Best Value TV Option for below $600

I got a friend who migrated to Australia recently and he is looking for a 55 inch plus TV and willing to spend up to 600 dollars.

The ALDI black friday sale has a 70 inch TV for 589 and Big W also has a budget brand 70 inch TV for around 600.

He also found some Samsung and LG 55 and 65 inch TVs from 2017-2019 ranges on FB marketplace for around 500-600 range.

Is he better off buying one of these 3rd tier brand new 70 inch 4k TV.
Or
Is he better off buying a 5+ years old name brand (Samsung, LG, Sony) TV.

My gut feeling is that it is better to buy the brand new as the technology has improved in the 5 years and he gets 1 year warranty for the piece of mind. But I thought to pick the brains of OZB TV gurus to get a better perspective.

Thanks in advance.

Buying a used TV is a risk, specially Samsung's which like to break.

Yeah my Panasonic plasma tv is still going strong after 13 years while family and friends tv's break down every few years including several Samsung's. Wouldn't take a risk on a second hand tv for a cent over $100.

      • hey @Pimpiticians 4 Life I have the same tv. I saw the sticker on the back the other date and it was manufactured November 2011. I'm in no rush for an upgrade when it works fine. I'm down to one HDMI port so I bought a switch box

  • I'm also looking for a TV around that budget.

Does anybody have feedback on this model:

    also this kogan model: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-55-qled-4k-tizen-smart-tv…

Also looking at IK2 and Fb marketplace

  • I tagged along with a friend shopping for lower priced TVs. If you're wholly non-discerning then just buy online at your preferred price point. The thing I found surprising is how awful (my subjective view) the cheap ones are so would recommend testing with your own eyeballs.

Aldi and anything from Big W are trash.

$638 for a 2024 55 inch Hisense. At least you get a 3 year warranty.

$522 for a 2024 50 inch Hisense if your friend's budget can't stretch that far.

Or you can go with TCL

$582 for a 2024 50 inch TCL (also has a 3 year warranty and comes with Google TV)

There are other brand new TVs from budget brands with much longer warranties.

    Linsar 60" $499. 3 year warranty.

    Chiq 55" $496. 3 year + 2 year bonus warranty.

    Chiq 65" $594. 3 year + 2 year bonus warranty.

TCL and Hisense are usually better than these budget brands if he is OK with a smaller TV for a higher price.

Hisense 55" $588 using SAVEBF. 3 year warranty.

If a long warranty isn't needed and he just needs something temporary, this one is very cheap with good reviews:

    Ffalcon 55" $399. TCL's budget brand.

  • With Telstra TV Box no longer working, does anyone have a recommendation for a device that runs Kayo smoothly?
The app on TCL tv runs like garbage.
    Thanks in advance.

    • There's a deal for fire stick 4k right now, you can side load android apps

    • Apple TV 4K will run Kayo perfectly.

  • I'd say best option is a used Panasonic Plasma TV you can grab for peanuts on marketplace. 4k resolution is a much smaller factor than people realise, contrast ratio is king.
Plasma still holds up better than many many current LED tvs.

Otherwise save up for an OLED, it's really worth it. I bought a used LG C1 couldn't go back to LED now.
