K4? Man it's such hard work, used one for a year.. My only regret is not buying an automatic grinder sooner but I do miss the cooperative aspect of having a friend over for coffee: "here spin this until you're sweating."
Yes K4, i don't mind it tbh though I only make a coffee a day for mum
I use cordless drill/driver to grind coffee using the manual grinder :)
@Fvistr0: This, they also provided the rubber band to use with the drill
Kingrinder with drill!!!
I have the K6 and find, with a drill compared to grinding by hand, the extraction is way off. Seems like the drill introduces more speed and more variability to the consistency of grind.
Might just be my experience, but I have played with it a bit.
I'm in the same boat. If I didn't have the Kingrinder K6, I would have bought this. I do use it with a drill sometimes though.
Damn, that is a great deal for a great grinder
Different model.
My bad….trying to convince myself it wasn't a deal so I don't but it
Stack this with the 10% off gift card deal to get it for even cheaper!
or use the 1200 giftcard from JBHIFI that you paid 800 for.
btw, I noticed JB had a 1200 gift card flyer hanging from the ceiling, I didnt have time to look and wasn't in the market for more so didn't stop to check it out.
How did you get $1200 for $800? Thanks
DF54 is a better option if you can stretch the budget according to alternative brewing, I haven't seen Daddy Hoff's recent video.
The Hoff confirms this choice.
DF64 is only 2+x this price
DF64 ain't a DF54 though
Been using a DF54 for about 2 months and it’s excellent. I found it hard to get a good deal locally though. Kind of felt like I had to revoke my OzB membership when buying one.
Just out of curiosity, does this grinder not have a holder for the group handle?
No.In saying that I don't see why you couldn't dose directly into the portafilter using a funnel? I have never tried that however
It sounds messy. The automatic Breville grinder grinds the exact amount directly into the handle. Quick, precise and easy. I guess once you get used to this practicality, everything more than this sounds like a choir.
Can it do 'When Doves Cry'?
@BartholemewH: I scratched my head trying to understand what "When Doves Cry" comment was about. Then I read my comment and I realised that I have probably never had to write the word chore in my life. I'll see myself out.
I've got the Breville SGP and trying to research if this is a worthwhile upgrade for Christmas. Anyone done something similar? Or might be better to just save for a $400ish grinder
Check out the video in the description, James Hoffman reviews both the Baratza and the SGP.
As with a lot of James Hoffman reviews, they are well articulated but don't give a strong enough recommendation at the end.
I have the SGP myself and am actually not even using it at the moment (using a manual hand grinder instead), but saw nothing in this video to strongly justify replacing an SGP with the Baratza. The summary is along the lines of the SGP being not-bad, and the Baratza being maybe a little better but a lot louder. That doesn't sell it for me.
I was thinking this as an owner of a SGP. I'm of the position that it would be best to upgrade to something $400<
I have the Baratza Encore ESP and love it. But I don't think it would be a worthwhile upgrade from the Breville SGP.
Nah go for better grinder. DF54 probably
Yep agree. Spend some more for a bigger upgrade. DF54 on sale for $429 from alternative brewing atm.
Bit more expensive, but the Varia VS3 is also on sale for $495 from alternative brewing atm
DF54 $399 on Amazon from df64, minus 10% off gift cards
Not a great upgrade. Overrated cause it is good value in the US. While the Breville is not so good deal in the US compared to here.
The benefit of the smart grinder pro is that once you dial in your grind and does timings, it's set and forget. This is handy for households where not everyone wants to weight and measure doses every time you make a coffee.
Good deal. Side note, Lance Hedrick gave this grinder a score of A on his latest grinder tier list video

Thanks, but I'll wait to see what Hames Joffman has to say about it.
Go forth young grasshopper
Never mind, different model
I can't see the difference, can anyone enlighten me?
baratza encore is the original grinder, does not grind fine enough for proper espresso. The new model baratza encore esp can grind fine enough for espresso.
Great entry level grinder, highly recommend. Also Baratza is a reputable brand to me. They even released a video about how to upgrade the older model to the M2 burr set. I did it by myself at then and it was easy and great. My complaint is the noise it makes, but for this price nothing else really is quiet.
DF54 direct from DF64 Coffee

$399, less 10% from the Amazon gift card deal
What else can I grind in this contraption ;)
Black version now $277, white still $249
I still don't understand why almost all grinders grind by time instead of by weight. I bought the baratza sette 270wi and it's a game changer
Because you can just weigh the coffee beans beforehand if you’re single dosing? If not, you can still just get a cheap dosing cup and a scale and grind to the right grams. It doesn’t have to be time based.
Hopper based grinders had their time in the sun, the ones that still exist are largely older models or Italian brands. Most of the newer grinders are single dose.
As other people have mentioned, single dosing is the current hot thing for the home coffee aficionado. Which is a good thing, as people now have an easier time switching between beans and brew methods without having to worry about having multiple grinders or emptying out the hopper (like you would in a café).
Hoping for a deal on the Fellow Opus from James Hoffman's review. Similar performance, sounds quieter/better from the video and looks nicer imo.
like Fellow's design as well, it's a bit pricier than this one though
Unfortunately yea. Will hold out for a deal otherwise current pricing at ~$300 seems okay.
If I already have a Baratza Encore (non ESP), would it be better to purchase M2 Burrs ($63) or sell it and buy this? Wanting it for espresso
The ESP is a different grinder as is has the extra micro adjustments when you take the top grinding ring off as well as a variable "click" size once you get down into espresso range.
I think if you buy the M2 burrs, you won't be able to grind fine enough for espresso.
Thanks, bought one for $225 with the gift card, and I even have a dollar left over to spend on something else! 😎
The white model is 249 black model 277
after watching that review and doing some flat vs conical burr googling - i'm sold on spending a little more for the DF54 which is already discounted on amazon compared to other sites at 399$ - I got shown a 20 off first app order with FIRST20 - plus with 10% off amazon gift card, down to $341.1
any ideas if the black one is gonna go back to 249 anytime soon? or if the prices might go any lower next fri?
update: the black price is now 249 as well
I've been using the previous version (non ESP) for years, every day. I love it. This is a great deal on the only grinder you will need at home.
Waiting for a timemore 064s. Anyone have thoughts about this grinder vs 064s vs Mignon? I’ve seen all the reviews by lance and Hoffman but would love some personal experiences
Great deal, bought one.
Replacing my Kingrinder.
Yo coffee nerds, should I buy this or a kingrinder k6?
I make one or two cups of coffee per day. At the moment I just use a press. Occasionally pour over.
Potentially I could use a drill with the kingrinder.
ty
I would vote for the Kingrinder K6, but have not owned the Baratza. What I have owned however, is the Breville Smart Grinder Pro (SGP). I replaced that with the Kingrinder K6 and my observations are as follows:
* At one point or another, you will appreciate having a near silent grinder.
* Hand grinding is a decent amount of work - call it 40-50 seconds of effort. If you have more than one coffee a day or make coffee for your spouse/family/friends, it adds up quick.
* The K6 makes a better and more consistent cup than the SGP, which based on the James Hoffman review above, isn't far off the Baratza.
* You can use a drill with a hex attachment to grind the K6 which is cool, but seems to throw off the consistency of brew a little.
* Near zero retention on the K6, whereas the SGP and (based on the review video) the Baratza retain some. Really only matters if you are having less coffee (therefore retaining grinds that go stale by your next cup) or changing grind settings often enough that it inconveniences you (having some old grind and new grind mixed).
* The price of the K6 is hard to argue compared to these. You pay more for convenience of an automatic grinder but not necessarily quality of grind.
Based on the reviews, it doesn't look like hte Baratza is a notable step on my SGP, so I'll probably stick to my Kingrinder K6. I imagine the same is true of the Baratza vs. Kingrinder K6.
Df54 or 64?
Very nice if I didn't have a Kingrinder would buy this over the Breville.
