Thanks just bought 2 of these for 8TB storage for my Mac Mini. For less than $920 including Thunderbolt enclosure. VS Apple wanting $3600 for 8TB storage.
Hi can you share which TB4 enclosure you got please?
ACASIS 40Gbps
Thanks! The dual bay version? how come it's under $120?
@omygodde: I took advantage of Amazon 10% off. Aliexpress coupon sale is on in 2 days. There are cheaper brands on Aliexpress too for $90.
@Dollar Dreamer: I see, thanks!
@omygodde: Just make sure it is 40Gbps Thunderbolt certified. Aliexpress has a habit of putting the cheap option item first to get ahead of Google search algorithm.
@Dollar Dreamer: The acasis dual bay 40gbps bandwidth is shared between 2 ssd.. need to run raid 0 for max speed though.
@Dollar Dreamer: can you share link to the one you bought? Thanks
@Redsin: I didn't buy the enclosure yet, it's on Aliexpress, waiting for Aliexpress coupon discount sale in 2 days. See Ozbargain for coupon discount. There are cheaper brands for $90 also same speed and TB4 spec but I am still getting the ACASIS.
@Dollar Dreamer: Got it. is it the dual slot hub they needs external power?
@Redsin: yes.
I ended up getting the NewQ 40gbps enclosure from amazon.
Acasis is quite interesting but firstly I can't do external power, and secondly for 40gbps speed you have to run 2 ssds in raid 0.
In raid 0 if one ssd dies, data won't be recoverable from both ssds. Data loss is a concern for me.
@omygodde: I ended up with Maiwo K1717, fanless and seems ro run cool and good speed.
@Redsin: That's great. The NewQ is on the warm side, I put it on the mac mini and use mac mini as a giant heat sink lol.
I also got a Colorii MC40 on the way, should be cooler.
@omygodde: Mine is still on the way. Both ssd and enclosure. Currently running a slow wd black game drive. 10gbps on mac mini as usb3.2 gen2 speed is not supported on mac mini
@omygodde: Maiwo 1717 case arrived, well built and quite heavy as it is like from a block of aluminium.
SSD arriving Thurs so will be able to test
@Redsin: I've been using NewQ for a week, it's quite good no disconnections just a bit warm. Moved the Home folder and application folder to the ssd.
@omygodde: Thats great, what kind of speed are you getting with enclosure?
@Redsin: 3000+ for both read and write, like the reviews online.
@omygodde: Fantastic! Speed is similar to the internal ssd. External drive saving us from paying the Apple Tax!
@Redsin: Oh definitely, I ran Final Cut Pro and Bambu Studio from the external ssd, no issues at all.
@omygodde: Is that M4 or M4 Pro? I have my set up the same, running Application and home folder off the external drive.
@Redsin: M4, saved the pro budget to upgrade my PC lol.
@omygodde: I ordered both but i will return the unopened M4 Pro as M4 is good enough for me.
@Redsin: Haha, unless you can get a TB5 enclosure.
@omygodde: It will be pricey. No point paying so much more now, just upgrade in the future for M5 or M6 or whatever the chip then and i am sure TB5 would be standard and more affordable
@Redsin: tutorial fw v240229
https://www.jeyi.com/blog/how-to-upgrade-asm2464-firmware-ve…
latest fw version 2409013
https://www.station-drivers.com/index.php/en/component/remository/Drivers/Asmedia/ASM-2464-NVMe-USB-4.x-Controller-(40Gbps)/lang,en-gb/
firmware update for ASM2464PD enclosures, just in case.
@omygodde: Thanks. Is that for all brands of enclosures with ASM2464 controllers?
Running Maiwo 1717 under normal use, enclosure feels slighly warm with Mac Fan reporting around 46 deg. Running blackmagic design disk speed test, temp goes up to around 50 to 52. OK I reckon for a fanless enclosure. Speed is 3000+ for read and write.
@Redsin: Yes I was able to update both my enclosure with the fw tool.
Good to know, you can check your fw version first using the tool, see if there is an improvement after the update. It's also easy to downgrade the fw, I did it by accident lol.
@omygodde: Great. Thanks
Have yours shipped yet? Assuming you ordered 2 from Amazon Germany, via Amazon AU?
I ordered mine on 20th November at like 5:30am, so well before they went out of stock. But still not shipped yet.
my order has been dispatched. ordered on 21st but its sold by Amazon UK via Amazon AU
Thanks for letting me know. Was it dispatched only recently? Or within a couple of days of ordering??
Contemplating Cancelling now and ordering 990 pro from Amazon UK for same price…
@Shaun Prawn: dispatched this morning. so yeah maybe in batches.
@Redsin: Thanks. I will wait a bit longer then and see. It's just that it's been out of stock since that same day I ordered, so I was thinking maybe they oversold and are waiting to get more stock.
How does this compare to the Samsung 990Pro? Also any recommendations for a TB4 enclosure, to be used with a MacBook Pro M4?
I think specs for both are very similar. You can see comparison here - https://versus.com/en/samsung-990-pro-4tb-vs-western-digital…
The ACASIS 40Gbps one is pretty good. You might want to get the ones with a fan depends on your main usage.
own both, prefer this, as the samsung throttles here (and has heatsink). Also suffered this (drop out of bios) https://www.reddit.com/r/PcBuild/comments/18kir2d/samsung_4t… Which may not be an issue in an external enclosure 🤷
what's the risk to use it without a heatsink?
it overheats during transfers and shuts down. Put a heatsink on it
Shuts down? I assume you mean slows down?
thermal throttles (goes slower)
thanks got 1
Worth it to wait longer for black Friday price?
HODL
Thought so, there's no NVME's on good BF Amazon sales at the moment.
I would asume last years BF amazon sale wasnt that hot either?
Idk if i should buy 10% off amazon gift cards now or HODL for another retailer
two in the bush one in the hand.
Is it single sided for laptops?
pre sure its dual sided
Dual sided I have WD SN850X 4TB in a MAIWO K1719 TB4/USB4 USBC enclosure Work a treat full speed USB4, doesnt heat up too much
Another good enclosure is Wavlink ST-401C, I have a Fury Renegade 4TB (doublesided) in that enclosure, but this tends to heat up so have to put a heatsink pad on that I have 2 Samsung 990Pro $tb in 2 laptops as storage drives and the 990 pro 4tb is single sided
Thanks for clarifying. Do you know if there are any 8tb gen 4 single sided drives by any chance?
@bboybra: Not sure, but unlikely Im eyeing the SN850X 8TB if price goes down….
i am looking to get the maiwo enclosure but k1717. i ssume you dont need heat sink when using in an enclosure?
Is the K1719 with built in fan? Does it get loud and does fan speed vary with temperature?
Thanks
@Redsin: I dont have any heatsink installed just a small bit of thermal pad over controller near NVME connector. Never a problem heating up
Looking at K1717 it shows thermal pads and heatsink on maiwo website
K1719 came with an external USB powered fan, but it dont use it, and have no need to use it. The entire aluminum block gets warm, and I just place it ontop of another aluminum enclosure egWavlink ST401C to help dissapate heat
@glyptothek: Thanks for information. i think that reinforces thr K1717 purchase. i was deliberating over the Maiwo with built in fan. However i am worried that the fan noise would drive me nuts.
@Redsin: The fan isnt built in it just slot into the top of the case
These both have ASM4264PD chip, and it is easy to update firmware for PD chip see stationdrivers
@glyptothek: Yup your model and the k1695 comes with external fan. There is another model has built in fan.
https://www.amazon.com.au/MAIWO-40Gbps-NVMe-Enclosure-Fan/dp…
Cheaper in Aliexpress but seems that fan can be noisy according to one of the comments that I read.
Any benefits for just regular editing on an M1 Pro between this SSD and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/877667
This has double the endurance.
Product Name | TBW |
---|---|
BLUE | 1200 |
SN850X | 2400 |
Actual performance for editing, probably not even noticeable.
Insert Patrick Bateman look of surprise here.
I need 3-4 of them (ps5 and change over o/s plus secondary drives in multiple laptops) but its a bit extreme to get them all at once.

Do these Thunderbolt Enclosures work ok for single drives? Will it reach advertised speeds?
Can't speak for the enclosure. But I get 2gb/s writes with my 600gb swap file on mine, in the m2 port on the mobo with a heatsink.
Is it worth using this as main backup or storage drive?
from my research, this is similar to the 990 pro (please correct me if i'm wrong) so i'd say a main drive should be fine.
No you can get cheaper storage for that
Great drives but expect they’ll run 20-30 degrees hotter than other brands, unusable without a heat sink
$406.19 from UK via Amazon AU store
https://www.amazon.com.au/WD_BLACK-SN850X-Internal-Gaming-So…
Price has now dropped to $398.18 drom Amazon UK.
🤣
2TB available again.
Is it good to use gaming desktop ?
I have only m.2 500gb use atm
Anyone using this on a Macbook Pro?
Does this have Dram?
cant fault mine. stupidly fast
