Thanks OP, perfect timing as I was looking for an outdoor smart plug.

These are really good, been using this to control garden lights and an underhouse ventilation fan

    • Do you have a link to the underhouse ventilation fan? Interested in getting one. Also one for the roofspace would be good too.

      • What's the purpose of doing one for the roof? I was told air comes in through the roof tiles anyway

    • when there's a blackout and then the power comes back, what's the default status of the power switch does it automatically turn on, stay off or use the previous setting?

      • Seems to be keeping the previous state - but not 100% sure, as mine is normally off (pool and deck lights).

        • thank you. pool pump is exactly what I was going to use it for.

          • +2

@M00Cow: From memory the manual suggests not using it for a pool pump - the power draw is quite high and may be an issue.

            • @weenis: ah cheers for the heads up, I'll look when it arrives
              .. I'm sure I can find other uses :-)

Big fan of the garage controller and the indoor smart plugs, neither have missed a beat since purchasing. Don't have anything that immediately springs to mind as a use case but I'm sure I'll find something!

    • I lost 5 out of 6 smart plugs….

      • Storm?

        • +1

If they blew due to a storm?
I don't think so, I have surge protection on the incomer,
They just became unresponsive quietly.. Appartly there was a batch or hardware revision which had a kown fault. Meross replaced most of them, 4 from memory

    • I had four smart plugs, all stopped working within 2 years

  • Me also, I've had a 50% failure rate within 12 months from multiple purchases, including a 4 pack. Will not buy Meross again.

  • Can you control these with Philips Hue?

  • How long is the cord/cable?

I couldn’t find info on Amazon

    • +2

Is not very long maybe a meter? I can confirm later, once I get home.

      • Thank you

1m mine got delivered today, it’s not blue but black

          • @GregFiona: Thank you for your help

Was hoping it was more than a meter.

            • +2

@Timetraveler: No. I have 3 now, driving the pool lights and the the mesh WiFi in the roof cavity. Can reboot without climbing in :)

            • +2

@Timetraveler: I wish it was a bit longer too, but not a big issue. I ordered another one yesterday, I’m surprised how good the wifi range is, my wemo wifi plug doesn’t work outside the house, this one is 20m away, 4 brick walls from the router and inside a metallic electrical pool box 👍

  • Not sure I see the benefit of this product.
Essentially you're trying to get automated power to something outside. You've still got to run an electrical cord out to the plug though. So why not just use a normal smart plug inside your house or garage and run an extension lead out to where you need the power? That way the plug had a stronger wifi signal and no risk of exposure to weather.

Tell me your use cases for this.

    • +1

There could be cases where you run multiple outdoor fittings off the one indoor outlet, yet want to control the outdoor fitting separately.
Having the control on the outlet would mean you lose that ability.

      • Ok. So if you need to power two or more outdoor devices and control them independently of each other then it could be useful.

      1. Pool waterfall pump
      2. Pool lights(Wifi box+remote costs $300)
      3. Pool chlorinator timer(surprisingly, the analog replacement timers for the chlorinator cost over $60-70).
      4. Outdoor Xmas lights

That’s my current setup with these :)

  • How long is the power cable?
Assuming it's only 1.5m is so, which means you'll also need a waterproof housing for connection to an extension lead for outdoor use.

3 ft, some 900mm. I have one plugged into an outdoor type of power point (where the pool pump is plugged in as well).
Another one in the roof cavity, this allows me to power cycle my mesh access point and PoE switch (for cameras) without climbing up there.
      These are my use cases.

      • Is the pool one exposed to weather? If so, how does it fair?
For the one in the roof cavity, why not just use two indoor wifi plugs on a double adapter?

        • +1

This is not just a double adapter, each outlet can be named and controlled separately.
The outdoor one looks the same as it was a year ago, when purchased, I have nothing to complain about it.
The cord is also thick and feels solid, although short (fairly common these 3 FT only cords).
The onboard (push) switch is enclosed in a rubberised bubble.
There is a hanging loop (I actually use) on the grommet for the case.
There are rubber seals on the socket covers.
ALWAYS USE THIS ON AN RCD PROTECTED CIRCUIT when used outdoors.
          I hope this helps.

          • @cristtos: Thanks. Yeah I realise it's not a double adapter. I said two wifi plugs connected to a double adapter could perform the same function indoors. ie: each can be named and controlled separately.

So the only real benefit of this product is it's weatherproofness, which doesn't seem all that great judging by the reviews on Amazon.

            • "Worked well until water went in after about 3 months of usage :-…"
            • "…Found the unit was full of water. Not suitable for outdoor use at all."
            • "suitable for the garden". Absolutely not if it rains. Our power kept tripping the safety breaker, narrowed it down to this box…."
            • "Junk, do not waste your money. it is NOT waterproof at all!…"
            • +1

@stuckster: anyhow - works for me and I shared my experience.
              but comments noted…
