian based one, but I looked and it's hard to find one that does what Gmail does.

        smtp server + automatic forwarding.

Not Australian based but Yahoo and Outlook both will not work.

Also you sure it isn't Reolink issue?

Gmail to Pushover is fast. Reolink to Gmail is the issue I'm getting.
