    Those 'surcharges' are annoying!
Looks like most computer stores have added a surcharge with every order…

What ever happened to no-surcharge options ? :-(
(excluding direct deposit - as this adds 2-3 business days to your order)

When I bought my new PC from centrecom I reluctantly paid some of it via zippay and some of it via afterpay so i could pay via credit card to get points. Then I logged into my accounts and just paid off the balances immediately.

Why is there a surcharge for Eftpos? Makes no sense. I've never heard of Eftpos having fees before.

      • +8

Blame the banks, they charge the merchant, the merchant passes the fees on to you. I too don't understand a surcharge if you are using a Debit card with the money coming straight out of your account.

        • +5

According to the ACCC, Eftpos fees average about 0.5% ? So that doesn't explain the 1.2% surcharge.

          • @Mr Bob Dobalina: Debit card fees might be 0.5% but credit card fees won't be that low. I suspect Centrecom are averaging the total card costs and applying to everyone. 1.2% is actually fairly reasonable. Card costs for my childcare provider are over 2%!

      • They were charged. But rarely. Some time earlier this year I noticed a massive wave come through VIC and within a month nearly EVERY merchant was putting the surchatge on the buyer.

        • +1

This is why the Banks want a cashless society… If it gets to that the fees will keep skyrocketing

          • @ThePunchingBag: That is the point legislation steps in. I get the feeling your thinking is a little on the extreme side.
In a society where you do not allow full liberal freedom it is the state doing the balancing job. Of course that job is far from perfect. But better than non-existent.

            • @goodwillN1: Maybe my thinking is a bit extreme but I know one thing & that is when Banks & Financial gain are involved they certainly make the most of it

i pay via bank transfer to centercom, it goes through osko and i usually get a payment received email a couple of hours later in the day. worse case it might take a day, if i purchase and transfer late in the arvo

  • Ordered this last night equal cheapest 4070 Ti ATM and has a little bit of bling over the Inno3D version

I don't want to be "that guy" who always says wait for the next best thing…

…But I'm waiting until the new year to see how the next set of mid-range cards look. AMD should be releasing RDNA 4 at CES and there's a good chance it will be another Polaris/480 moment of mid-range goodness (with no high end). And nVidia's next round of cards will be announced then also, with rumours the mid-range will be released uncharacteristically soon after the flagship cards to compete with AMD.

I honestly think by the end of Q1 next year the market for ~4060/4070 and ~3080/3090 performance cards will be MUCH more affordable. That being said, much gaming could be enjoyed before that time and my psychic powers have been wrong before.

i feel if your gaming at 1440p you wont get much extra from the new gen
most of the new AAA games run on DLSS and FSR anyway, the pure grunt doesnt get you far
4070ti s will get in that 100fps range with the above and new card might be 120?
      you wont notice that

It's always worth waiting. Nobody ever regretted waiting, but plenty have regretted not waiting.

      • have you been around COVID times and the card prices then :)

    • +2

      you should be "that guy".

prices have been here or lower for the past year. if they've never been attractive to a potential buyer until now, there's no reason for it to suddenly be attractive on the eve of next gen.

      • -2

except that USD can go up and AUD down - so there is that

    • You will be waiting until Q3 next year.

5080 and 5090 will be available by the end of Q1/ early Q2. Noone is going to dedicate manufacturing capacity to lower end/lower margin cards that early … unless they are overpriced and not low margin products.

there is also talk AMD threw in the towel and wont be focusing on flagship GPUs , so that leaves Nvidia with free market, no need to bump up specs on their cards for next gen at all, guess we will see but 4070ti S in essence is the best card of this gen in terms of price per frame and power usage i think

        • AMD has been disappointing for years. Hopefully Intel succeeds, they take the industry seriously.

I also expect a Chinese manufacturer to enter the space soon

          • @greatlamp: Intel dropped the ball - they even lost the CPU wars
no one is close to Nvidia , next gen no one will be able to put out anything thats even close to current 4090

            • @botchie: Their GPU investments are not comparable to their CPU business, they consider it so important that they pay the money to outsource manufacturing to TSMC even though they have their own FABs at home. I don't think they will have a competitor in the next generation but they take it far more seriously than AMD. AMD only cares about short term profits, it's run in the venture capitalist mindset.

It's also short sighted to assume Intel will remain behind competitors that outsource everything to Taiwan and need to pay continuously increasing costs to do so. They will eventually return to market leadership, it's not an industry the US government would ever let fail.

              • @greatlamp: Not sure what makes you think Intel will rise from ashes.
Their cpu 13 and 14th gens are a disaster ,same for their GPU
They are a far cry from the innovators they once were .
NVIDIA is not stopping and pumping out new tech and innovation each year, they got the best minds working there .
They won't get beaten anytime soon

                • @botchie: Intel's share price is in the toilet because of all the money they are investing. It's too early to say what the outcome will be. They have already poached top engineers from AMD.

What timeframe are you thinking of? I have already said I am not referring to next year.

                  • +1

@greatlamp: they will not catch up to Nvidia,
I dont think they will even get to AMD, AMD has given up GPU market but they are still far ahead in CPU and console gaming - maybe Intel can catch up if AMD makes a mistake or two but i don't see a change in the next 4 years
Nvidia and AMD leadership is like Apple - they are solid in my humble opinion.
the new 9800x3d chip is amazeballs, Intel doesnt have anything close, they might try and copy that but they are just playing catch up.

How are those things so expensive still… my 6800XT still easily runs everything on 1440p/144hz. I guess it's just for people who buy new PCs?
