Did they get bailed out yet or is this a lifeline money grab before they sink?

    • Noway gov will bail a gambling company

    • +1

bailed out by singapore investors with the sail of the brisbane casino and about $200m late last year as well. Still questionable whether it will let them survive or not.

      • +6

Pretty impressive to sail the whole casino

Surely, must have cost more than $200m

        • +3

oops sale. Shouldn't browse cruises while Ozbargaining.

The $200m is separate to the sale.

        • Depends how strong the winds are. If someone can move a queen sized bed on the top of their commodore, I'm sure you can sail a whole casino.

  • +18

Sounds a bit risky for a company on the verge of collapse.

    • +5

Im willing to put a bet on it :P

    • +5

      Bit of a gamble ey

  • +9

Risky! They are in serious trouble financially. Also, the place is souless with low employee morale. Id spend a bit extra and stay somewhere nicer for two nights

  • +14

The perfect deal for the gamblers they cater to! Roll the dice for if they collapse before your booking date!

  • +21

Back in the day when they were jupiters and had a monorail connecting to Oasis shopping centre, that was peak!

    • +11

      Monorail… monorail… monorail…

    • +1

Yup, I still got that "come out and play" ad on my head

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgS-IMfMuE4

    • +6

I still feel weird calling it anything other than Jupiters

    • yep it was awesome as my grandparents lived in the south pacific plaza next to the Oasis. The monorail was a quick way to the casino/pacific fair.

    • +1

The monorail was repurposed from Expo “88

  • +5

…you could do worse then this deal

What a way to sell this “deal”!

  • +3

I cancelled my upcoming booking in May for The Star as I booked through Luxury Escapes as I reckon you'd get nothing back if they went under

  • +3

    Only book for tonight…..

Why support a dodgy casino company with a history of fraud and non compliance? They should've had their casino licence taken away years ago.

    Hope they go bust

    • +15

All casinos are dodgy and fraudulent. Small and big business to varying extents too - they just haven’t been caught yet.

      • +1

Yep, so, so many businesses have expat and overseas management that view local compliance as a joke to be ignored.

    • +2

It’s a valid point. Most muppets have no idea about the harm done because places like the star facilitate money laundering.

Organised crime, large scale drug supply, corruption. The list goes on. All made much easier due to money laundering. Wouldn’t expect the average ozbarganer to understand that though. So have my upvote good sir

  • +1

I didn't realise the Gold Coast Star was also in trouble - I haven't kept up with specifics lately but thought Brisbane was the only one I trouble?

    • +7

The Star as a company is in trouble.

      • Struggling to understand why. Aren't they taking money off gamblers?

Then why are they in trouble financially? Is it because of fines for non-compliance?!

        • repeated fines for non compliance and corruption, the crackdown on money laundering also directly hurts their bottom line as less criminals pumping money through them. Add it huge cost blowouts at recent developments. lots of new rules in various locations about how much people can gamble etc etc. basically they are hemorrhaging on just about every front.

          • @gromit: So you’re saying those financial penalties that don’t mean anything to large corporations are actually working?

        • -3

Australia is so over regulated that not even a casino can turn a profit. Country is drowning in red tape.

          • @Koppeldread: yeah its horrendous how we don't allow criminal enterprises to continue to thrive off corruption and crime and even more disgusting that we punish them for their transgressions, oh the humanity.

    • +5

It’s the whole star group in trouble. They over invested in the new Brisbane casino and building new towers on the Gold Coast.

      • +2

Interesting! I didn't realise it was the whole group! Thanks for the context, maybe we'll avoid this one then just to be safe

      • Greedy, just like a bad gambler haha

      • Dont even know how they were allowed to build that monstrosity and its own bridge in Brisbane when they were already in the shit

        • +1

They only own 50% of the Brisbane complex and more than likely need to hand that over to get themselves out of trouble.

I walk past everyday and just think how ugly it is. Especially since the old one was awesome.

          • @jacobb: Ah right that makes abit more sense then. Yeah the old treasury was cool

  • +2

They not going under yet… they got few options to either sell brisbane etc

  • -2

    Didnt this place just open?

      • +6

        Wrong city.

          • +2

@Mokej: You're talking about a specific hotel. Not the company.

Your logic is like saying "Hilton Hotel opened years ago" when talking about a brand new hotel opening in a new location.

  • Looks to be weekdays only and no weekends on the deal

  • +2

Stayed there once on a good promo. The base rooms there are kind of terrible. Walls/doors made of cardboard with a 2cm gap at the bottom. When anyone passes by, you can hear their breathing and your floor sink with their steps.

    • +1

Well if that isn’t a shining example of why to stay elsewhere…

  • There is no beach left on the Gold Coast!

  • Unless the deal includes weekends, it's not a deal. I've stayed at Meriton Broadbeach for 3 days midweek for $540. I

    • It does but depends on how many days you stay i just check april 8-13 it was 999 which is 250 a night including a Friday and a Saturday night

I'm not saying it is 'ultra' cheap but breakfast and $50 off restaurants daily is fairly good

      • These dates coincide with interstate school holidays. Barring school holidays gold coast hotels are fairly empty during the week and fill up quickly during weekends.

        • Id imagine with the beach damage from Alfred the Gold Coast will be quiter this school holidays so tou probably can fund better value at the same time the breakfast and 50 bucks of dinning is decent i mean a good buffett breakfast can easily be 40-70 per head alone in melbourne im not sure what it is like in Gold Coast

With that said Melbourne is a rip off for most things coffees are like $6-7 in a lot of places now

          • @Trying2SaveABuck: Coffee at $7 ($4.39 USD) is still extremely cheap on an international level. You'd struggle to buy a better coffee anywhere cheaper than Melbourne internationally.

            • +1

@OzzyBrak: The US is cheaper on average…. that's if you can stomach the swill they serve up as coffee. We are really only cheaper than some of the very expensive european locations.

              • @gromit: For sure. Not to mention one serving is typically enough to feed two over there.

  • +1

Trying to get funding before going bankrupt and running away with your money

  • +1

Can’t you just do a chargeback with your credit card if they go broke?

    • If they go broke they are not there to pay you whether it is a credit charge back or cash in person.

      • That’s not my understanding of how charge backs work. The bank reverses the transaction, especially in the case that you say service was not delivered.

  • +1

They won't fold and the governments won't need to bail them out. I became a shareholder when I seen how much trouble they were in. When you see people pumping over 28 million to increase their stake in a business and firms like JP Morgan also increasing their stake, all while the business is bordering on becoming insolvent, you should be taking notice. Will be interesting to see what the share price opens up at after the trading halt ceases.

    • 11c buy more

      • If i'm lucky enough to get them at that price again, for sure I will be.

    • when I seen how much trouble they were in

Sorry bud can’t take you seriously when you talk like this

  • Jupiters! They kept my expensive thongs

  • +2

This place is a dump now. Stayed at the Grand a few months ago. Run down rooms, mould in the pool and tired facilities. Lucky I didn't have to pay. I'm sure there are better places to go for similar prices on the Gold Coast.

    • +1

yep far better places on the Gold Coast, however for the price and proximity to Pacific fair this aint a bad deal, just don't bother with the grungy casino.

    • Correct…same experience last year there…

  • I'd say they've had a fair few cancellations from old cyclone Alfred as the beaches are fairly rooted, probably be plenty of other better places to stay on the coast
