  • what's the difference between this and the one you posted prior for $50 less? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851343

    • +1

Never mind. These are not white label. Answered my own question by reading comments

      • may I ask how to tell whether it's a white label? Both models seem to have a label in white colour?? Thanks.

        • +2

White label have WL in the SKU

          ST14000NM000J-FR is not White Label

          ST14000NM000J-WL-FR is white label

    • +2

The cheaper one was the White Label version, both are factory recertified, but white label usually have had a repair done prior to recertification.

We are a smaller volume reseller and have to rely on the warranty provided by our distributor.

    • I wouldn't buy anything from such a web site:

Many East Digital deals have been posted here with a heap of us jumping on it, no issues from three orders I've made (total 11 drives); they were also shipped from within Australia. Return address is also in Australia. They also operate via Ebay. I'm not a fan boy, just had positive experiences and all 11 drives have been operating all year 24/7 touch wood

        • +2

No, they operate in Hong Kong while I saw their shipping address was in HK and using HK post 2 months ago.
I even asked the Sales Manager in email with spoken Chinese if I could buy it in HK and they replied in simplified Chinese that I could pick up in HK.

        • Whats your oldest drive purchased from east digital. Eg. How long running? Can u use as backup drive?

          • @cobknob: I run them in my NAS (well in two NAS) which are on 24/7, 5 have have been in one since January this year, the other six since in my new NAS since July 2024.

          • +1

@cobknob: 3 years and no issues. Very happy with ED.

        • Did you run a smart check? Did all the numbers come up like new?

          • +2

@Sage222: Yes, I ran it on all of them and all good (I bought the "new" ones).

Either that or all SMART data wiped haha.

east digital has been a long time in ozbargain. I did buy 2×18TB for my home server. no problem so far.

HK company. All my dozen or so orders have shipped from AU though (Arrived within 48 hours, AU sender address)
        They're totally legit.
The used to have you email them personally and deal over direct messaging.
That got messy so they threw together a boilerplate shopify website.

They've been around for a while.
        https://www.ebay.com.au/str/eastdigital
        2014.

And you can hit the owner up on Skype if you have questions, like I did: robin2011qiu

I've made over a dozen orders from them, all delivered, and all were better than expected.
Plus their packaging could be used to ship nitro; its so well packed.

        • +1

The packaging is fantastic, all individual fit for purpose foam inserts for each drive. Very impressed.

          • +1

@shiprekt: I literally had to fight with myself to not hoard the packaging, lol. Its so good.

      • +1

I have 4x 16TB drives from them and all going amazing, no issues at all
They had a local address so it was shipping in about 3-4 business days. Cant remember if it was Syd or Melb

      • +2

east digital ships from melbourne if item in stock with local warranty return address. Website seems like a 2 min job but company is legit and have been operating in AUS for a number of years now.

    • +3

Im along time ED customer. No issues with all my hdds.

  • Great post OP. Any 20TB version coming soon? Thanks.

    • Depends on supplier availability and pricing, but also need to clear the current batch :)

      • Thanks for the update and great to learn the white label thing. Just wondering how can we tell if it’s a white label on the body of the drive? Really appreciate it,

    • +1

It's a rather small sample compared to some of the others, still 2/77 is definitely making me think twice

  • Seagate 4Tb portable: 10mths old that suddenly showed disk-failure immanent via 3 smart-readers: HD Sentinal, WD Data Lifeguard, Acronis Drive Monitor. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/816535

    Windows10 suggested check-disk when insert & error-checked via MS-Explorer took forever & often seems-hang. Was able to copy movies-stored but slow read-rate.

Desk bound 100%, really careful NOT to bump it while power-on, stored & play movies, never direct-download via torrent, had it power-on for 3d just-prior to issue noted-above. Any thoughts & thanks.

    Backblaze drive stats credible? https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-q3-…

    • Portable drives are recased internal drives that failed QA. Portable drives from almost all manufacturers aren't reliable.

      • -1

Desktop-HD: maybe you imply that WD vs Seagate is negligible…as per Backblaze drive stats ?

Experience or research: details pls ?

        • +1

It's a pretty commonly stated reasoning, but I'm far from 100% on it.

I'm assuming to dig into it you would have to check what metrics they use for QA for both internal and external - and what in my opinion I think you will find is that the standard for QA is lower for externals (since they are usually used as cold storage or occasional backup media.

This would of course mean that profit wise a company would be stupid to scrap a failed drive for QA if it failed one standard but met another

    • Using these WD desktop: health-status ok/pass/100%.
      WD Elements 1Tb 2005? bumper-edge (stolen 2022)
      WD Elements 2Tb 2008
      WD Elements 4Tb 2018
      Drives-on ~ 70% 24x7.

    • What's your question ?

All drives fail. It could be today, it could be in 10 years. Your failed hard drive is completely normal.

This is why you always need backups. Any of your drives could die at any moment.

  • Can you supply a tax invoice?

    • Yes, we can supply a tax invoice.

  • Not sure how it works with the 3 month warranty, one of my 2 Receritifed Exos 16TBs from pongobyte failed pretty quick - like 4 months. Took a little while to find/hit the problem. Partially works, but has bad sectors/read errors. Can't use it anymore. Other one still seems fine.

    • We are sorry to hear about your issues. Please contact us directly (you'll find our details online) and we'll be happy to assist.
So far, we've only been selling 14TB and 18TB factory recertified drives.
Feel free to reach out to confirm your order details.

  • Thanks OP, just picked one up that I’ll be adding to my unraid server to replace a 8TB drive that’s just started to report read errors.
