OzBargainers' "Game of The Year" for 2024

TGA has just released their Game of The Year candidates. As we have done it last year, I am wondering what's OzBargainers' Game of the 2024?

Vote on existing options, or suggest games or game expansions released in 2024 to be part of the poll. Poll expires on 12 Dec, when TGA releases their winners.

    Suggested Concord (Video Game)

Here's my suggestion — Concord. Didn't get a chance to play it, but definitely one of the most talked about game in 2024 :)

    • +1

The candle which burns twice as bright, burns half as long.

      • +3

In that case, Concord must've been like a bloody artificial sun on Earth, given how some of the promotions for the game ran longer than the actual game itself.

    • Saw it in the poll, never heard of it so had to look it up and was left wondering why the hell you suggested it… (this was all before getting to the post comments, mind you)

    • How about Dustborn?

  • +3
Suggested Warhammer 40000: Space Marine 2

    Brothers, vote for the Emporer

    Suggested Stellar Blade

anime waifu money printing machine go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

…otherwise, Balatro would be my next pick. Even better now it's on IOS. Getting off the toilet and both legs having pins and needles after a 2 hour toilet gaming session at work can be a little brutal though

    • +3

Would have been more popular if not PS5 exclusive but had a PC simultaneous release.

    Suggested Animal Well

My vote's for Astro Bot, but Animal Well is a very close second.
Seriously though; what a snooze-worthy year for GOTY contenders compared to last year's nominees:

    • Baldur's Gate 3
    • Alan Wake 2
    • Super Mario Bros. Wonder
    • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
    • Resident Evil 4
    • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
    • I seriously don’t get the hype around Astro Bot. Are people that hard up for something to do.

I look forward to the day I can play it for free.

Are people that hard up for something to do.

You can't comprehend people having different tastes? It's absolutely one of the best 3D platformers of the last 10 years, even rivalling some of the 3D Mario games, although admittedly not quite as good as Super Mario Odyssey.

And if it cost $30 I’d totally agree, but it’s a $90 game with about 15 hours of content.

It has nothing to do with not being able to understand that people have different tastes. It has everything to do with the completely disproportionate amount of hype on the internet. Anyway apparently it didn’t sell particularly well, presumably because a lot of people made the same calculation I did.

          • +2

            @CascadeHush:

but it’s a $90 game with about 15 hours of content.

I have to disagree with the sentiment of what you're saying there. Game devs nowadays are incentivised to artificially extend playtime of their games, because then people will feel like they're getting their "money's worth". The reality is, the way they do that is to slow everything down and build in repetitive tasks and monotonous gameplay loops, where you end up repeating the same crap over and over again ad nauseam.

I've played a bunch of games over the last couple of years that I invested 20-40 hours into and end up burning out on because of this (eg. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth & Alan Wake 2 immediately come to mind), so I crave short and sweet gameplay experiences, and Astro Bot delivered perfectly - every level felt meticulously crafted and unique and there wasn't a dull moment. I want more games like that, and I'm willing to pay full price for them.

            • +2

@mboy: Agree completely. 15 hours is just about the perfect length for a AAA game for me. I loved the first 3 Uncharted games that ran about 8-10 hours more than the 4th one that ran about double that length.

Way too much artificial bloat in modern games.

Astro Bot is a fantastic game! Lots of fun, runs flawlessly, some decent replayability, some harder levels for added challenge.

      • I am on the same boat.

It's a 3d platformer that IMO plays on people nostalgia for these kind of games, PLUS the novelty of the playstation-related items in the game.

…but I've grown out of these kind of games. Too childish.

  • Suggested Helldivers 2

Helldivers II: Wasnt this released this year? I want to buy a PS5 just to play it… but I heard it's coming to xBox one day, but the PS5 community for it has all but dropped off…

  • +1

Well I guess I'm officially retired from gaming because I haven't played any of the current suggestions :(

    • One of us… one of us…

  • Suggested Dragon's Dogma 2

    This is probably the one.

  • Civ IV

    • +2

Why not. If it was a person it would be old enough to vote now.

  • Suggested Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero

Black Myth: Wukong by far and also Sparking Zero

Otherwise if we're to include Early Access (I don't think Early Access or DLC's should be 'games of the year') Palworld was great

  • Suggested Zenless Zone Zero

Personally thought it was a nice game. I haven't played any of the other games on the list except Civ 6 but not the 2024 DLC

  • Not sure if it's been an average year for gaming or if I'm just out of touch.

Feels like it's been a while since there's been massive hype for games like Starfield, No Man's Sky, GTA V etc.

  • +2
Suggested The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

I'm about 70% through the game and have had quite a blast. Though I haven't been playing games much this year.

  • I just realised I haven't played any new release games this year.

  • Balatro created an entire new genre pretty much. I think it'll hit a few game of the years around, just a ridiculously good and addictive game.

Otherwise has been quite a few flops from games that were expected to be better.

  • -3

I haven't played any of these. But I'm currently playing Skyrim and Horizon Zero Dawn (PS5 versions). Skyrim is more fun, although the action/combat is much more primitive and less refined. I keep trying to get into Ghost of Tsushima, but just find it so boring.

  • +2

    Factorio: Space Age

  • +2
Suggested World of Warcraft: The War Within

WoW: TWW has been my game of the year as it's all I've pretty much had time to play!

  • +2
    Suggested Factorio: Space Age

I was surprised not to see this in the list already, but scrolling down I can see @Kayrhcp mentioned it but didn't fill in the suggestion box (are you sure you're a factorio player mate?). Absolutely best game to drop this year! Even tho it is an 'expansion' it adds more content than the base game itself did.

    The factory must grow!

    • +1

I have no idea how stuff works here. Just like my factory.

  • -3
Suggested Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred

Diablo IV - Vessel of Hate. The best multiplayer RPG out there right now. The expansion adds to what was already the best game on the market.

  • Lions GF win against swans

  • Suggested Silent Hill 2 (2024)

Silent Hill 2 Remake - Amazing environment, atmosphere and sound design.

  • +1

MW3 is incred8ble. Sorry not sorry.

  • Suggested Frostpunk 2

If you're a city builder fan, this is as good as it gets right now. Frostpunk was one of the best games of 2018 (a pretty decent year) and they had their work cut out for them to give us a fresh take, but they managed it with FP2. Rock solid survival/city builder with 11bit Studio's signature morality challenges woven through. A great game from a Great studio.

  • Looks like Black Myth Wukong has won the Golden Joystick Ultimate Game of the Year 2024 award. It's purely community voted though, so might not be relevant to the TGA game of the year.

  • Suggested Satisfactory

Satisfactory won best PC Game of the Year; and very well deserved at that. Coming to consoles some time next year too!

  • It's a game that never ends. Go round and round. Weekly challenges to hook you even more. Stop for toilet break, get back into the action.

    • Released in 2022…

      • That's all you need in 2024 still

  • +3

Astro Bot wins GOTY at The Game Awards. Ozb called it.

  • -3

    Wukong has been robbed
