    In the case of tomatoes, probably Mexico. Mexico these days gets near slave labour from other parts of South America and the Mexican farm workers get paid almost as much by the government as they do for their work, because it's nowhere near a living wage. It's trick down economics, Mexican farmers go to the US to get underpaid, other South Americans go to Mexico to get underpaid. Woo!

    Or they were picked by some poor African slave in southern Europe.

    But yeah, maybe someone in a "forced reeducation" plant in Western China picked these tomatoes too. But China doesn't export many tomatoes anymore.
