reasons not to buy

  • Wireguard VPN only exists for v2 hardware after a firmware update. So far, people have been getting v1 hardware which doesn't have wireguard support.
  • Internet Backup feature is missing from these. Secondary ethernet or USB 4G dongle as fallback is not supported.
    About the product: https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/deco/deco-be65/

Important bits:

  • 4 x 2.5GbE ports
  • Wireless / Wired backhaul
  • USB-A for those with NAS

3 pack also available for $824, usually $1099.

I purchased from JW and forgot about OW price beat. Further discount by price beat Officeworks; $797 as of this writing and online only from OW.

a.k.a BE63 in the US; great review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24W2jqFxJ4g

  • We're already onto wifi 7??? I am still catching up on wifi 6e!

    • +3

I just upgraded my home wifi to AX3000 from AC1200 last week. I guess I'll be upgrading to BE11000 in 2030.

      • BE11000? That's wifi86plus+MAX right??

        • No. This mesh router here (TP-Link Deco BE65) is BE11000, as written in the title.

  • Would these give better coverage than 2 x Wifi 6 nodes, or just faster? I know that the faster bands have shorter range but not sure if these ones have more transmit power

    • There is greater bandwidth & stability with Wifi 7. Honestly it depends more so on your use case than anything. Some users will easily notice improvements (home video streamers / internal network gaming streamers - moonlight/sunshine) and some won’t notice anything at all.

      • Oh yeah I stream Plex with Moonlight, but I use Ethernet for all that. I probably won't benefit from upgrading.

        • Definitely wouldn't bother if you're running everything ethernet. Plus, your NBN plan would be far less than gigabit unless you're paying $$$. So realistically there's no real upgrade here for most people. I'd say the market is skewed towards US where they have far quicker internet speeds.

    • Probably a fraction better in range, wifi 7 is more towards faster speed and reliability.

    • How does the Orbi 770 have a dedicated wireless backhaul if its also triband?

      • -1

My mistake, I am not a network expert and the source chatgpt provided had the specs for the Orbi 770 and 970 which does have a dedicated backhaul.

"The Netgear Orbi 770 series does not have a dedicated backhaul band. Instead, it uses a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 setup where all three bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) are available for both client and backhaul connections, dynamically sharing resources based on network demand."

        https://www.netgear.com/au/hub/wifi/mesh/orbi-770-series-wif…

Thanks you saved me paying more for a feature I wasn't going to have anyways.

  • Hodl for BF sales.

    • This probably IS the BF sales.

      • True, a lot of events like this or eofy or boxing day the deals seem better before the actual date

I've been using this for over a year. The speed and coverage over a WiFi 6 is worth. Paid $900 12 months ago so these prices are cheap.

If any anything I want to upgrade to the BE22000 model.

  • Hi, just a quick question. If I only want Wifi 6 in tp link to extend my Starlink which system is the best or most appropriate? Please.

  • Great price and excellent device!

  • torn between settling with the solid flint 2 or stepping it up with these

  • I'm facing a dilemma: should I return the NetGear Orbi RBK852 Wi-Fi 6 Tri-Band, which I just received but haven’t opened yet, or stick with it? Both options are similarly priced, with the NetGear at $532. Is it wiser to return it and opt for this alternative instead? Any expert opinions to help me decide?

    • +1

I say yes to returning the orbi. they are usually too expensive for what they offer compared to peers. it's about 5 years old tech. I've also read that certain features get removed via firmware updates. this tp link uses newer hardware and standards.

    • Return and get this. Orbi will be old in 2-3 years. This will see you through another 5 years at least

    • +1

Return, call JB to price match, grab Ultimate giftcard for another 10% off, convert to JB Giftcard, buy these for $540, better product.

    • +1

Thank you all returned this and got the Deco BE65 tri-pack today via BingLee!

  • Does anyone who has these have any issues with devices jumping between them on the mesh when a device is in the middle of the two. I have the eero 6+ mesh system at the moment and I often get latency which I think is when a device can't decide which AP to connect to and flips back and forth. Once it's connected it's solid and fast, and I actually ended up going from 4 eeros down to 2 for a more stable connection, but I've since needed to add a 3rd back in for some IOT stuff in the garage and it's messed things up again.

    • +1

I don't have this device, but I have previous version with wifi 6E. There is a special network for IOT, and so should not mess up with your other devices.

I was looking at getting this and discovered some news articles around TP Link and their security vulnerabilities.

How far deep should anybody read into TPLink and the CCP or should I put my tin foil hat away?

By no means am I an IT expert and I find it confusing how to weigh it all up

  • Not sure how fast everyone else's' internet is but my 100m NBN doesn't need such high end router….

    • Buy this and then you have an excuse to upgrade to 1000Mbps or better NBN (and upgrade your PCs to WiFi7, 2.5Gbps LAN or better). You also want a latest Android flagship phone with WiFi 7 support (or latest iPhone).

      • Well that sounds against the Ozbargain spirit…

TP-Link are on my organisation's banned list because of disproportionate related to Chinese intelligence. If you do sensitive work from home, strongly recommend not purchasing this and replacing existing devices.

    • +1

People are more concerned about what Chinese intelligence will do to them than about what their own country, the United States, and other free nations have done (and still exploiting them). If you know what they're doing now, you'll quit using your phones, the internet and paying taxes.

Do the ethernet ports on the satellite nodes still work

    • Yes absolutely

  • +1

Been after these for a while, shame I missed out on the deal the other day for $458 on catch but this one aint bad.

Got JB to price match and got Ultimate GC and converted to JB. So ended up getting for $540, not quite $458 but not too bad.

    edit: +$5.99 delivery

  • Got Officeworks price matched for $569.05 (using Scorptec Link) and saved further with discounted gift cards.

  • Which hardware version is this? V1, V1.60 or V2?

    • Waiting for the delivery.

    • Whats the V1.6?

Only difference between V1 and V2 is slightly higher bandwidth in the 2.4GHz band right? Looks to be about ~110Mbps?

      • I got V1.0 from Officeworks

        • Should've gone to officeworks instead lol, bloody JB HIFI deliver estimate is 9th Dec for some reason.

      • I just found out that v2 hardware has a firmware update that adds Wireguard VPN support.

        • +1

I just got a v2 version from Amazon with the higher 2.4ghz speed…

          Says it's "Deco Be65(2 Pack)(US) Ver:2.0"

    • +2

      v1.0 from Wireless1
