  • Can't say I've heard of this brand, but was expecting the reviews to be bad. They are surprisingly good!

  • +1

I have this one. It has now been banished to a spare room. The warranty has been good as this was my 3rd TV in 5 years after 2 previous failures.

Google TV will eventually seize up and cause the remote not to respond and there is no ‘simple mode’ to make it a straight up dumb tv that I have found.

I got around the freezing by enabling developer mode and limiting the background processes to just 1 (or none) but if you power off the tv you have to do that again as it will default back.

Keep expectations low but the 75” TCL C655 I purchased in its place blows it out of the water

    • See my reply below. Ours is effectively a dumb TV but no issues with it. Picture is fine and sound irrelevant as we use a dedicated 5.1 setup.

A mate does have the TCL 55" C735? and that works great - believe it's the one with a built in sub-woofer.

  • Chiq is a Western branding name for Changhong which is a massive Chinese brand. It's a bit like LG really stands for Lucky Goldstar rather than Life's Good..

Whilst we don't have this model we had a 65" Changhong which was replaced under warranty with a Chiq. Very happy with both of them and both fine with ARC receivers from Yamaha and Sony.

The warranty back then was 5 years from memory and to this day I feel a bit guilty as it turned that dead group of pixels in the Changhong 4 years into ownership was in fact a maggot - it wriggled after I'd already made the warranty call. Before you blame the brand this is not unusual apparently and Samsung are known for it too, perhaps the screen is actually a Samsung?

No issues with the Chiq replacement and it's about 3 years old now and gets used 5/6 hrs per day with Foxtel 4K, a 4K HTPC and an XBox. I keep on looking for an excuse to replace it but haven't managed yet.

I just checked and they have a warranty promotion of 5 years again so not much to lose really. We do have an 85" Sony in the big lounge but that's not nearly used as much as the one in the kitchen.

I would certainly buy a Google TV over a proprietary O/S with LG perhaps being an exception but Google is very flexible and updates frequent.

  • This or Aldi 70 inch for around this price? Was planning to buy the Aldi tv this Wednesday

  • People obsessed with getting the biggest TV size for the price, which these cheap brands do then fail.

Each to their own I suppose - I'd rather have a smaller dick of better quality than one big dick that gets flaccid after a year.
