Bootloop on Microsoft Surface Pro 5 - Any Tips?

Previously purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 5 from this deal: [Refurb] Microsoft Surface Pro 5 i5-7300u 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Windows 10 Pro $199 Delivered @ Australian Computer Traders

I don't use it very often (~2 times per week to do the occasional YouTubing / Browse OzBargain).

The battery went flat last month so I charged it up. However, upon loading it up - it just boot loops.
Usage was nothing out of the ordinary.

Reached out to ACT for support - understandably it has been more than 12 months since. So I am SOL from a warranty perspective.

Attempted to troubleshoot based on the recovery instructions on the Microsoft website - which was unsuccessful.

Any tips / advice on how I can proceed?

Thanks you

LMGTFY….. have you tried a hard reset?

Hold the power button to reset a Surface laptop hard until the screen turns black. Then, simultaneously press the Power and Volume up buttons for 15 seconds. Finally, wait another 10 seconds before pressing the power button to turn your Surface on.

  • I've just been through this hell with a SP6. (Noting that I was trying to blow everything away so be aware that you may want to keep files and do things slightly differently to me)

    One thing that might work for you (without wiping the drive) is the recovery files here;
    https://support.microsoft.com/surfacerecoveryimage
    but that failed for me.

I also tried the Surface Data Erase USB (took me 3 different computers and 3 different USB drives to successfully create the bootable USB, and even then I was still left with a blank system

In the end I think the most successful thing for me was to upgrade to Windows 11 from a USB flash drive modified to bypass the Win11 install restrictions.
In that process I deleted ALL of the SP6 HDD partitions (Disk 0) and then created 1 new partition and told the Installer to Install Win11 there. The installer automatically re-created the other partitions.

You may be able to upgrade in place over the Win10 install to keep your files Possibly maybe?

    • Set up a windows USB.
    • Hold power button until the screen shuts off.
    • While holding volume up hit the power button and keep holding volume up until you get to the BIOS.
    • Go to the boot config tab and swipe left on the USB device to boot to it then run the startup repair.
    • swipe left on the USB device to boot to it then run the startup repair.

Where were you 2 days ago?
      I never read this anywhere!

  • Try booting to Linux Mint (make a USB) if you want to get to all your files to recover them.

Then as above upgrade it to win 11, never had issues with my SP3 once I went to 11.

    • That'll only work if Bitlocker was disabled.
