  • First time hearing about this thing. Seems kinda cool but I don't know how much our toddler would use it. Thanks for posting. I'll have to do some research.

    • Our 6yo and 2yo enjoy it.

6yo for music, books and podcasts. Finished wild robot, now minecraft

2yo knows how to operate it because because of the pictures and icons. A warning that you will have songs on repeat 😅

      • We already have songs on repeat all day. Our 4 yr old uses my old phone as his music player. He knows how to use Tidal but he plays the same stuff over and over.

        • what about for audio books?

Unless you have something like audiobookshelf set up, it keeps your progress

          • @impoze: I have something setup for myself on my NAS. Don't have many books on there yet. I guess I should go out and try to find some more audio books. Would be good for the toddler. Thanks for the reminder!

            • +1

@ozbs25: Definitely get audiobookshelf set up if you haven't already.

              • @impoze: Yeah I have that. I couldn't remember my login/password for a while and it took ages and ages to get back into the system. I've really only added stuff to it but I've never actually used it. Sadly it's the case for most of my stuff. Everything sits on the pile of shame while we look after our toddler.

                • @ozbs25: audiobooks are my go to while putting my 2yo to bed.

Have to wait until he falls asleep before escaping, but even before when he was smaller and have to rock them etc.

I was going to make a joke about the 4yo using Tidal but then a 4yo is the only age group that could actually hear the difference between that an an MP3.

I was sceptical when my wife wanted it, but it's been amazing for my toddler (3). He gets really into some of the stories, and it gives a little bit of a screenless breather when we're trying to eat.

      • We aren't really worried about screen time, for now at least. He has a set time and place for watching stuff and he pretty much sticks to it. He doesn't really ask to watch stuff outside of that.

Wow i'm in th same boat right now. My wife tells me she added something for the kids in the Amazon cart and when I went to checkout I gasped at the price of this thing.

        • +2

Honestly, for the way my toddler gets into the stories, and how much he enjoys some of the more calming ones (like the Sesame Street "Good Night World" podcast ones), it's been well worth the price for us! The other day at the shopping centre, he got overwhelmed by a bunch of crying kids and asked for the Yoto and his little bluetooth headphones, and then he just chilled out while listening to some Super Simple Songs. It's been a bit of a gamechanger for us, but as for anything with kids, YMMV

I did the same thing when my wife bought it……
After 2 months I am a convert. My kids love it. And my son wakes up in the morning excited for the next “daily yoto”.

  • +2

Our 2 year old loves the yoto. Get some blank cards and you can read your own stories or put your own songs on them.

    • You’ve sparked my interest.

Can you tell me more about how you use the blank cards ..

      • +2

You upload any audio media into a playlist online and link it to a card.

        Like making a mix tape

        • Ok. Cheers for that

  • How do I get a referral link to use?

    • +1

Only when buying from Yoto direct

You can also get MiFare Ultralight EV1 cards on AliExpress, and use these in place of the (frankly expensive) MYO cards. I've used this listing twice and they work beautifully, but need a few extra steps to work with the YOTO.

Use NFC Tools on Android to format as 48b instead of 128b using the following custom command (has to be the first thing flashed on the card) A2:03:E1:10:06:00,A2:04:03:04:D8:00,A2:05:00:00:FE:00 Source

Create a playlist, link with an official MYO card, insert into the Yoto to download the playlist, then clone to your other card using NFC tools. Source

A bit of stuffing around, but brings the price down dramatically (up to $5AUD per MYO card in the Yoto store down to about $1.25 AUD per card).

    • Only problem with that is if someone uses the official card in a different Yoto it removes it from the other yoto.
I.e. the unique ID can only be on one yoto at a time.

      • Are you talking about the NFC card unique ID?

        • Each card is just a “link” to storage in AWS. That link is unique so only 1 yoto can cache it at a time.
So 2 “cloned” cards brings used at the EXACT same time won’t work. If there are heavily used then the content will need to be continuously redownloaded onto the devices as it “swaps”.

          • @internet-stranger: You are linking your own MYO playlists so why would there be 2 of the same.

If you have multiple devices, sure, you would need multiple MYO cards and either library rotation system or duplicate the playlist

            • @impoze: Yea. So if you reload the official yoto card with a new playlist, the cloned card no longer works with the original playlist. At least in my experience

              • @internet-stranger: shouldn't be, since that's how all of my cards are set, using the same YOTO MYO card.

Did you let it finish downloading before cloning it and using the third party cards?

                • @impoze: Ok. Did some testing. Only 32gb of space. So it will “push out” the oldest unused. Since my kids love swapping cards every 5 mins it’s pushed old content out.

    • You are a god, thank you!

    • I've followed these instructions while prepping a new yoto mini for a Christmas present and it has worked like a charm.

Thanks heaps for the detailed instructions. I couldn't find the full steps well laid out like your comment on any other websites

Do people recommend the mini or the full size version? For a 2 year old.

    • Depends on your use case scenario

    • The big one is good to start with.

The big screen and buttons are easier to use.

    • +1

We started with the mini because it fit into his hands better. The big one also has a bigger "screen" which we didn't want.

      • Could I ask if the mini also works as a bedside alarm?

        • yes, it can

    • r/moreyoto has a lot of resources too.
    • MYO Studio chrome extension is a must to speed up MYO playlist creation.
    • third party cases from Aliexpress/temu fit just like the original 'jackets' from Yoto.
    • 3D print card displays, stands and cases with strap anchors

Heard great things. Got two (one main and one mini) for my two daughters.

Best part is the grandparents who live interstate can record themselves reading books and send across for us to put on blank cards, and we can get them to put to the girls to sleep for once!
