the fee is fully tax deductible.

    You sure about that?

    • Agreed; it is quite likely that given this is a (very) introductory course that this would be considered capital in nature rather than having a sufficient nexus between current role/earning and expenditure.

You would claim this under "Cost of managing tax affairs", not self-education.

I haven't done this course, so I may be very wrong.

        • Education on how to prepare your tax return is unlikely to be deductible. In my experience the ATO would take a dim view on the claim

          • @RMBC: They say it is okay on their website.

costs associated with preparing and lodging your tax return and activity statements, for example
            buying tax reference material
            tax return preparation courses
lodging your tax return through a registered tax agent
getting tax advice from a recognised tax adviser
dealing with us about your tax affairs
buying software that allows you to prepare and lodge your tax return (you can only claim a portion of the cost if you also use the software for other purposes)

          • @RMBC: It is deductible - as stated above, you claim it at item 10 - costs of managing tax affairs.

I did the course about 20 years ago when I started as an accountant. Back then it was a decent introduction, but free online resources (including the ATO website) are way better now than they were then.

Do your tax online through myATO if its straight forward. It has all the guides built in.

Im sure these guys wont add anything extra if your tax return is straight forward

    • These guys are pretty useful if you need to register with an accountant for the sole purpose of delaying your tax return by 6 months (and also probably the cheapest way to do this). Process was super easy and all automated to get them linked to ATO as my registered “accountant”

  • 269 bucks can feed my family for 2 weeks

    • It used to be $550/- about 15 years ago

This mobs are an Awful choice when it comes to tax returns. They have got many fake testimonies and reviews online. As someone with an accountant background, I’d advice to stay away from them.

Go to your local tax accountant with CPA qualifications if you’re tax returns are complicated.

Else just do your own tax refund via the gov app if its just a simple lodgement.

Anything, just stay away from this mcdonalds of accounting industry.

  • I've previously done the course at H&R block.

It was ok back then - not great, but not bad either.

Not sure it's worth doing though, but may interest some.
