      • Thank you - that did not work either. I even tried creating a new appleID as AUS and that gets stuck at the privacy screen and you're unable to continue.

What am I doing wrong here?

  • Worked great thanks! I encountered some extra steps when doing this on an ipad.

    • In the AppStore on the ipad, I had to re-enter my indian account credentials prior to adding the voucher code (which I bought via an incognito session on my pc).
    • After signing up for the sub in in the youtube app on my ipad, I was redirected back into the appstore app and promoted to enter indian address details - so I used the random address generated earlier and had to google up a better random indian phone number generated.

    Other than that all good.

  • Tried to buy apple gift cards using amazon link but getting this error

    Looking for something?
We're sorry. The Web address you entered is not a functioning page on our site.

    • I've bought 2 x 500 rupees GC via Amazon India in the last 30mins Link to Amazon India Gift Cards - both worked, received within a couple mins and redeemed successfully.

  • +2

Confirming I got this working as of tonight (07/01/25).

In addition, after got it all working, if you are on Microsoft/Windows there is a way to redeem the Indian App Store Gift Cards when you install Apple Music App and log into your newly created Apple account. I initially got a 500 rupees GC and reactivated YT Premium, I've then redeemed another 500 rupees GC and added it to my account via Windows Apple Music App for the next month of YT Premium when it hopefully automatically renews for another month.

Edit: Just to add I created a new digital Wise card this afternoon and used this for the purchasing on Amazon.

  • Anyone else only getting an individual offer for YT premium? With no family option at all through the YT app?

    • +1

Do you have an existing family setup via Google?

      • Yes, I do!

        • What was your previous YT Premium through? Apparently some people have reported similar and they were previously on Pakistan - see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16084451/redir

I was previously on Ukraine payment method (family was AU based), it expired/was removed on 5/01, so followed the new Indian Apple ID method, and was able to select family premium. I made no changes to the family accounts and left it as it was.

          • @shiprekt: Reading through the comments I think this is the key.

You still log into your existing YT account (with your family already set up) to redeem the Indian giftcards, some posters I think were logging into YT using the burner email (used to create the Indian Apple ID) which would then run into problems connecting to AU based family. Is that right?

Google is set to cancel my premium subscription next Tuesday so I'm reading up and getting ready to go through all these steps…

            • @avivadz:

You still log into your existing YT account (with your family already set up) to redeem the Indian giftcards,

I think you might be slightly confused. The Indian gift cards are not redeemed to a YouTube/Google account (it's not possible to redeem Apple credit to a YouTube/Google account).

You are redeeming those gift cards to your (possibly newly created) Indian AppleID.

some posters I think were logging into YT using the burner email (used to create the Indian Apple ID)

It's not possible to use an AppleID to login to YouTube. However, you might be using the same email address for both your AppleID and email address (e.g. [email protected] could be your AppleID, and you could also be using [email protected] as your Google/YouTube account)

which would then run into problems connecting to AU based family

Possible. But running into problems connecting/adding members to an AU-based family would have absolutely nothing to do with the AppleID and only the country that your Google account is set to, which is typically set by the "Payment Profile" of the Google account. If you have multiple payment profiles on your Google account, I believe the country of your family profile will default to the very first payment profile, which for legitimate accounts, would typically be the country of your IP address when you first created either your Google account, or the country of the IP address when you first added a payment method to that account.

It's a little complicated, but this is what I have gathered from my pretty extensive experience messing around with numerous Google accounts for YouTube Premium in various countries.

    • Yep and I haven't found a solution

      • Hmmm, I've udpdated iOS overnight, and will check again today if any change. Funny how if I even try to click through from a google search for 'family youtube premium' it states that the offer not available.

FYR been using Indian VPN for the entire set up on a iphone - successfully loaded the gift card on and have balance.

        • Ok, for some additional context, I actually have a few YT Subscriptions (all family plans). I have one that was previously subscribed via Nigeria, another one via Pakistan, and an older one that's been inactive for a while (6 mths+) from Turkey.

In all three cases, I was not offered a family membership. However, on one other account (separate to the three above) that was previously subscribed to Nigeria, I did get offered to subscribe the Family plan and I took it.

          So I really haven't noticed a trend.

          • @illumination: Hooley dooley, how long were you able to get roughly with the other accounts via Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey before having them cancelled?

            • @shiprekt: They all got cancelled around the same time, which is around the same time that all the other Ozbargainers reported they started receiving emails notifying them that YouTube believed they had not legitimately obtained YouTube Premium (or however it was worded…)

I did not notice any particular trend of subscriptions from certain countries lasting longer. Although, I have noticed that I still seem to be getting charged for the Nigeria subscription but I've kinda lost track of which account… so it's possible I've still got an active YouTube Premium subscription active in Nigeria and I just don't know which account it is, cause I got a transaction notification from my bank in the last few days LOL

  • Thanks bro, just get it done last night and the family plan seems go up to INR389 instead of 299. But still save a big bucks. Some people said need VPN but actually don't need it. Everything back to normal now lol.

    • +1

The extra is the "Apple Tax" which they charge on their platform.

  • I was getting the error "you need to make your purchase in India" when trying to subscribe to premium through the youtube app. It would only show the premium subscription price in AUD so I couldn't use my itunes credit. I updated the OS on the old IPHONE 6 to 12.XX and have now lost access to youtube app, which "requires OS 15 or later." Unless anyone has any ideas, I consider myself defeated and my Indian credit wasted. Thanks anyway everyone.

  • -1

Looks like it requires a UPI id now

  • I just did this and it worked with no problem. Only thing I forgot was to add a few others in my family group, so now they're getting the message that they're not in the same country.

If I let the one month with premium lapse, will I then be able to invite them to my family, then renew?

    • I had the group created before I paid and did the steps

  • +1

Looking to pick up an old iPhone/iPad to try this method, is there a minimum model I need to get my hands on or will any work?

  • I said I'd give up and take defeat like a man, but I just can't let it go… Did anyone get around the issue of the premium subscription only showing in AUD and the error 'you much purchase in India"? Is it to do with using an old iphone 6 that cant update to the latest youtube ver ?

    • +1

You need a newer iPhone…didnt work on my iPhone6 but worked on iPhone X for me.

Any iPhone that can install current Youtube from Appstore should work.

    • See if one of your friends is willing to lend you their phone for 5 minutes. Offer them to be part of “family” to be more convincing.

  • anyone know what to do when it says "While the requested product is available in Australia, you need to purchase from India since your Itunes Store account is set to India? thanks in advance :D

  • +1

It took some time and effort but it's finally working for me!! Thanks for the post OP. Make sure to read through the comments before you try it out…

  • word of warning doing it the family membership way. I've had a family membership for awhile now. the only way to setup this new one on apple was to delete my original google family. this would release the other accounts to join another family group. The problem however is when they all were invited from the new account, google didn't let me as it says "u can only switch once per 12 months". the thing is i've never switched yet this popped up. i've emailed support to see what else they can do for me. currently all my family member accounts are now in limbo either have to buy AUD ones or have to setup single india ones for each person

  • For those that managed to get the Apple gift cards to work, was it a family membership shared among multiple Google AUS accounts?

  • +14

Thanks! Had a go today, following cliaz steps https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16117572/redir and can confirm it worked.

Here's what I did, no VPN needed:
    1. Create a burner gmail account
    2. Setup Indian Apple ID using gmail account created in step 1. Use AU phone number for verification.
    3. Purchase Apple Store gift card from Amazon India using my Amazon AU account
    4. In the IOS device, delete Youtube app
    5. Login with Indian Apple ID to the IOS device
    6. Open AppStore, redeem gift card purchased in step 3
    7. Download Youtube app. This is where I got 'This Apple Account has not yet been used in the iTunes Store' and had to do 'Complete Your Apple Account' steps. I was able to enter an Indian address for billing address and complete the verification
    8. Open Youtube app, login using my existing gmail account (with existing family already set)
    9. Renew YT premium subscription. Done!

    Hope this helps!

    • Thanks, this is clear. I'm gonna follow this on Wednesday when Google cancels my current subscription.

Just one question on step 1, is it right the burner account doesn't have to be a gmail account? Since this is only used to create the Apple ID and nothing else.

    • Followed this exactly. Worked no problems!

    • Thanks also - worked perfectly today after my previous premium membership abruptly got cut last night

  • excellent guide and workaround!

how much $ is everyone buying for itunes india? I only did enough for 1 month and it worked but now realise I should top up otherwise I'm going to have to keep buying manually each month or so. I remember the turkish oldubil app shutting down plugging the netflix hole and having to quickly find a way to burn that money so a little cautious lol.

    • +1

I would suggest maybe 2-3 months? Not too much in case this method gets bombed and there's no way to use the Rupees in your fake Apple account.

Just set a reminder to top up.

    • I loaded 600inr but I saw someone putting 5000 so it depends how mch you want to risk

      • Were you charged the 4% transaction fee?

  • Worked perfectly for me as specified in the detail. Thanks

  • arrrrrghhhh, just spent nearly an hour setting this up and got the below error.

set up the india accounts using burner google/apple accounts and invited my main google account and the wife's google account to the family

You're already in a family group
You can only be part of one family group at a time.

worked fine for the wife but it won't let me delete my family group. i removed the wife from it and transferred the kids to her as well but they don't transfer immediately. any ideas??

this is such a stuff around!!

  • Does anyone have the issue when an account in the family suddenly have the premium removed even though other accounts in the same family group still have it?

  • also FYI if anyone wants to use crypto to pay for this you could use a service like bitrefill where you can buy an Indian Apple Store & iTunes gift card to cutout the Amazon middle man

    • +2

cut out the Amazon middle man

Would you not just be swapping the middleman..?

    • You have to buy in increments of 4000 though and their exchange rate looks weird. Are you sure you don't get charged a fee?

      • last time I checked their spread wasn't too bad .. for a service like this there will always be a spread between what they buy for and market rates so they don't charge a fee

  • Done today
Everything worked almost flawlessly. Loaded a years worth of Apple gift cards to my Apple account
    Thanks OP

(I had YT Premium purchased from within India for a couple of years before the payment changes brought by Indian govt)

  • Set this up successfully a month ago, however subscription didn't auto-renew. Indian Apple ID also got locked.

    • +1

      Seriously?

So are you saying that Apple is doing the locking then? Why would they do that?

Coz technically YT does not know you have non-Indian credit card since its brim billed through Apple.

      • Well what happened was I noticed the sub lapsed and did not renew, even though I just got the “sub will renew” email a few days prior. Naturally I tried to login but failed, though I’m 100% sure the password is right. Clicked forgot password and got the account locked notice. Says it’s in review and will take 1 day.

It’s only happened to me though so no reason to panic just yet.

        • did your account get unlocked? mine just did the same thing.

          • @BilkZwang: Nope, access denied similar to @Bob Lou. Lost around $20 of gift card balance too.

        • Got the same problem. The second day, got an email from apple:
We have reviewed your request, and access to your account () has been denied
I still have around Rs 800 in the account.

  • Cheers OP. Got it to work after some initial hiccups. Loaded 600inr for next few months. Afraid of putting more just in case they close the account. I think the only hassle is when logging of the regular apple ID all the apple pay cards are also removed. Takes time to get them all back on again.

    • Nothing will get removed if you only logout from "Media and purchases"

      • Oh i see. Did not realize that. Will try next time. Thanks

  • Sorted it today finally. A few issues along the way that were sorted after reading the comments. Loaded with 389x6 INR. Thanks OP!

  • Got it working, thanks all!
Followed Shika's post and after getting stuck at the Apple Account has not been used in the iTunes store, I managed to get past it by going to Settings>Your Name>Media and Purchases which prompted it to come up with the screen to enter the billing address details.

  • +1

Argentina method got cancelled last night. Got this one working now. Want to add that I had family account from the previous setup same email - did not change anything. Login youtube on the India Apple Id setup on the IPAD. Using the same family gmail i had before and subscribe without any issue. Thanks ops

  • +1

It worked ! Thank you so much.

    Some comments

    1. Set up an Indian Apple ID(account.apple.com) using your AU mobile number to verify.

    2. Login into an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, using an Indian Apple ID by going to settings > Your name > Media and purchases.

    3. Buy Apple gift cards from Amazon India(amazon.in) using your AU amazon account.

this link is great - it takes you right to the AMAZON PAY "App Store Code" section where you can buy Apple Credit.
It's not what I was expecting when I was thinking of buying "gift cards"
I wanted enough credit for a Family Plan for 6 months, so I bought R2500

    1. Enter an Indian address (make sure indian address is selected) and use an international fee free card. Then load gift cards to your Apple ID.

As far as I can tell, there is no need to enter an Indian address into Amazon ? It never asked me for an address
BUT - In order to add the Apple Credit, the App Store for the Indian Apple ID asks for the address.
I did add an Indian address to my Amazon address book and made it the default, but was it really necessary ?

    1. Open up Youtube app(apps.apple.com) - head to account (right bottom corner) > settings (right top corner gear icon) > purchases and memberships
  • +1

I created a new account and went through the above steps. When i got to the part where i subscribe to YouTube Premium Family i got an error saying that my "Family Manager"needs to do it.

I removed the account from my family, signed up to YouTube Premium Family then added them back in, but it doesn't seem to be sharing the family plan with the rest of my family group.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

  • Thanks OP. I just tried the steps and it is working. Now I have moved my family from Pakistan to India!
Two places require Indian addresses in my experience:
    1) when purchase the gift card via Amazon IND(I need to register the account as my AU account does not automatically work), an Indian address is required for "delivery".
    2) when finish the subscription via Apple ID, an Indian address is required to complete the profile.

And I used this site for the fake address.

    Some tips:
    1) after switching the Apple ID to the India one via the Media and purchases option, I just logged on to my normal Youtube account as the Family manager to make the purchase.
    2) I did invite the new India account to the family but I am not sure whether this is actually required, given I did not need to subscribe the service using the new account.
    3) I also get a 2-month free offer for the Apple TV after I redeem the Apple GC. And I can confirm that it is working on my LG TV.
    4) It took around 15 min for the Apple GC to be delivered.

During the days without the Premium plan, the only thing that I cannot find a proper solution for is streaming the music to Android Auto or ios CarPlay and interact with the UI on the car display.(Most solutions online can only do play and pause)
I can use Russian VPN to watch Youtube without Ads on mobile.(I got my Pure VPN via previous deals for free)
I can use ublock to watch Youtube without Ads on PC.
I can use Brave browser to listen to Youtube Music in the background.

  • +1

Thank you OP, this worked awesome.

For me the step where they asked for my addy was when I went onto YouTube to select an Indian plan, then app store asked for it.

Used this Link here to input an Indian address, then just inputted by AU phone number (as don't have indian number).

Good luck guys - hopefully this is longer term for us LFG.

  • +2

Thanks OP and all others who have posted about their experiences and tips, I followed the instructions with these tips in mind and got my YT Premium renewed.

One hiccup was when logging into YT for the first time on wifey's unused iphone 8 with 1000 INR loaded to the new Indian ID, the Premium renewal options were all in AUD (i.e, $42.99 for family) which freaked me out (I even took the precaution of deleting the YT app before signing in with the new Indian ID and logged in on the reinstalled version from App Store).

However, after shutting down the phone and restarting, the second attempt in YT to renew showed all options in INR. Quite odd but so relieved it worked out. Family members have all reported receiving the "Welcome to YT Premium" email so happy days will continue for now!

  • Thanks OP. Confirming this still works
My premium flight to Argentine got expired. And straight away fly to India same day after buying some gift cards

  • +1

This one worked for me just now - no VPN needed, key point might be uninstalling YouTube prior to logging in India account - for step 7, fake address from here

  • Tried to get this working but not having much luck with creating the Apple account. Gets stuck when verifying 2fa code… receive the code but when clicking the button it does nothing.

  • +1

    Thank you!

Worked perfectly. My previous India subscription ended today, after about 5 years or so, I know it was coming, but forgot to was today and was so surprised to see an ad on YouTube.

As per other posters, I followed Shika's post no issue.

I just bought one month worth of credit, just in case, let's see how long this lasts.

    • I kept getting "You account cannot be created" error when creating Apple ID, did you get this?

  • +1

    Thanks!
Finally migrated from Argentina to India. After dealing with 1 day of Google Home and Chromecast advertisements it was enough.

Strangley I never had to enter any Indian billing address at any stage of the setup in either Amazon, Apple or Google accounts. Everything just worked.

  • Any way to avoid the 4% conversion from Amazon?

    • Open a digital Wise card and convert your AUD to INR, then when you pay in Amazon it will give you the choice to pay with AUD or the INR on your card. Select INR and all good; no additional fees as you're paying in the correct currency.

      • Wait I must have missed that option as I did not see it. Would a no foreign transaction credit card work?

        • It might, I'm not too sure sorry, my CC now has damn international transaction fees, so I didn't even bother trying it and opened a Wise account to bypass and hopefully make it easier should any other international deals come up similar to this.

Did the 4% conversion fee come up when you tried your no foreign transaction card? If so, maybe they Amazon themselves apply this to all transactions in different currencies?

Wise only issue was the damn KYC selfie process, took me a hour atleast to get the damn selfie process to accept my head.

  • So people are adding their real gmail to the Indian family membership? Is there no concern everyone attached to the family account ends up locked?

Thinking of making a secondary burner gmail address just for YouTube. Means losing all my YT history but I'd prefer that to a locked gmail account.

edit: ahh my YT is only showing $AU prices. Have I stuffed it? How do I use the gift card to pay for premium

  • Thank you @Pricebeat and all others who have contributed to this guide. I have successfully setup YT Premium using this method but was super easy. I had previously been paying TY direct via India for 4yrs until they clamped down before Christmas. I’m thinking if setting up a family subscription and migrating my sons account. What do I need to do with his Aus YT before inviting? Thanks.

    • Is the guide in the first post or is there an updated one?

  • Has any one had any auto-renewal issues?

    • Yes, my India apple account got locked.

      • Mmm, was your account loaded with INR and it didn't auto renew? I'm wary adding excessive INR to my new India Apple account if there is an issue here.

Any more info on what happened?

        • Yes, I still have around 800 INR in the account.
Didn’t receive any notification when apple closed my account. I found out by noticing ads on YouTube. I thought the renew was not successful because of out of credit, so I logged in the India apple account to check the balance. However I could not login on my phone, it kept showing me unknown error during verification.
I’ve seen this error when creating the account, so I tried to login on browser, then my account eventually got locked. I also got an alert saying that someone will review it, and it’ll take a day. Then the second day, I got an email saying your access request has been denied

          • @Bob Lou: I’m in the same boat, lost about 1200 INR because my account was locked and upon requesting access it was denied, OP may need to update description that this may happen at any given time

            • @citrusreduction: Definitely, I believe it’s locked by apple’s fraud detection service. So don’t use your main Apple ID(change account region to Indian) to do the trick, and maybe log out the Indian account after you set up the payment in YouTube app. I’ve seen many posts mentioned their iPhones got bricked because they cannot log out the locked account. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255701760?sortBy=rank
Just be aware there’s a risk you’d lost all you data in the locked account, and even the iPhone got bricked.

  • +2

It worked for me finally! Didnt read the post carefully, wasting an hour trying to purchase India apple 'gift card' on India Amazon which got cancelled multiple times. It is actually the App Store Code to purchase and OP has already provided a direct link to the page in the post. smh

  • +1

Hey is anyone having issue in creating an apple id? It keeps saying "cannot verify email address". I have never used this email to create an appleID before.

    • yes ive tried a few different emails and phone numbers with no luck

  • I already have a Google one on my main account with a family setup
Can I simply add the india account as a member or does it need to be the family manager ?

  • Does the burner Indian Apple ID / Gmail need to be the family manager?
Then I just add my usual account to keep YouTube history etc?

    • +1

No - The apple ID is created for payments ONLY. Everything else remains the same

  • So I was able to create a new account set everything up. I have also added my family onto the google family account and they have accepted. When i go onto the youtube App on my iphone, it still shows me aud pricing? I have already bought an amazon card and put in INR₹. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks!

    • you probably missed step 2. you'll need to login with your indian apple id for media and purchases.

      • Hey mate, I have done this and I can see a balance of 400 INR (which is the code I redeemed from Amazon). I have also made sure that my region is set to India. However when I log onto the yt app, it keeps saying I am in the Australia region?

I have all my family members on Google family. Do I have to change all my family members to also be indian region based?

        • Hey mate I've had a similar issue (posted a few days ago for no response sadly). I haven't worked out a way around it and given all the locked account stories popping up above us I'm somewhat accepting that the $10 worth of apple gift cards I loaded to that account is effectively gone…

        • However when I log onto the yt app, it keeps saying I am in the Australia region?

Reading through the thread, a possible solution to this is uninstalling and then re-installing the YT app.

  • For anyone whos previous overseas membership with Youtube was ended via the email notice for January, did you add that same account as one of the family members for the new setup? I'm wondering if they will also cancel a family membership if a previous overseas family leader becomes a family member on a new overseas Youtube account?

I'm thinking that this is probably all automated as a result of a report of checking on family accounts bought in another country, and not any actual ongoing human investigation.

    • I was with YT India direct and missed the price rise email confirmation so got cancelled. I used the iTunes trick and re-signed up, same email same family nothing changed just magically starts to work like it never ended.

  • I don't have any Apple devices, could this be done with a virtual apple device, using a dev environment?
