Other than your own words, how can a buyer confirm that these are factory certified not some kind of used drives that have been dumped by the corporate sector and bought by stores selling used computer items? My understanding is, if they are factory certified they will come with some sort of factory warranty.

Right, after enlarging the label, I can see the stamp. Still, that doesn't explain about the warranty, if Seagate is willing to re-certify the drives then why the warranties are not direct? Also is that mean each drive will have 0 hour of usage?

      • +2

doubt they have 0 hours, they are most likely server farm pulls (possibly recert by seagate), wiped and put in a new bag
probably around 3 years old with ~~~25,000 hours and very low power on count

We source the drives from a company authorised by Seagate and other manufacturers to distribute factory recertified drives. They are part of a global initiative that promotes the reuse of storage hardware and also contributes to reducing e-waste. We’ve been working with them for a while and have no reason to doubt these are not genuine factory recertified drives.
We do not speculate as to why the recertified drives are not covered by manufacturers warranty. There are quite a few other sellers of similar drives and we don’t believe any are offering manufacturers warranty.
We don’t have a history of the these drives prior to recertification, but we have been told they have to pass certain quality thresholds in order to be eligible for recertification.

So, this is your assurance to the customers ,, :)..

            • @chutibuti: We can suggest to try one of these drives, if not satisfied we are happy to provide a refund.
We have used these drives internally for our business and have had good feedback from many customers.
We said it before, they may not be suitable in all scenarios, and data backups are always recommended no matter how much warranty is offered.

      |used drives that have been dumped by the corporate sector and bought by stores selling used computer items?

I am 100% sure this is the case, unless OP provide a proof,, I have many of these ( not from the same seller ) , in my NVR for 4k,8k camera recordings, where I dont care about disk failures too much, but never to store any critical data for sure.

I have a question, sir, is Japanese AV classified as Critical data?

    • It says "Recertified Product."

Their warranty policy is also in breach of ACCC law.
Specifically, "You acknowledge and agree that you will be liable for any postage or shipping costs incurred in facilitating the Warranty Claim."

    Avoid!

    • Thank you for pointing that out, confirm we do not charge for valid warranty returns. We will have our terms clarified.

      • Seems there's four neggers who think you shouldn't. Ignore them and make it compliant 😉

  • These are super loud right?

  • And I just bought from east digital last night :/

    • +4

They could be better, just tell yourself that and let it go. 🙈

      • Yea but $30 is $30. And this is OzBargain lol

        • +3

Agreed. I feel that a lot. But I suppose with ED, you're getting better warranty, more reliable drive, easier claims, long term supplier, etc. So I guess it's better?

I went with the other guys, more expensive, Neology.

Think of all those people. 😀

East Digital have 3 year warranty

  • Ehat is WL stand for?

    • White Label, still factory recertified by Seagate but these drives have had an error or fault that required to be repaired first. The non-WL are usually unused or no-fault drives returned to the manufacturer. Both types of drives go through the same testing process as brand new drives.

  • Takes on new meaning of data mining. Looking for data on used drive.

    • If they are used in the server farm, they will be part of disk arrays. You won't be able to recover a single file.

i appreciate that this seller seems to be taking in feedback and improving on both pricing and warranty

  • I purchased 6x recertified Seagate 18TB HDDs about a year ago off Pongobyte - all working well with 24/7 use so far. Would absolutely buy again if I needed more storage. Anything important should be backed up anyways :)

  • Depresing how expensive things have become

Checked some old receipts from ~1.5-3 years ago, paid less for a new product

I though tech prices were meant to come down as they became older, not more expensive.

    • +1

you got a 14tb seagate hdd brand new for under $199 1.5-3yrs ago?

  • now warranty is 12 months! tempted

  • @pongobyte

whats the differences between those two ?

    ST14000NM000J-WL-FR - Seagate Exos X18
    ST14000NM000E-FR - Seagate Exos X22

  • +1

WL - White Label, still factory recertified by Seagate but these drives have had an error or fault that required to be repaired first. The non-WL are usually unused or no-fault drives returned to the manufacturer. Both types of drives go through the same testing process as brand new drives.
There's also the different model, the X22 has a slightly faster max transfer rate and is a more recent generation compared to the X18.

  • I ordered of these WL drives from Pongobyte. There was a problem with one, but they promptly replaced. Excellent service from Victor.
