when did taking a car get so expensive used to be like $99

    • It's doubled since 2019. Pretty sure it was $220 one-way for the car last time (2023). Accommodation is cheaper than it was before

Geezzzas… $1000 bucks for a return trip for a family of three with a car AFTER DISCOUNTS! For short trips, flying to Tassie and renting a car works out much cheaper

    • I went to Tassie last year and really wanted to take my car and experience sailing on their ship. But it was more expensive than flying 2 adults + 1 child (return) and the rental car in Tassie. Maybe better for people with caravans as they save on accommodation too.

  • I was looking at heading over to Tasmania for a few days cycling via the ferry, does anyone know what the deal is with bikes on intercity buses? I couldn't find any info online (though maybe my google skills failing…). Half price on the ferry makes it tempting for a few days.

Yeah, I've been wanting to tour Tassie on my road bike too (I follow Richie Porte on Strava and the rides seem pretty epic). I've also struggled with the logistics… and have basically given up.

I just did a little googling and found this (maybe contact the author for more details?): https://bikepacking.com/plog/tasmanian-bikepacking-memoir/

We steeled ourselves and set off into the dark across the Tasman Bridge into Hobart to catch the 6 a.m. bus to Launceston. The buses in Tassie are great, the staff are jovial and friendly, and despite only having a “small” coach, the driver easily accommodated our overweight bikes. I can highly recommend both Tassielink and Kinetic (formerly Tas Redline). Just be sure to call them and book in advance, as they have limited bike space.

      • I would look at taking the gravel bike over with my saddle pack. But same issue, I was looking to go a couple of weeks ago but the total lack of info online made me give up as well.

Thanks for the link. Some more food for thought I guess.

  • Why are cars so expensive to take over?!???

    • +2

Because you can't drive it over the sea.
So they can charge you whatever they want.

It's classed as a "National Highway" and it's very heavily subsidized by the federal Gov, for decades it's been $99 each way for a standard vehicle but a year or so ago they jacked the prices significantly, I assume to help cover the cost of all the flickups with the new ships…. (we're paying $1.2 million per month to store one of our new ships in Scotland rather than store it here in Aus for much less money because the Tas gov don't want it sitting here unused advertising how badly they've screwed up, grrr)

          1. I agree it’s an epic stuff up and hopefully all involved got the boot. I mean - buy a vehicle - make sure the bluddy driveway can fit it before it’s delivered - how hard is that?

          2. Not sure that $1.2m is correct. Not sure it’s even in Scotland yet.

          3. They’re trying to lease it out over there which at least might make some money. That’s better than sitting unused here for 2 years.

yup, 2 kids 2 adults, accommodation for those 7 hours and we are looking at $2100 plus and thats with the discount , who in their sane minds takes this ferry when its way cheaper and easier to just fly and rent a car , I guess they want chumps to pay for their mismanagement .

    https://www.afr.com/companies/transport/tasmania-ferry-failu…

Well thats another aussie business that will soon go the way of the dodo . Unless the taxpayer cow is milked again as it will lead to "job losses " for hardworking " battlers", cue a current affair story about 3 kids , husband looking sad, and wife sniffling .

Well thats another aussie business that will soon go the way of the dodo

It's not really an "Aussie Business"… It's owned by the Tas Gov and heavily subsidized by the federal Gov ;) … It's not going anywhere, it's part of the National Highway system…. …

      • sure doesnt look subsidized to me , even with australia's, or Tassie's HCOL .

Well there you go, the Geniuses business plan is that some ppl will pay the extortionate fares, and the shortfall from the cratering revenue and patronage will be made up by the fed govt, aka the cow that can be endlessly milked. Short term, they cook the books to make the mismanagement look less bad.

  • and the fares are hugely subsidised by the government. such a rort.

There was. The COVID subsidy and others ended.
