Qantas Credit Card Minimum Spend Include Annual Fee

Hi OzBargain I need some advice.

I’m currently churning two credit cards (NAB and Westpac) to earn Qantas points. After meeting the minimum spend requirement of $3,000 within 2 months on my NAB card, I stopped using it and patiently waited for the bonus Qantas points to arrive. However, even after the third statement, I still haven’t received my NAB bonus Qantas points.

I double-checked to ensure I had spent over $3,000 to meet the criteria. Unfortunately, I just realized that my total spending of ~$3,200 in the first 60 days included the card’s annual fee of $320. If the annual fee doesn’t count toward the spending requirement, my eligible spend falls short, and I’m now past the 60-day period.

I plan to call NAB tomorrow, but I’d like to know if it’s possible to request the bonus points under these circumstances. If not, I’ll ask for a pro-rated refund of the annual fee, as I’d prefer not to keep the card without receiving the bonus points. Of course, my preference is to secure the bonus points if I can. Any info is appreciated

    Thanks for letting us know.

As clearly stated in the terms of the offer, the annual fee is not “eligible spend” therefore this is your fault not NAB’s. Next time read the terms clearly.

Doubt anyone you speak to will be authorised to give you the points when you haven’t met the terms and conditions

Unfortunately you won't win. I wouldn't waste my time with calling.

It's worth a try to call, despite it being your error.

Give them a call. Worst case scenario they turn you down, and it’s a pretty honest mistake. It’s the sort of thing they might be able to have leeway for.

    you dun goofed up.

  • annual fees are never included, it says very very clearly in the T&Cs for bonus points

neither does government spend, ATO spend, gambling, cash advances

another one people need to be careful of these days, some card providers have pushed out there reset time for bonus to 18months…..from what I have seen AMEX and NAB are two of those players.

Westpac (including BoM, St George, BankSA) pushed out to 24 months. :-(

      • Yuck, Im not at my 12months yet with them but that's a bugger

  • In hindsight, when you didnt see the point coming after (you think) meeting the requirement you should check whether you did.
Generally If a transaction does not give you regular point, they will not be counted towards the welcome offer requirement
And NAB is very clear about it as they state the eligible spending in each statement

Also note that when you cancel the card, the bank will immediately stop crediting your regular points. So make sure you stop spending after the cutoff date, check the statement, make sure you get the points, then cancel the card.

  • I've had it happen once with ANZ where i failed to spend it. However they were really hesitant to give it to me.
Also government spend is a big one, it generally doesn't count (some bills etc.)

    I don't think it'll ever happen again.
