That one involves the intentional killing of sheep for the D3 and the intentional killing of other animals for the capsules. Much higher unit cost.
Sheep aren't killed to get Vitamin D3. It's sourced from the lanolin in their wool. Here are the steps taken to get it…
- Depending on the breed, healthy sheep will produce from 1 to 14 kilos of wool each year.
- Wool is sheared from mature, live sheep.
- Crude lanolin is extracted from the wool using a scouring process, during which the fleece is washed in hot water with a detergent.
- Crude lanolin undergoes a saponification process; this separates the fatty component which is removed via centrifugation, from the ‘unsaponifiable’ component, known as ‘lanolin alcohols’. These undergo further steps of saponification and separation to increase purity.
- Crude cholesterol is extracted from lanolin alcohol using solvent washes and / or column chromatography.
- The crude cholesterol undergoes a series of further solvent extractions, washes and drying until it is extremely pure and crystalline. This purified cholesterol has been assessed as being fully compliant with the quality required for pharmaceutical manufacture by the European Directorate for Quality of Medicines.
- Purified cholesterol is then taken through a four-step chemical process to make 7-Dehydrocholesterol, this is otherwise known as ‘pre-Vitamin D3’
- Next, the pre-Vitamin D3 is irradiated to produce Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol); this is the same reaction that is used by human skin to manufacture the vitamin from sunlight. Finally, the pure crystals of Vitamin D3 are used to make the stabilized product forms that can be used to manufacture dietary supplements and other end use applications such as foods and beverages.”
See, no animal died.
All sheep in agriculture are killed when they are "spent" - the end of their usable life, in the case of merinos when they produce less wool than their younger cousins - and turned into meat, if not for your cans of cheap stew then for pet food, and skins for your uggs.
Same for dairy cows. Same for pretty much all domesticated animals.
These economies are all already factored into their production from before breeding to after the slaughterhouse.
Unless you have been advised by your doctor to take such a high dosage of vitamin D3, you should avoid taking these. Look for a brand with a lower dosage as the recommended daily amount of vitamin D is 400 international units (IU) for children up to age 12 months, 600 IU for people ages 1 to 70 years, and 800 IU for people over 70 years. Too much vitamin D3 will result in the build-up of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia).
Dr Fauci (US CDC) takes 6000 iu a day. D3 is only toxic in extreme doses < 25k and up.
Steve Gibson did some good research:
https://www.grc.com/health/vitamin-d.htmDr Anthony Fauci never worked for the CDC, he ran the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) before becoming a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
I'm aware that Dr Fauci takes D3, as I myself have done since 1996 (when I was diagnosed with D3 deficiency) but I can find no record of him saying that he took 6,000 IU per day. Also, linking to Steve Gibson's (a software engineer not a doctor) site doesn't give validity to what you are saying (although I have a lot of respect for Steve as a software engineer and I've been a Spinrite owner since 1991). Have you read what the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Health or even the NIH have to say on the matter? If you have actually read what Steve Gibson says on his site (since you linked to it), he states "Because Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is so potent and fat soluble, the capsules are tiny, filled with olive oil, and easy to swallow. The label instructs to take one 5,000 IU capsule every three days, for an average daily dosage of 5000/3 = 1667 IU/day." That's far closer to the figures I have quoted that come from respected sources.
The Mayo Clinic is known to be shady. Just look at their fake "research" linked to Vitamin C, when they used orally administered doses as opposed to intravenously administered doses as Pauling…
Being a Spinrite owner adds nothing to your claims.

The K2 activates osteocalcin to mitigate the risk of hypercalcemia
You need to update your knowledge on this topic. Many many studies do not show issues as you've described.
Isn't Liposomal Vitamin D3 (5000IU) + Vitamin K2/MK-7 (100mcg) 365 Softgels $32.18 better value, which workouts as 8.82¢ each vs OP's 15.55¢?
