Better to spend just a little more on AMD 7000 cpu at this point (7500F go cheap on Aliexpress when on sale)
This way your not getting older DDR4, a motherboard with no good upgrade path (you can get some ok cheap B650 boards these days)
Yes DDR5 and the CPU will cost more, but will be upgradable if wanted later with something newer, and is better.
At this point LGA1700 is dead. I normally do intel myself, but with their 13/14 gen issues, LGA1851 cpu being a flop so far, even I am looking at AMD now.

Could only recommend this now if you already have a LGA1700 setup and need a replacement, or budget restraints and just can not afford the bit more for AM5.

    • What's a decent AMD combo to take over from an i5-8600 & 1060?

I don't really need a dedicated GPU anymore… not at the moment, anyway.

As far as I know, the iGPU in the 7000 and 9000 series (not the 7/9G series CPUs) is about the same. You pretty much can't game on the iGPU, but it works fine for watching videos and handling basic office tasks. You can go ahead and get one now, then wait a few months into next year for either the RTX 5000 or Radeon GPUs, or for current cards/second-hand cards to become cheaper.

        • Thanks for the guidance. I have a laptop with a 2070 & now a Legion Go for gaming.

After I replied I realised my desktop is basically just a NAS now and will be for the foreseeable future. What I really need is a board with a dozen SATA connectors & low power chip to manage it all.

          • @BinaryPirate: You won’t really find a motherboard with 12 SATA connectors, so you’ll need to look at getting a PCIe SATA expansion card.

            • @Shiroi Okami: Yeah, I know. My last one had 8, which is the most I've found. I did buy a card but it got misplaced in the last move.

False. Intel 13th and 14th gen chips have instability issues. 12th gen is on a completely different architecture and unaffected.

My bad, I thought it was 12th and 13th Gen. It's still worth avoiding Intel since they knowingly released and kept selling CPUs with manufacturing defects. When the issue came to light, they initially blamed motherboards. Later, after being confronted with proof, they admitted it was their fault. Even then, they tried to avoid honoring warranties until they were forced to do so.
